Effect of twelve antimicrobial drugs on the colonization resistance of the digestive tract of mice and on endogenous potentially pathogenic bacteria.

Twelve antimicrobial drugs were studied for their effect on the endogenous aerobic potentially pathogenic bacteria (Enterobacteriaceae, Streptococcus faecalis) in the intestines and on the colonization resistance (CR) of the digestive tract. Three subclasses of antimicrobial drugs could be recognized: (1) those which suppress the CR following low oral doses (rifamycin, penicillin V, cloxacillin, fenethicillin); (2) those in which the CR is suppressed only following relatively high oral doses (amoxycillin); and (3) those in which no obvious suppression of the CR was noticed even following substantial oral doses (nalidixic acid, cinoxacin, co-trimoxazole, oral cephalosporins, piv-mecillinam and doxycyclin). Some of the drugs in the third category were found to suppress endogenous Enterobacteriaceae (nalidixic acid, co-trimoxazole, piv-mecillinam and doxycyclin) and S. faecalis (doxycyclin) at dose levels at which they did not decrease CR.

Separation and characterization of hexokinase I subtypes from human erythrocytes.

Hexokinase (ATP: D-hexose 6-phosphotransferase, EC 2.7.1.1) type 1 from human erythrocytes exists in four electrophoretical distinct forms, termed Ia, Ib, Ic and Id in order of their increasing anodal electrophoretic mobility at pH 8.8. We were able to separate type Ia, Ib and Icd on phosphocellulose by using a discontinuous gradient elution. The three chromatographically distinct forms do not differ in their affinity constants for the substrates glucose and MgATP2-. In addition the inhibition by glucose 1,6-diphosphate does not differ significantly for all forms. However, the regulation of these inhibitions by inorganic phosphate is much less for type Ia compared to the other subtypes (P = 0.001). Aging of the red cells is accompanied by a relative increase of the proportion of type Ic and Ia, which is the less regulated form of the enzyme. This shift in electrophoretic and regulatory properties is argued to be due to a post-translational modification of the primary enzyme.

EEG-responses caused by environmental noise during sleep their relationships to exogenic and endogenic influences.

At a certain level of intensity acoustical stimuli occurring during the night lead to sleep disorders. Whereas presumed after-effects (decrease of performance, functional and organic diseases) can as yet not be related to noise, it is evident that the primary effects which can be recorded immediately after stimulus onset are caused by noise. Because of the small number of experimental trials carried out in different investigations, the results of each single paper can only be tentative. Therefore--concerning awakening reactions and less than a change of at least one sleep stage--the data from publications of comparable method and evaluation have been summarised. With these data all calculations have been repeated. The results and influence of several exogenic and endogenic factos are demonstrated. Becuase of the different methods used only 10 out of 60 publications have been used. In spite of this restriction of data, at least as far as trends are concerned, they appear to be consistent; numerical results should at this stage only be regarded as tentative.

Disturbance of sleep by sonic booms.

After a pilot study (2 subjects, 19 nights) we tested two different subjects during 57 nights, administering sonic booms (1 mb, 300 ms; sound level of sonic boom in the bedroom 80-85 dB (A) and recording EEG and peripheral blood volume. After 7 nights without noise, 30 nights with either 2 or 4 sonic booms (alternately) were applied. After 10 more nights without noise, four nights with 8 and 16 bangs followed alternately. The last 6 nights were used as a comparison phase. Results showed that distrubance was obvious during all periods of noise. No adaptation could be observed during any of the experiments. On the contrary, during the night with 4 bangs there was a tendency for compensation, e.g., in the last two thirds of nights with 4 bangs, the total time of deep sleep was comparable with the nights without any noise.
