[The comparison of selenium status between the children suffered from pneumonia and the normal children from kindergarten].

In order to investigate the relationship between selenium (Se) status and pneumonia children, the levels of Se and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in plasma and white blood cells and Se content in urine were determined in 57 cases with pneumonia and 85 control children under 10 years old. The results showed that the levels of Se and GSH-Px in plasma and white blood cell in the group of pneumonia were significantly lower, but the content of Se in urine was higher. Se content and GSH-Px activity in white blood cells of patients during crisis were significantly lower than those of patients during convalescence.

[Effects of excess fluoride on bone turnover under conditions of diet with different calcium contents].

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of excess fluoride on bone turnover under conditions of diet containing different amount of calcium. METHODS: The experiment was performed on rats raised on a balanced diet with adequate calcium or a monotonous diet with low calcium and given amount of fluoride in their drinking water (F, 100 mg/L) for 2 months or 1 year. RESULTS: Osteomalacia, osteoporosis and accelerated bone turnover were observed with elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteocalcin (BGP) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) in rats fed on low calcium diet and fluoridized water for 2 months. In the rats fed on adequate calcium diet and fluoridized water for 2 months, only slightly increased osteoblastic activity was found while the average width of trabecular bone was increased with elevated serum ALP activity in rats raised on the same diet and water for 1 year. CONCLUSIONS: The basic effect of excess fluoride on bone is the causation of a high bone turnover state which can also be induced to a milder extent by low calcium diet itself. Therefore, the formation of a high bone turnover state is the pathogenetic basis for low dietary calcium intake to exacerbate the severity of skeletal fluorosis.

[Effects of cytokines on somatostatin in nude mice bearing human renal cell carcinoma].

We studied the relationship between the production of SS and treatment with cytokines and a new method for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma. 4.4 x 10(6)RCC94616 cells were injected subcutaneously into the back of nude mice. Five groups with TNF, IL-2, rIFN, TNF + IL-2, TNF + rIFN and controls were randomly divided according to the mean diameter of experimental tumor. After the last injection of cytokines, 0.5-0.8 ml blood, 1g tumor tissue, para-tissue and normal tissue were havested respectively. Contents of SS were tested by radioimmunoassay. In the treatment groups with cytokines, the concentration of SS was changed, siginificantly increased in the TNF + IL-2 group (P < 0.01). The effect on distribution of SS by cytokines may also be mediated by the regulation of human immunity and antitumor activity. It may be suggested that the method of TNF + IL-2 + SS is best to treat renal cell carcinoma.

[Influence of preoperative on gastric cancer tissues and cells].

We studied how gastric cancer tissues and cells changed as a result of preoperative chemotherapy. 82 patients with gastric cancer in TNM I-IV stage underwent preoperative selective vascular chemotherapy with routine quantity of FAM. Histological analysis of their postoperative specimens revealed the following results. (1) Cancer tissues necrosed in 56.1% patients. These necroses, due to the chemotherapy, were located around vascular vessels. (2) Cancer cells were found to change with karyopyknosis, karyorrhexis, coagulation and necrosis of cytoplasm. There were invasion of lymphocytes, inflammation edema, and fibroelastosis around cancer cells as well. Changes were also observed in vessels with proliferous intima and thrombus. Most of these changes were grade 2. This paper summarises that preoperative vascular chemotherapy can bring about evident histological and cell changes in different types of gastric cancer. This kind of chemotherapy is recommended as one of integrative treatments to gastric cancer.

[Investigation of relationship between primary gastric malignant lymphoma and Helicobacter pylori infection].

