The prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) among young people in Russia is examined for the recent decade. Risk factors and organization of STI patients detection, the knowledge of young people about STI are analyzed. Approaches to prevention of these diseases in the society are outlined.
The paper considers topical problems of medical examination of young men to define the category of their fitness for military service and organizational aspects of three-stage implementation in this area under the present conditions. Appropriate methods for evaluating economic efficiency have been developed and tested. They make it possible to deduce in situ an integral to assess activities in medical providing the preparation of young men for military service in the context of years, some nosological entities, and medical facilities.

The morbidity with temporary disability was studied by the results of regular medical examinations of workers from a lead-producing plant. The working conditions at this plant exert adverse effects on digestive organs.
Medico-demographic processes and socio-hygienic characteristics of the population of a large city, both at an individual and familial levels, as well as territorial characteristics of residence, should be taken into consideration when developing measures for medicosocial care of the population. Analysis of the attitude of 380 city families to the activities, personality, and professional skills of local therapists and pediatricians and to the idea of primary health care rendered by a physician of a general profile demonstrated an increased activity of the families in the "physician-patient" system and confirmed the necessity of improving medicosocial care of a city family, expansion of prophylactic work with the population with due consideration for factors which have an impact on population health.
The paper deals with a pressing problem: activities of centers of sanitary and epidemiological survey under new economic conditions. The authors discuss problems of centralization and adaptation of sanitary epidemiological service under present-day economic conditions. They analyze the opinions of heads of sanitary epidemiological institutions from various regions of Russia on the present-day status of organization and management of the service. Assessment of the sources of additional financing of the institutions, of new forms of labor organization of departments and specialists, of distribution of additional allotments at sanitary epidemiological institutions is presented. Suggestions on improvement of the activities of institutions engaged in sanitary epidemiological survey under conditions of reformation of sanitary epidemiological service are offered.
A socioeconomic and medicodemographic analysis of modern problems related to population health protection in the oil and gas extraction regions of Tyumen Province has been carried out under conditions of radical reconstruction of the national economy. Changes in the parameters of natural migration of the population for each year over a period of 1991 to 1995 are followed up, and specific features of the migration processes, effects of socioeconomic and medical factors on the health status of individual population groups, rates of increment in the number of disabled subjects, and population mortality from various causes analyzed. The authors discuss the status of public health services and offer measures for improving their efficacy in the above regions.

The study is devoted to the problem of scientific validation for the development of legal basis of sanitary and epidemiological welfare of the population of Russia. Many-year complex expert and analytical studies of the valid and newly created laws in this sphere helped design a conceptual model of the development and improvement of the system of sanitary legislation.
Validates a complex of methodological approaches to assessing the efficiency of sanitary epidemiological institutions today. Shows the specificities of such assessment for the institutions of the first-level management. Validates a demonstration model for computer processing of data on the efficiency of departments of environmental hygiene and of specialists in this field and recommends this model for regional centers of State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance.
The authors offer a scientifically-based rationale for the system of management of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service and its institutions under modern socioeconomic conditions in Russia. Organizational models of the structure of State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance Centers are offered and their functions determined for various levels of management. A concept of development and organizational structure of the service and its institutions is proposed, aimed at provision of sanitary and epidemiological well-being in the Russian Federation.

Structural and functional changes in the system of laboratory provision of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service under modern economic conditions had a positive impact on the number and quality of laboratory studies. The concept of rearrangement of laboratory service for the period of up to the year 2000 and its staff and material provision improved the quality of laboratory work and eventually the quality of sanitary epidemiological surveillance at the very first stages of its realization.
