The authors report 90 cases of space occupying lesions originating in the occipital lobe, including 58 primary (26 malignant gliomas, II "benign" gliomas, 19 meningiomas, I sarcoma nad I hémangioblastoma (and 32 secondary masses (i. e. 16 metastatic tumors, 15 abcesses and I hydatid cyst). The onset of clinical features was progressive (gradual increase of intracranial pressure : 59 p. 100) rather than acute (41 p. 100 mostly as a visual (II) or a non visual (10) epileptic seizure). The time elapsed between the first symptom and the surgical procedure in any case appeared to be much shorter than in masses with other hemispheric localisation. This is thought to be due to the precocity and the intensity of the increased intracranial pressure, in relation to the blocage of posterior venous drainage. Increased intracranial pressure : only 7,7 p. 100 of the patient were free of IIP. Fundal changes are of little value in excluding this finding since no less than 3 months of evolution are necessary for their appearence. Visual disturbances consisted of acute obscurations (7.7 p. 100), controlateral deviations of head and eyes (3.3 p. 100) and visual field defects = 10 p. 100 of the patients were comatose and unable to be examined, 16.6 p. 100 had normal visual field. All the others had visual field defects wich could be evaluated by campimetric examination in only 26.6 p. 100. These included 14 hemiopias (7 without macular sparing) and 10 quadranopsia, always with incongruence (4 superior and 6 inferior). When the mass was strictly occipital, the same disparity was observed. Finally these visual field defects appeared to be variable and could well recover after surgery. Visual hallucinations were mostly of elementary type (21 p. 100) and always controlateral in cases of strictly occipital lesions. Elaborate hallucinations were rare (2 patients with extensive lesions). 8.8 p. 100 suffered from visual illusions wich always were related to large and right-sided masses. Disturbances of higher functions : Alexia was seen in 33 p. 100 of the left-sided masses (24 p. 100 "agraphic", 9 p. 100 "pure word blindness") Space agnosias of different type was found in 10 p. 100 of the patients, sometimes with purely occipital tumors.
In a previous experiment we were able to induce in rabbits a state of specific tolerance against bovine serum albumin (BSA) by pretreatment with highly hot labelled BSA-125 I thus preventing immune complex glomerulonephritis. Despite successful suppression of antibody production, the question remained to be answered if this was due to an nonspecific effect of immunosuppression by radio-iodinated BSA or caused by the elimination of the corresponding lymphocyte clone according to the clonal deletion theory. Therefore, rabbits, rendered tolerant BSA antigen were treated with another antigen, bovine gamma globulin (BCG) and developed classical immune complex glomerulonephritis and vice versa. These results strongly suggest a specific elimination of the effector cell clones only, the exact mechanism of which still remains to be elucidated.
Preliminary results are reported of a prospective multicenter trial of a new caval filter (LEM*) implanted by the percutaneous jugular route in 100 patients, 55 men and 45 women, mean age 67 +/- 13 years, to produce partial interruption of inferior vena cava (IVC). Of the 100 attempts to insert the LEM* filter, 2 failures to catheterize the jugular vessel were reported, 98 filters being placed in the IVC with 82 implantation considered adequate. Of the remaining 16 cases, the filter was inclined (7 cases) or incompletely open (9 cases) with total lack of success in 3 cases. Overall efficacy was obtained therefore in 95 cases. Follow up included 94 patients seen after one week, 63 after 3 months and 10 after 6 months: 3 embolic recurrences were noted (3.2%) of cases. None of the 8 deaths reported was related to the thromboembolic disease. Standard frontal abdominal radiographic images showed migration of filter in 13 cases (13.7%) not exceeding the height of a vertebral body: 9 were caudal and 4 proximal, the LEM* filter remaining within the IVC. Phlebocavography in 90 cases showed the IVC to be permeable in 84 cases (93.3%). Incomplete opening or inclination of filter had no effect on the course. These findings demonstrate that the advantages of the LEM* filter include: a percutaneous introduction allowing rapid, certain insertion, and a form studied for limitation of inclination and avoidance of perforation of the IVC.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Nine different tattoo dyes were analysed by various tests. Mixtures of organic dyes and inorganic filler were found; the inorganic filler consisted mainly of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Heavy metals, e.g. mercury, cadmium, or chrome as the common components of the traditional tattoo dyes, are capable of evoking unwanted skin reactions, but were not detected. Tattoo dyes are not officially controlled, and thus it is not known which substances-in addition to those identified by us-are presently used to produce ornamental tattoos. However, our results suggest that classic dyes have been superceded by newer, mainly synthetic dyes.

Some authors succeded in binding the bradykinin in form of a haptene by an azo-bridge to the human gammaglobulin as a vehicle. In this way, the bradykinin has been supplemented to a complete antigen. The bradykinin as a strongly vasoactive substance causes--after a local intradermal injection--an intensive circumscribed increase of the permeability of the capillaries. If such animals receive an intravenous or intracardiac injection of a 1% Evans blue solution, there is a strong blue colouring in the place where the bradykinin has been applied. The guinea pigs and the rabbits which had been immunized by bradykinin-azo-protein showed a significant decrease in the local accumulation of the Evans blue-solution,, which must be attributed to the immunologic neutralization of the intradermally injected bradykinin by an anti-bradykinin-antibody. The intradermally injected bradykinin is neutralized by the bradykinin-antibody. The intravenous or intracardiac injection of bradykinin causes a strong bronchoconstriction in the guinea pig. In those animals which have been pretreated with bradykinin-azo-protein, either there was no asthmatic dyspnoea at all or a decrease of the bronchial reaction would be found. This result very probably is also caused by the production and the activity of anti-bradykinin antibodies.

The authors report 100 cases of hydatid cysts of the brain operated in the Neurosurgical Department (C.H.U. of Algier). They compars their data with those of the litterature. It appears once more that cerebral hydatidosis affects the children living in endemic countries and looks like a quite pure increased intracranial pressure. Supratentorial situation of the mass can be approached many times by the E.E.G. A right diagnosis is possible in almost all cases (6/7) by angiographic examination. Surgical technique is simple but one must keep a great attention in removing these "virulent" cysts. As a rule, the results are good, as far as the patients are not in a bad status before the operation. Unfortunately becalse of a late diagnosis, one patient among three is blind after the operation as he was before.