UNLABELLED: In order to investigate the relationship between primary gastric malignant lymphoma (PGML) and helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection, the gastric mucosa of 39 cases of PGML and 22 cases of lymphocytic gastritis, 32 cases of Hp unrelated diseases was collected in this case-control study. Hp infection was confirmed by modified Giemsa stain; PGML was classified by Isaacson's classification. RESULT: The Hp detecting rate of PGML was 87.18%, which was significantly higher than that of control groups that was 63.64%, 53.13% respectively (P < 0.005). Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type was accounted for 92.31% of PGML cases with Hp detecting rate 86.11%. In surrounding chronic active gastritis and lymphoid-follicles Hp were detected in 84.62%, 56.41% cases respectively. IN CONCLUSION: histology shows a good relationship between B cell gastric MALT lymphoma and Hp infection.

[Study on the effect of different disease courses on pre- and post-operative visual acuity in cases with congenital cataract].

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of different disease courses on the visual acuity of congenital cataracts. METHOD: 876 cases with five kinds of human congenital cataract have been studied. RESULTS: It has been found that the preoperative visual acuity (VA) is closely related to the length of disease course. The longer the course of disease, the worse the VA. When the disease courses were shorter than one year, the most serious reduction of preoperative VA was found in the patients with congenital total cataract. When the disease courses were within one to four years, the most remarkable reduction of VA was found in patients with congenital dense nuclear cataract (CDNC). When the disease courses were longer than four years, except the congenital anterior polar cataract, the VA in all the other four kinds of cataracts were decreased significantly. It is indicated that the postoperative VA highly depends on the preoperative VA. In the group with disease courses shorter than one year, this relationship is the most remarkable. Some kinds of congenital cataract showed accelerated changes in preoperative VA, especially in the CDNC. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that the key point to get better visual function in cases with congenital cataract should be to discover and treat the patients as early as possible.

Clinical observation on 41 cases of threatened and habitual abortion treated by blood activation and stasis removal.

41 cases of pregnancy diagnosed as belonging to 4 subtypes of blood stasis, namely, qi stagnant, qi deficient, pernicious cold condensing and heat accumulating, suffering from womb leak, stirred fetus and fetal slip (threatened and habitual abortion) were treated by the method of blood activation and stasis removal in accordance with diagnostic typing. The treatment proved effective in 34 cases, the effective rate reaching 82.9%, with no significant differences either between threatened and habitual abortions or among the groups of cases with different syndromes. The treatment resulted in varying degrees of improvement in blood rheology and the level of serum (human) chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). Follow-up examination of 28 patients who had reacted favorably to the treatment and whose pregnancy had ended in normal deliveries revealed that none of the newborns differed significantly from the normal.

[Assessment of nutrition in dialysis patients and chronic uremic patients].

Multiple methods were used to assess the nutritional status of 40 uremic non-dialysis or dialysis patients in order to improve their living quality as well as to provide scientific basis for nutritional treatment. The investigation of diet diaries revealed that the ratio of animal protein over total protein in food was greater in uremic dialysis patients treated with either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis than in the uremic non-dialysis patients (P < 0.01, P < 0.05); the daily intake of total protein in each of three groups was lower than the recommended amount. The anthropometric measurement showed: decreased muscle protein store occurred in 35% of the dialysis patients and 80% of the uremic non-dialysis patients. Serum albumin measurement revealed that hemodialysis patients had much higher level than that of peritoneal dialysis patients (P < 0.01). 50% of the hemodialysis patients, 80% of the peritoneal dialysis patients and 60% of the uremic non-dialysis patients had lower level of serum albumin than normal. Evaluation of nutritional status of hemodialysis patients and peritoneal dialysis patients by means of urea production found that 65% of the hemodialysis patients and 37.5% of the peritoneal dialysis patients were in a status of negative nitrogen balance. According to the results of all the measurements, 58% of the dialysis patients had malnutrition of various degrees.

[Clinical evaluation and immunomodulatory study of cefodizime].

