Assessment of the skin penetration properties of different carrier vehicles for topically applied cortisol.

Four commercially available topical preparations of cortisol, Alphaderm, Calmurid HC, Efcortelan and Topisone, had trace quantities of tritiated cortisol added to them. The resultant radiolabelled creams were applied to the dorsum of the pig and the penetration of the steroid was assessed. Alphaderm was shown to deliver approximately 16.0 times more cortisol to the skin than Topisone, approximately 8.0 times more than Efcortelan and approximately 3.0 times more than Calmurid HC.

Diameters of bronchi at asymmetrical divisions.

The weight, and hence volume, of a cast of the bronchial tree of a sheep distal to any point was found to be a function of the diameter of the bronchus at that point. This result has been used to derive a relationship between the diameter of a bronchus and the diameters of its branches which is applicable to different types of branching and is consistent with principles of minimum energy loss within the bronchial tree.

Nonuniform distribution of sodium in the rat hepatocyte.

The volume of the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum (including Golgi complex), mitochondria, and cytoplasmic ground substance was measured in rat hepatocytes by stereological methods. The Na content was also measured by flame photometry. Variations in Na content correlated significantly with variations in volume of nucleus and endoplasmic reticulum. From the correlation parameters, Na concentrations were estimated as follows: nucleus, 108 mM; endoplasmic reticulum (ER) (including Golgie complex) 27 mM; cytoplasm (including and remaining organelles) 16 mM.
