Twenty-eight cannulated crossbred gilts were assigned to one of four treatments: natural mating, artificial insemination (AI, whole semen), AI (seminal plasma) or control (nonmated). Blood samples were collected four times daily (0800, 1200, 1600 and 2000 hr) on the day before standing estrus, the day of the onset of standing estrus and the first day after the onset of standing estrus. Thereafter, blood samples were collected once daily (1200 hr) until 15 days postestrus. Analysis of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the plasma revealed similar concentrations for all groups on the day of estrus, but higher (P less than .05) values for naturally mated gilts the following morning. Mean concentrations of LH on the first day after the onset of standing estrus were higher (P less than .01) for the mated gilts (2.75 +/- .54 ng/ml) than for gilts in the AI whole semen (.89 +/- .10 ng/ml), AI seminal plasma (1.02 +/- .13 ng/ml) and control groups (.92 +/- .11 ng/ml). Concentration of LH in the plasma of pregnant gilts tended to be higher after day 9. These results suggest that coitus may prolong the LH surge.
A study was conducted to determine reproductive response of primiparous beef heifers to an ovulation induction regimen during restricted dietary energy intake. Thirty-seven Barzona x Hereford heifers, maintained under drylot conditions, were utilized. Heifers were restricted in TDN on a pen basis to approximately 50% of N.R.C. recommendations for the first 90 days postpartum, then received 120% for 80 days thereafter. All animals received control injections (C) or 30 mg progesterone on day 15 postpartum followed in 48 hours by 2 mg estradiol-17beta (PE). Treated heifers not ovulating at first treatment and/or not cycling, were re-treated at 60 day postpartum, with non-cycling C heifers receiving control injections. Intact fertile bulls were maintained with the heifers from day 1 to 170 days postpartum, with visual observations for signs of estrus and breeding activity conducted twice daily during this period. At first treatment, seven of 18 heifers ovulated, one conceived and four continued to cycle. At second treatment, three of 13 conceived and seven returned to a synchronized estrus 15 to 21 days later. Although intervals to first estrous behavior and estrus favored PE heifers (P< .05), by 90 and 170 days postpartum no advantage in interval to conception or number conceiving was observed.
A patient aspirated soup 36 h after delivery, developed Mendelson's syndrome but survived. She was small and fat and was immobilized in bed for longer than usual because of inadvertent dural puncture; these factors are thought to have predisposed to the accident.

A series of bis(beta-diketones) was synthesized and tested in vitro for antiviral actitity against herpes simplex type 2. Two parameters which were studied in an effort to optimize activity were the nature of the aryl group and the length of the alkyl bridge. One of the more active compounds, 4,4'-[(1,4-phenylenedioxy)bis(6,1-hexanediyl)]-bis[3,5-heptanedione] (6), was evaluated more extensively and found to inhibit the cytopathic effect in tissue culture of herpes simplex virus type 1 as well as type 2. Compound 6 was evaluated in vivo topically against herpes simplex type 1 in experimentally induced skin infections in guinea pigs. A topical treatment with 2% of 6 in a vanishing cream base, administered 24 h postinfection applied five times daily for 4 days, significantly reduced the number and size of herpetic vesicles.
The synthesis and in vitro antiviral evaluation of a series of substituted benzyl beta-diketones are described. The introduction of a styryl group onto the phenyl ring enhanced activity against herpesvirus type 2. The 4-methoxystyryl homologue 8 was evaluated extensively in vitro and was found to be effective against both RNA and DNA viruses. Compound 8 was evaluated in the mouse vagina against herpes simplex type 1 and produced a significant increase in survival rate as well as in survival time.
Accidental intra-arterial injection of intramuscular antibiotic preparations is described in 3 cases in infants. In 2 benzathine penicillin was injected, and in 1 rolitetracycline. The clinical features are dominated by arteriolar obstruction which produces gangrene of the most severely affected limb. In addition, neuroloigcal involvement occurs when vessels to nerves or spinal cord are involved. The arteriolateral aspect of the thigh is preferable to the buttock as a site for intramuscular injection, and a short (2.5 cm) needle should be used to minimise the risk of intra-arterial injection.

Gangrene of an extremity is very uncommon in measles, but we have encountered 3 cases. One patient had a peripheral variety with gangrene of the toes, while the other 2 had major vessel thrombosis. Evidence from the literature is advanced to support the hypothesis that disseminated intravascular coagulation on an immunological basis may be an important precipitating factor. Treatment is briefly discussed.
A series of aryloxy alkyl diketones II was synthesized and screened in vitro for antiviral activity. The effect of various substituents on the phenyl ring, as well as the length of the alkyl bridge, was examined to establish the requirements for optimum activity. One of the most active members of the series, 4-[6-(2-chloro-4-methoxy)phenoxy]hexyl-3,5-heptanedione (56), exhibited a high level of activity against both DNA and RNA viruses in both the tissue culture and organ culture screens and was particularly effective against herpesvirus type 1 and 2.

The root canal systems of the deciduous teeth have been demonstrated by the epoxy resin injection technique. A major difference is noted between the simplicity of that seen in the incisors and the molars.
Gonorrhoea was not found to be a problem in antenatal patients. It was found in only one out of 625 women, thus confirming other British surveys which do not agree with the North American figures. Candidiasis is commoner than trichomoniasis (27.4 and 4.7 per cent. prevalence respectively) and culture of a high vaginal swab is more effective as a means of diagnosis than a cervical cytology smear. The two conditions seldom occur together. The detection rate for Candida increases with gestation, but not with age, parity, or premarital and extramarital conception. The species isolated was predominantly Candida albicans. Trichomonads are detected in culture of a high vaginal swab more often than in a cervical cytology smear. Detection does not increase with age, parity, or gestation, but does increase with premarital and extramarital conception. It is difficult to diagnose clinically the cause of vaginal discharge in a pregnant woman.