To investigate the efficacy, safety and immunomodulating activities of cefodizime in immunocompromised patients with infections, we carried out a randomized controlled prospective study of cefodizime vs ceftizoxime in 107 patients. The total effective cure rate and bacterial eradication rate were 87.3%, 61.8% and 89.3% in cefodizime group and 82.7%, 59.6% and 90.6% in ceftizoxime group. Drug tolerance was similar in the two groups, and side effect was mild and transient, mainly gastrointestinal reactions. Cefodizime had effect on both phagocyte and lymphocyte functions: enhancing the phagocytie rate, phagocytic index and bacterial killing activity, increasing the number of CD4+ lymphacyte and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+, stimulating NK cell activity and enhancing expression of IL-2R of active lymphocyte. Meanwhile ceftizoxime had no effect on any of the parameter mentioned above. The result showed that cefodizime is effective and safe in the treatment of LRTI, upper and complicated UTI in immunocompromised patients, as well as possessed immunomodulating activities.

[Effect of pathogen-stimulated human CD4+ T cells on gamma delta T cells].

OBJECTIVE: CD4+ helper T lymphocytes and gamma delta T cells play important role in antimicrobial immunity, however, the mechanism of interactions in question still remains to be elucidated. METHODS: CD4+ T cells and gamma delta T cells separated from peripheral blood lymphocytes of healthy donors by panning technique were stimulated with intracellular pathogen-Mycobacterium tuberculosis and human herpes virus-6 as well as extracellular pathogen-Trichomonas Vaginalis respectively in vitro. RESULTS: The stimuli induced CD4+ T cells significantly to proliferate and producing Th1-type cytokine profile-IL-2 and IFN-gamma. With a semipermeable co-culture system in vitro, antigen-activated CD4+ Th1-like cells were found to promote the proliferation and cytotoxicity of gamma delta T cells via soluble factors. CONCLUSION: Functions of gamma delta T cells might be inhanced by CD4+ cells with Th1-type cytokines in antimicrobial immunity.

[Application of preoperative angiography in diagnosis of gastric cancer].

To improve preoperative diagnosis of gastric cancer, we applied DSA in clinical diagnosis. 36 patients with gastric cancer were observed. Preoperative DSA and postoperative pathological analysis revealed the following results. With DSA, the accuracy of diagnosis of invasion depth of gastric cancer reached 72.2%. We summarised the criteria for diagnosis of gastric cancer. If subsidiary anastomotic channels narrow or obliterate in DSA, the case may be early cancer. If parietal branches narrow or obliterate in DSA, the cancer may invade the muscle of the stomach. If arcade of this lesser curvature narrows in DSA, the cancer may invade the serosa of the stomach. If the roots of main vascular vessels, such as the left gastric artery, and vascular vessels of other organs narrow or obliterate in DSA, the cancer may directly invade other organs as well. Two-thirds of gastric cancer could be identified through DSA with their shapes and characteristics. The varied shapes of vascular vessels caused by invasion of gastric cancer could reveal growing mode of the cancer.

[Acupoints specificity in promoting the plasticity of cat spinal lamina II with acupuncture-quantitative EM study].

Our previous studies have shown acupoints stimulation might promote the plasticity of spinal cord. In order to explore the acupoints specificity of the effects we used ten cats with unilateral dorsal partial rhizotomy (L1-S2, except L6). The rhizotomy sides of five cats received acupuncture stimulation (acupoints stimulation group) at Zusanli (St36), Xuanzhong (GB 39), Futu (St32) and Sanyinjiao (Sp 6) in the innervated areas of L6 spinal nerve for two courses, 10 days per coure. The rest cats were subjected to needling at the areas adjacent to the acupoints (nonacupoints stimulation group). Quantitative EM method was applied to detect (the population of synaptic terminals in lamina II 30 days postoperation. According to the number of synaptic contacts between synaptic terminal and postsynaptic element, synaptic terminals were divided into two types: the simple terminal (ST) coming from spinal and descending tract, and the complex terminal (CT) from dorsal root. The average numbers of the two types' synaptic terminals per photo were compared directly because the acupoints and nonacupoints groups' transverse areas of lamina II showed no significant difference. The results showed: (1) There was no significant difference for ST number between two groups. Associated with our previous study that acupoints stimulation did not influence ST number, the present result indicated that nonacupoints stimulation had no effect on ST number, (2) The complex terminal numbers were statistically different (P < 0.05). The percentage of CT in the nonacupoints group was only 53% of that in the acupoints group. This result was similar to two other nonacupuncture groups in our laboratory (the percentages were 59% and 62% respectively). It indicates that the effect of nonacupoints stimulation is similar to that of nonneeding, i.e. nonacupoints stimulation does not promote the plasticity of spinal lamina II or there might be acupoints specificity in promoting the plasticity of spinal laminal II.

