High-dose methylprednisolone sodium succinate (pulse therapy) in the treatment of renal disease: plasma and urine concentrations.

Methylprednisolone hemisuccinate (MPS) and methylprednisolone (MP) concentrations in plasma and urine were monitored in renal transplant and glomerulonephritis patients who were given i.v. infusions of 0.5 g or 1 g of MPS. A marked individual variation of peak plasma levels of both MPS and MP was observed after the same dose and MPS disappeared from plasma more rapidly than MP. Their clearances from the circulation, however, did not appear to be significantly influenced by the peak plasma levels of the drug, creatinine clearance, administration of previous pulses of MPS or the urinary excretion of unconjugated MPS and MP. Even in patients with profoundly reduced renal function, no accumulation of the drug was apparent when repeated doses of MPS were administered at 48-h intervals.

Effect of rhythmic grouping on stream segregation.

Three experiments investigated the role of temporal grouping on auditory stream segregation. For sounds that formed frequency streams (e.g., 400 Hz, 500 Hz, 1600 Hz, and 2000 Hz), the effect of rhythm was minimal. Temporal grouping did not affect judgments of stream segregation and did not affect difficulty of sequence identification. In contrast, for sounds that tended to form one coherent sequence (e.g., 750 Hz, 1500 Hz, 3000 Hz, and 6000 Hz), temporal grouping affected judgments of stream segregation as well as difficulty of identification. The temporal grouping could space the three lower or three higher pitch tones equally in time and this induced isochronous stream segregation. Subjects could not interleave the resulting streams, and identification became far more difficult. The role of rhythmic grouping is therefore contextual, depending on the relationships between the elements as well as the order of the elements.

Age and sex differences on preferred listening rates for speech.

The preferred listening rate of speech was investigated in 30 men and 30 women aged 18--87 yrs. Ss were presented auditorially a reading of a standard prose passage and themselves adjusted a Varispeech I time compressor/expander to yield preferred listening rate. Differences in rate preference were significant for age but not for sex differences. Results support previous reports of auditory perceptual differences with increasing age and suggest that variability in previous reports of preferred listening rates may have been due in part to age differences of the Ss.

Analysis of migrants from nylon 6 packaging films into boiling water.

Ultra-violet spectrophotometry (UV), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) were used to identify and quantify oligomers extracted with boiling water from two different nylon 6 films used in boil-in-bag food packaging. The results indicated the loss of up to 1.5% of the original nylon film weight, into the boiling water, as caprolactam and cyclic oligomers up to the nonamer. Extraction time, thickness and type of film used, were found to be parameters which affected the levels of these migrants. These results will be relevant to situations in which food is cooked in the water used to heat the pouch contents.
