Cytology of synovial sarcoma metastases in pleural fluid.

Report is made of the cytology of pleural fluid arising from extensive pleuropulmonary metastases of a biphasic synovial sarcoma of the leg of a 35-year-old male. Both fibrous, spindle-shaped and epithelioid types of tumor cells were present. The epithelioid cells were seen in groups or arranged in glandlike structures. Transformation of the fibrous, spindle-shaped tumor cells into the epithelioid ones was observed, suggesting that these two types of tumor cells are cytogenetically related.

Cytopathologic aspects of a metastatic malignant mixed Müllerian tumor of the uterus. Report of a case with transabdominal fine needle aspiration biopsy.

The cytologic details of a fine needle aspiration biopsy of an intraabdominal metastatic malignant mixed Müllerian tumor of the uterine corpus are presented. Cytologically, the malignant stromal and epithelial elements resembled those in previous histologic materials. Given the aggressive nature of this lesion, the patient may initially present with an inoperable tumor; cytologic examination of an aspiration biopsy may be diagnostic without the need for an exploratory laparotomy.

Cytopathologic aspects of leiomyoblastoma in fine needle aspiration biopsy. Report of two cases.

The cytopathologic features of the fine needle aspiration biopsy of two cases of malignant peripheral leiomyoblastoma are presented. Aspirated tumor cells occurred singly, not in clusters. They were pleomorphic, varying in size and shape and showing eosinophilic to amphophilic cytoplasm. Many tumor cells had a vacuolated cytoplasm. Multinucleated large tumor cells were seen in one case; their nuclei were hyperchromatic and round to oval, with chromatin clumping and prominent nucleoli. The cytologic findings suggested a malignant mesenchymal tumor. Histology demonstrated the diagnosis of leiomyoblastoma.

Aspiration biopsy cytology of renal angiomyolipoma.

The aspiration cytology of a renal angiomyolipoma is reported. Single mature fat cells, clusters of renal tubular epithelial cells and single as well as groups of smooth muscle cells were seen. The smooth muscle cells were pleomorphic, with vacuolated, granular or fibrillar cytoplasm. Their nuclei varied in size and shape and displayed variable chromatin patterns, ranging from finely to coarsely granular. Many nuclei contained prominent nucleoli.

Exfoliative cytology of microinvasive squamous-cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. A retrospective study of 42 cases.

The cervical scraping smears from 42 cases of microinvasive squamous-cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix with stromal invasion less than 3 mm were reviewed. Microinvasion could be suggested in approximately 60% of the cases by examination of the smears. The cytologic prediction of microinvasion was 14% in cases having stromal invasion less than 1 mm; it increased to 72.7% and 88.2% when stromal invasions were 1.1 to 2 mm and 2.1 to 3 mm in depth, respectively.

Exfoliative cytology of in situ and microinvasive adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix.

The histology and exfoliative cytology of 15 cases of adenocarcinoma in situ and 5 cases of microinvasive adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix were reviewed. The exfoliative cytology in both groups showed no remarkable differences and consisted of large epithelial fragments, cellular strips, groups and isolated examples of malignant columnar cells situated in a necrotic-material-free background.

Cytomorphologic aspects of hepatic angiosarcoma. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of a case.

A case of hepatic angiosarcoma diagnosed by fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is documented. The presence of malignant endothelial cells was diagnostic of angiosarcoma. Since hepatic angiosarcoma is an extensive lesion, the chance of getting a good cell sample for cytologic diagnosis by aspiration biopsy is very high. FNAB of the liver is a safe procedure and has proven to have a high diagnostic accuracy in hepatic cancer.

Cytopathology of pulmonary carcinoid tumors in sputum and bronchial brushings.

OBJECTIVE: To study the cytologic manifestations of bronchial carcinoid tumor (BCT) in sputum and bronchial brushing (BB). STUDY DESIGN: A diagnosis of BCT was made by sputum examination in 1 case and by BB cytology in 12 cases with central and typical BCTs. The tumor was suspected in three patients whose sputa were too scanty in diagnostic cells. Three patients with central and typical BCTs yielded only a few tumor cells in BB samples and were suspected of having BCT. In three patients with central and atypical BCT, a diagnosis of oat cell carcinoma was made in two cases and typical BCT in the third case by BB. One case of peripheral and typical BCT was correctly identified by BB. In BB samples the typical BCTs showed tumor cells singly and in loose clusters. They displayed oval nuclei, fine chromatin clumping, micronucleoli and ill-defined, variable cytoplasm. The number of tumor cells with plasmacytoid configuration varied from case to case and was abundant in one patient. The peripheral BCT was predominantly composed of spindle cells and in BB samples showed single and loosely clustered cells with ill-defined cytoplasm and cigar-shaped nuclei. Two atypical BCTs yielded pleomorphic cells displaying scant cytoplasm, nuclear molding, fine chromatin and rare micronucleoli, similar to those of oat cell carcinoma, but the smear background was free of necrotic debris. CONCLUSION: BCTs rarely exfoliate their cells in sputum, and bronchial brushing is efficient in detecting BCT cells that show distinctive cytologic features of the tumors.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma. Report of a case diagnosed by needle aspiration cytology and electron microscopy.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare tumor, accounting for less than 1% of all primary soft tissue malignant neoplasms. The tumor is a distinct clinicopathologic entity, but its histogenesis is controversial. CASE: The needle aspirate from a soft tissue tumor in a 15-year-old girl was stained with Diff-Quik and periodic acid--Schiff (PAS) with and without prior digestion with diastase. Minute tumor tissue fragments were processed for transmission electron microscopic examination (EM). Clustered malignant cells with ill-defined, frothy or vacuolated cytoplasm showed a positive reaction with PAS and PAS with prior diastase digestion and oval nuclei containing macronucleoli. Intracytoplasmic, membrane-bound, rhomboid and rod-shaped crystals with a regular lattice pattern with 50-80 A periodicity were detected by EM study of aspirated tumor cells. CONCLUSION: Light and EM studies of aspirated tumor cells showed diagnostic features of the tumor.

Leiomyosarcoma of the kidney. Report of a case diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology and electron microscopy.

A 41-year-old man presented with a large abdominal tumor that yielded, in the fine needle aspiration biopsy, dyshesive, pleomorphic malignant cells. Electron microscopy of the aspirated material revealed nonepithelial cells showing intracytoplasmic bundles of microfilaments with vague focal densities and micropinocytotic vesicles along the cell membrane, suggesting a malignant leiomyosarcoma, which was confirmed by microscopic examination of the resected right kidney. The patient died four months after surgery from widespread metastases.

Cytology of atypical and malignant meningiomas in intraoperative crush preparations.

Six cases of atypical and malignant meningioma studied by intraoperative crush preparations are reported. Four atypical meningiomas were characterized by large cohesive and dyshesive cell clusters showing slightly pleomorphic nuclei and scant cytoplasm. The papillary meningioma yielded dyshesive groups of pleomorphic cells with variable and well-defined cytoplasm. The malignant meningioma, hemangiopericytic type, showed dyshesive cells with scant, ill-defined cytoplasm and spindle-shaped or vesicular nuclei.
