Gas chromatographic characterization of the relationship between some Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium paratuberculosis strains.

Mycobacterium avium strain P-55 and M. avium strain DENT differ from M. avium strain 16909-338 on the basis of their fatty acid spectra (C14:0, C18:0 and tuberculostearic [TBS] acids) studied by multivariate statistical analyses. Strains P-55 and DENT are closer to M. paratuberculosis strain 5889 than to M. avium strain 16909-338, a finding which is in harmony with earlier immunological observations. The recently isolated M. paratuberculosis strain 385 has proved different from M. paratuberculosis strain 5889.

Clinical findings in 61 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis.

In this report the case histories and working conditions of 61 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) were evaluated and compared with those of age- and sex-matched controls. An extreme female predominance was found and the sclerodermal involvement of the trunk was also commonly demonstrated. Prior occupational exposure to chemicals (mainly organic solvents) was found in 28% of the patients. Furthermore a high proportion of menstrual bleeding disturbances was found.

Changes in gene frequencies at the octanol dehydrogenase locus of Drosophila melanogaster imposed by environmental ethanol.

Experiments have been performed to study the effect of selection at the Odh locus in Drosophila melanogaster populations using different alcohol concentrations in the medium. The data can be best interpreted by assuming frequency-dependent selection. When genotype frequencies are considered as independent variables and values of Wrightian fitness as dependent variables, it turns out that different functions describe the selection of the coexisting genotypes. A linear equation is used for the SF genotype and a hyperbolic function for the FF genotype. No function of good fit could be found for the SS genotype. Simulation experiments using these functions fit our data well.

Studies on anti-granulocyte and anti-platelet antibodies in patients with systemic sclerosis. Chemotaxis, phagocytosis and opsonized effect of PSS sera on normal granulocytes.

Autoantibodies may play a part in the pathogenesis of progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS). Anti-granulocyte antibodies have already been demonstrated in the sera of patients with PSS. In our study, anti-granulocyte antibodies were investigated by ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) and cytotoxic tests. These antibodies were found in 18.4% of 38 patients. All the positive sera showed cold- and/or warm-reacting granulocytotoxic activity. No connection with granulocytopenia was found. The effect of patients' sera on normal granulocyte functions was also studied. Chemotaxis and binding of EA cells were inhibited independently of the presence of anti-granulocyte antibodies. Yeast phagocytosis and opsonized yeast phagocytosis were definitely reduced by sera containing anti-granulocyte antibodies. Anti-platelet autoantibodies were detected in 23.9% of the patients' sera, but no thrombocytopenia was found.

[On a double testis].

On clinical examination of a 44-year-old man because of hypospadiasis and recurrent inguinal hernia, an intrascrotal mass was palpated. The tumour turned out to be a supernumerary testicle. In doubtful tumorous conditions of the male genital tract Triorchidism, a rare congenital anomaly should be borne in mind.

[Kawasaki syndrome (author's transl)].

In a 2-year 4-month-old boy endarteritic changes and spindle-shaped aneurysmas of the coronary arteries were found as a complication of Kawasaki syndrome. The vascular alteration, probably immunopathologically based, must be differentiated as a primary endarteritic process from primary necrotising periateritis nodosa which also occurs in childhood. The fate of the affected children is determined by the complications of coronary artery changes which however occur only in 1--2% of affected persons.

[Synovial hemangioma of the knee-joint (author's transl)].

In monoarticular diseases of the knee-joint of children, especially in case of a blood-stained joint effusion, a synovial hemangioma has to be considered. The histological examination of an ample biopsy specimen can prove the diagnosis. A radical synovectomy carried out as early as possible results in healing of the lesion without recurrence.

[Thermographic and histologic studies of the antiinflammatory effect of benorilate by means of the cotton pellet test in the rat (author's transl)].

1. The effect of (4-acetamido-phenyl)-2-acetoxy-benzoate (benorilate, Benortan) on the inflammatory process was studied thermographically and histologically in cotton-pellet tests on rats. 2. Following implantation of the cotton-pellet, thermography shows a clear inhibition of the local inflammation due to treatment with benorilate. 3. Histological examination shows a corresponding influence of benorilate upon the proliferative phase of the inflammation. 4. The success of antiphlogistic therapy is in correlation with the time of medication.