[Epstein-Barr virus infection in midline malignant reticulosis].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in a group of patients with midline malignant reticulosis (MMR). METHOD: DNA-RNA in situ hybridization was used to detect EBER and immunohistochemical staining was used to examine the expression of latent membrane protein (LMP) and immunophenotype of atypical lymphoid cells (ALCs) in 37 cases of MMR; polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect EBV-DNA in 15 cases. RESULTS: (1) ALCs were positive for EBER 1/2 in 31/37(83.8%) cases; EBV-DNA was detected in 12/15(77.8%) cases; LMP was expressed in some ALCs in 5/19(26.3%) cases. (2) ALCs in 20/37(54.1%) gave both positive reactions to CD3 and CD56 antigens. CONCLUSION: A higher percentage of EBV infection was detected in this group of MMR, its ALCs expressed not only T-cell markers, but also NK-associated antigen, CD56. The presence of EBV infection in different kinds of lymphoproliferative disorders is reviewed and discussed.

[Histopathological studies of laryngeal allotransplantation in rats].

The establishment of an animal model for laryngeal allotransplantation in rat has enabled us to correlate clinical impressions of laryngeal allograft rejection with histologic data. In this study we used both clinical and histopathologic criteria to define the sequence and time parameters of rejection in histoincompatible vascularized rat laryngeal allografts. Of the 31 rats receiving vascularized laryngeal allografts, 18 served as experimental group, in which allogeneic transplantations were performed from inbred SD to outbred Wistar rats, 13 rats used as controls receiving laryngeal histocompatible transplants. The clinical phenomena of rejection aas started at 3 days post-operation, characterized by noticeable dermal swelling and lymphadenectasis of the recipient's neck. At this time, the graft appeared slightly edematous. These changes progressed and were more pronounced by 1 week. Two weeks after operation, the recipients exhibited an inflammatory scar tissue encasing the graft, the normal laryngeal architecture of grafts was invisible. Gross clinical evidence of rejection was well correlated with pathologic findings. Three days following transplantation, there was a slight histologic difference between the experimental group and the control group. Five days later, the surface respiratory epithelium exhibited progressive squamoi metaplasia, and minor salivary glands were mostly atrophic, afterwards extensive loss of acini emerged, with predominant lymphocyte and polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration throughout the lamina propria, sub-mucosa and the laryngeal adventitia. The arteriolar walls showed fibrinoid changes, with reactive intimal proliferation, and thickening of vessel wall. Focal thrombosis were frequently found. By 2 weeks, the normal architecture of the laryngeal allografts had nearly completely been replaced by fibrovascular connective and granulation tissues. Definition of the time sequence and histopathology of rejection will allow future determination of the efficacy of various immunosuppressive agents.

[Serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients and its relationship to prognosis].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha) with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and to evaluate clinical implication of serum TNF alpha. METHODS: Serum TNF alpha levals were measured by double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 76 NHL patients. Survival analysis was performed. RESULTS: Serum TNF alpha was increased in 55% newly diagnosed patients, and dropped to normal level on remission but increased again on relapse. Elevated TNF alpha levels of patients at diagnosis were significantly associated with Ann Arbor stage, bulky tumor and B symptoms, but weren't correlated to serum lactic-dehydrogenase (LDH) nor to beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2-MG). The survival period of patients with elevated TNF alpha levels was shorter than that of patients with normal TNF alpha levels. CONCLUSION: Elevated serum TNF alpha level is associated with high tumor burden and can be used as a prognostic marker.
