[Use of muscle aspiration biopsy needle for diagnostic purposes].

The needle for aspiration biopsy of skeletal muscle, previously developed for biochemical and physiological purposes, has been introduced in the diagnosis of muscular and vascular diseases. Evidence is presented that this needle is a useful tool for routine evaluation of such disorders.

Formation and in-vivo-distribution of different 99mTc-Sn-pyrophosphate complexes.

The formation of two different 99mTc-Sn-pyrophosphate complexes was determined by evaluation of their in vivo distribution in rats. It was found that formation of a 2 : 2 Sn : PyP complex, which is bone seeking, is depending as well on the pyrophosphate as on the hydrogen ion concentration in the equilibrium. On the contrary, formation of a 2 : 1 Sn : PyP complex, which shows no bone affinity but concentrate in the kidneys, is hydrogen ion independent and occurs even at very low pyrophosphate concentrations. The probable structure of these complexes is discussed.

Interaction between dehydroepiandrosterone, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and cyclic adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate in neoplastic and normal human mammary tissue.

When total DHEA, G-6-PDH activity, and c-AMP were determined in human neoplastic mammary tissue and corresponding normal tissue the G-6-PDH activity in the former tissue greatly exceeded that found in normal tissue. On the other hand, a remarkable decrease of total DHEA and c-AMP could be detected in cancer tissue, hinting at the participation of DHEA in the intracellular regulation of G-6-PDH and c-AMP levels.

32P-therapy in polycythemia vera.

A group of 52 consecutive patients with polycythemia vera was submitted to long-term therapy with radioactive phosphorus (32P). Initial phase of therapy induced complete remissions (normalization of hematogram; spleen not palpable) in 45% of the patients, and partial remissions in the remaining 55%. During maintenance therapy of the complete remission group, mean remission time was about 3.5 years. Individual remission times ranged between 1 and 6 years. In the group of patients with incomplete remission, mean remission time increased with the progression of the disease due to gradual development of "spent" -polycythemia. In patients with splenomegaly, remission time was negatively correlated to spleen size. In both groups the increment of annual accumulated dose averaged 2.4 mCi 32P. When considering polycythemia related causes of death only, mean survival time attained 12 years after initial treatment with 32P. Acute leukemia occurred in 2 patients (4%).

[The influence of bicycle ergometer work and oral glucose administration on the muscle hexokinase activity in man (author's transl)].

The influence of orally administered carbohydrates and bicycle work on muscle hexokinase activity, blood glucose, and serum insulin levels were studied in 6 young men. Continuously administered glucose of a total amount of 150 g caused a significant increase in hexokinase activity within 3 hrs. Working at a load of 155 to 195 Watt led to an initial increase of hexokinase activity. At the end of the working period hexokinase activity had fallen to resting values. The possible mechanisms of action are discussed.

[Experiences with radioactive phosphorus therapy in cases of polycythemia vera (author's transl)].

Retrospective studies were carried out in 52 patients with polycythemia vera who were treated with radioactive phosphorus (32-P) over periods ranging between 4 and 24 years. Control of hematopoiesis was achieved in all patients. Duration of the remission induced differed considerably in the individual patients. Mean remission lasted 3-4 years. After 13 years of 32-P treatment, the mean duration of remission lengthened due to gradual transition of some cases into "spent" polycythemia. The mean annual dose of 32-P was about 2.4 mCi. In patients with long-term remissions, the dose accumulated per year was markedly less. These patients probably represent optimal preconditions for 32-P therapy. Mean survival was 12.5 years. The majority of the patients died from thorombo-embolie events or hemorrhage; incidence of acute leukemia was about 4%.

[Family studies for detection of latent psoriatics by assay of alterations in steroid metabolism (author's transl)].

In psoriasis changes of the DHEA metabolism could be demonstrated. These genetically determined basic alterations may represent an important factor for the manifestation of psoriasis. They consist of a decreased penetration of DHEA through the cell membrane and an increased reduction of DHEA to ADIOL, leading to a reduced DHEA/ADIOL ratio. In the present investigations the question was whether the assay of these parameters may aid in the detection of latent psoriasis. For this purpose 31 members form 6 unselected families of psoriatics (8 manifested psoriatics, 18 potential psoriatics, 5 clinically and anamnestically healthy family members by marriage) as well as 6 further controls were examined. It could be shown that those changes in the DHEA metabolism, which are evident in manifested psoriatics also occur at least in part of potential psoriatics. However, both parameters investigated do not always behave the same way. Hence, from the present data a satisfactory diagnosis of latent psoriasis does not seem possible. Still, the estimation of the above parameters may aid in the attempts to define latent psoriasis. Further investigations of such families are warranted for final elucidation of this problem.

[Aeromonas punctata subsp. caviae as the causative agent of acute gastroenteritis (author's transl)].

Since in the past, Aeromonas hydrophila had been isolated from all cases of human infection described. A. punctata and the anaerogenic sub-species were considered as apathogenic. From the case described, a close association between acute diarrhea with vomiting and the identification of A. punctata subsp. caviae becomes evident so that a conditional pathogenicity of this sub-species must be assumed. The question is discussed whether a preceding disturbance of the intestinal habitat in the presence of a particular susceptibility of the gastrointestinal tract promoted gastro-enteritis. Infection may have been brought about by the ingestion of surface water contaminated by sewage. Attention is again drawn to the fact that in the case of enteritis occuring during the open-air bathing season, faeces samples should also be examined for their Aeromonas content which may be performed by a simple indophenol or so-called cytochrome oxidase reaction of the aerobic flora in feces by rubbing off colonies into a corresponding test strip.
