Various diseases can symptomatically resemble appendicitis. It has been proved that luminal obstruction is the most frequent cause of inflammation of the appendix. There are various causes of obstruction, such as scars, foreign bodies, tumors, granulomas, and dysfunction of coecocolon. Every appendix should therefore be histologically examined. The operative indication for appendectomy should not only include the time factor, but also anamnesis, complaints, and clinical presentation. It is inconsiderate to perform appendectomy as a prophylaxis against appendicitis. Finally, it is surprising that there have been almost no experimental studies on pathogenesis of appendicitis.
Polypeptides removed from the HeLa cell surface by mild pronase treatment rapidly inhibit protein synthesis when added to HeLa cells or cell-free translation systems derived from HeLa cells. The inhibitory activity is heat stable. Protein and carbohydrate components of these polypeptides are required for inhibition of protein synthesis in vivo and in vitro. Two peaks of activity can be recovered from polyacrylamide gels, corresponding to polypeptides with molecular weights of approximately 29 000 and 41 000. Inhibition of protein synthesis in cell-free translation systems appears to be primarily an effect on elongation of polypeptide chains, whereas in the intact cell the primary target may be polypeptide chain initiation.

The preoperative preparation of hyperthyroidism requires the selective use of various drugs. As in the past, Plummer's iodine therapy takes precedence. Thyrostatics or beta receptor blockers, on the other hand, are only used in selected cases. The aim of preoperative preparation is euthyroidism. It is most rapidly and safely attained with Endoiodin (prolonium iodide) or combination of Endoiodine plus beta receptor blokkers. Thyrostatics appear to be less suitable for preparation, because they have a slow onset of action. Moreover, thyrostatics lead to densifications and adhesions of the thyroid gland capsule to the surrounding tissue, so that the preparation becomes complicated. 254 patients with hyperthyroidism and decompensated toxic adenoma were surgically treated without complications as a result of preparation with Endoiodin.

Islet cell tumors have been described the past 25 years in frequent series. Multiple symptoms lead often to prolongation of disease and misinterpretation of diagnosis. Because of its rarity most authors report only few cases. We had the chance to observe 24 patients of which four had carcinoma within 12 years. Symptoms, clinic, different surgical procedures are described. Clinical difference seems to exists between benigne and malignant islet cell tumors.

The acute hemodynamic effects of 50 mg. of the alpha- and beta-receptor blocking agent AH 5158, administered intravenously, on the systemic and pulmonary circulation were studied in 13 hypertensive patients at rest in the supine and erect positions, and during exercise, with right heart and brachial artery catheterization. AH 5158 induced a significant fall of systemic blooc pressures under all conditions, whereas the pulmonary systolic and mean pressures were lower at rest and unaltered during exercise. The left ventricular filling pressure largely remained unchanged. Blood pressure was lowered predominantly by a reduction in systemic vascular resistance together with a reduction in cardiac output. These effects were particularly pronounced in the erect position and during exercise. Cardiac output was lowered solely by the reduction of heart rate; stroke volume was unchanged or even increased. The arterial-mixed venous oxygen difference increased in the erect position and during exercise. The pattern of AH 5158-induced hemodynamic adaptation comprising a reduction of both vascular resistance and cardiac output, without evidence of significant negative inotropic action, offers a novel basis for treating hypertension with a single drug. Its pharmacological and hemodynamic profile suggests considerable potential in the treatment of hypertensive patients.
In a 3-year clinical trial the effect of daily supervised toothbrushing with a dentifrice containing sodium fluoride/silicon dioxide and a dentifrice containing sodium monofluorophosphate/calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate was investigated. Initially about 400 children aged 9-11 years from one school in Malmö took part in the study. They were randomly divided into two groups. Each group brushed their teeth daily in school under the supervision of a dental hygienist. The children and their families were given the corresponding dentifrices for home use. The children were examined for caries at the start of the study and again after an interval of 1 year by the same dentist and according to the stated criteria. A comparison of the caries increments in the two dentifrice groups revealed a statistically significantly lower caries increment during the 2nd and 3rd experimental years in the sodium fluoride dentifrice group compared with the sodium monofluorophosphate dentifrice group.
Viral protein synthesis was studied in two Friend virus-induced erythroleukemia cell lines (Ostertag cell lines FSD1-F4 and B8) by the technique of immuno-precipitation with monospecific antisera to the major envelope glycoprotein gp70 and major core protein p30. One of the cell lines (F4) releases active Friend virus complex to the growth medium, where release of virus from the other cell line (B8) is barely or nondetectable. It was found that in the nonproducer cell line B8, a large-molecular-weight protein of about 65,000 containing p30 antigenic determinants is synthesized, yet no p30 is produced upon prolonged incubation and chase, suggesting that this might be the actual lesion that prevents mature virus production by these cells. In both cell lines, the predominant protein species that is immunoprecipitated with monospecific anti-gp70 serum is a protein of 55,000 to 60,000 daltons that is labeled with glucosamine to a much lesser extent that gp70 and appears to become heterogeneous with time. Large amounts of gp70 can be detected in the cell-free medium, but none of the unstable species of 55,00 to 60,000 molecular weight.
Plasma volumes and intravascular protein masses were measured in eight well-trained boys (VO2 max = 59.6 +/- 6.5 ml/kg body wt) aged 13-15 yr and compared with two groups of adult athletes aged 17-20 yr (VO2 max = 61.8 +/- 3.4 ml/kg body wt) and 24-30 yr (VO2 max = 63.3 +/- 4.1 ml/kg body wt), respectively. The trained boys had larger plasma volumes and increased intravascular masses of albumin and hepatogenic globulins as compared with values available for children with normal physical activity. There was no significant difference between the boys and the adults concerning maximal oxygen uptake, plasma volume, albumin, immunoglobins, and haptoglobin, when allowance was made for differences in body dimensions; probably due to the young age, however, the boys had considerably higher relative alpha2-macroglobulin and transferrin masses. Endurance training apparently elicits the same response of the plasma protein system regardless of age, at least after pubertal age has been attained. The overall effect of these changes implies an increase of the water binding capacity of the plasma
