Chromium concentration by proximal renal tubule cells: an ultrastructural, microanalytical and cytochemical study.

After treating rats with potassium bichromate, x-ray microanalysis of the proximal renal tubule cells demonstrated the presence of chromium in intracellular vacuoles. The lysosomal nature of these vacuoles is shown by the visualization of acid phosphatase activity. Chromium is concentrated both in the autolytic vacuoles and in their residual forms. The metal is eliminated quite late, concomitant with cellular necrosis.

The second component of complement (C2) as an index of hereditary angioneurotic edema.

Measurements of C2 hemolytic activity were performed in the sera of 13 patients with Hereditary Angioneurotic Edema. Prior to treatment, C2 values correlated with the severity of the disease in each patient. During androgen therapy with Danazol, C2 measurements reflected the clinical benefit of the drug more accurately than C4 levels, thus explaining the effectiveness of low drug doses. This study also suggests that breakdown products of C2 may play an essential role in the pathogenesis of the edema.

[HLA and erythrocyte genetic markers in a family with hereditary angioneurotic edema (author's transl)].

The study deals with a family of 22 members spreading over four generations; 14 members suffer from hereditary angio-neurotic edema; all of them have been typed for 30 antigens of the A and B loci in the HLA System and for ABO and Rhesus erythrocyte markers. There is no connection between the disease and any of the markers considered. As for the HLA system, there should be at least 7 chromosomic recombinants to account for the relationship with one of the haplotypes involved.

Clinical pharmacology of flurbiprofen: a novel inhibitor of platelet aggregation.

Studies are reviewed of the inhibitory effect of flurbiprofen, given in doses ranging from 50 mg to 200 mg per day for 1 week, on platelet aggregation measured by biological tests (adenosine diphosphate and collagen methods). Flurbiprofen at doses of 50 mg and 100 mg daily had a peak time of action of between 1 and 2 hours, the effects usually disappearing after 24 hours, and 100 mg flurbiprofen caused a similar decrease in platelet aggregation to 1 g aspirin daily. In a clinical study of 72 patients with chronic glomerulonephritis treated with doses of flurbiprofen up to 200 daily there was a significant correlation between the parameters of aggregation measured and treatment, and between proteinuria and adenosine disphosphate aggregation when the flurbiprofen dose did not exceed 100 mg daily.

Crystalloid nature of mineral deposits in Bowman's capsule of the human glomerulus. Study by X-ray microanalysis and electron microdiffraction.

Abnormal crystalline mineral deposits are often observed in the basement membrane of Bowman's capsule in the human glomerulus. The nature of these deposits has been the subject of much discussion. By means of electron probe microanalysis and electron diffraction techniques, we have identified these abnormal deposits as whitlockite (beta-calcium-orthophosphate).

[Study of hemostasis factors in nephrotic syndrome. Pathogenic interpretation and therapeutic deductions].

Thrombo-embolic accidents are extremely common during nephrotic syndrome (8 p. 100). They share the garvity of thrombo-embolic accidents occurring under other circumstances (20 p. 100 mortality). They are accompanied by numerous disturbances in clotting factors the mechanisms of which are discussed. Nevertheless the study of these disturbances does not make it possible to predict the onset of a thrombo-embolic problem. By contrast, the degree of hypoalbuminaemia is significantly correlated with the thrombotic risk (p. 0.001) and serves as an indication for the necessity of preventive heparin therapy, in the form of calcium heparinate. In this way the authors have been successful in eliminating the thrombo-embolic risk in association with nephrotic syndrome.
