Radiographs were available for study for 466 of 2,000 patients with primary gout who were followed clinically for as long as 30 years. The radiographic manifestations at various stages of the disease and the effect of therapy were studied in 80 patients. New radiographic signs, such as lace pattern, intracortical lesions, and subchondral compressions, are emphasized as well as the frequency of tophaceous lesions affecting the dorsum of the feet.
The lectin present in the mucus of the snail Arion empiricorum was isolated by ion exchange chromatography. Purity was demonstrated by immunelectrophoretic analysis, immunization studies, and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. With the latter we found a molecular weight of 43,000. Hemagglutination inhibition studies revealed that carbohydrates play a minor role in the agglutination reaction of A. empiricorum lectin. Stronger inhibition could be achieved with human serum and the serum of several animal species. These findings were clarified by the demonstration that some serum proteins were precipitated by A. empiricorum lectin. Besides its agglutinating and precipitating properties the purified A. empiricorum lectin possesses proteinase-inhibiting properties, as demonstrated by the inhibition of casein-digestion by trypsin and plasmin.
Forty patients suffering from various pathological conditions of the extremities were examined by computed tomography (CT) and the results were correlated with conventional imaging techniques: plain radiography, conventional tomograms, angiograms, and radionuclide scanning. The patients' ages ranged from 4 to 80 years. The study included cases of osteomyelitis, benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors, metabolic disorders, and a case of pulmonary osteoarthropathy. We were able to follow progression and/or regression of osteomyelitis by recording the changes in the attenuation coefficient of the medullary cavity and also were able to determine the extent of the malignant infiltration of the marrow cavity. Contrast enhancement was valuable in demonstrating the vascularity of soft tissue tumors and in determining the extension of primary bone lesions.
The relatively alanine-specific amino peptidase from Brassica napus hydrolyzes dipeptidyl-4-(phenylazo)-phenylamide according to a consecutive mechanism. Enzyme-kinetic studies of dipeptidyl-4-(phenylazo)-phenylamides carried out by means of spectrometrical procedures of measurement are only possible when the increase in the concentration of the fission product p-aminoazobenzene is recorded. For assessing the kinetic parameters of the intermediary steps of the hydrolysis of dipeptidyl-4-(phenylazo)-phenylamides a function is derived describing the dependence of the concentration of fission products of p-aminoazobenzene on reaction time. The satisfactory correspondence of the kinetic parameters calculated for the intermediary-originating substrate L-ala-4-(phenylazo)-phenylamide as substrate demonstrates the applicability of the procedure described in the present paper.

33 renal transplantations in the isohistogeneic rat strains DA/Han and BDE/Han were performed. The transplanted animals were killed at different days after transplantation and the following dates investigated: 1. number of rosette forming spleen cells with donor erythrocytes, calculated for 10,000 spleen cells and to the total number of extracted spleen cells, 2. haemagglutinin titers with donor erythrocytes. 3. titers of serum IgG, 4. Total number of spleen cells, weight of spleens, weight and volumes of kidney transplants and the number of peripheral blood lymphocytes and granulocytes. The results deomonstrate that the method of immunocytoadherence as described by BIOZZI and ZAALBERG in xenogeneic transplantation systems can also be used in allogenic systems. The course of the immune response was biphasic. Quantitation of allorosette forming cells can be considered as a paramter of allograft rejection. The current literature as to the T- or B-cell specificity of rosetting cells is discussed.
An immunoadsorbent, consisting of a copolymer from acrylnitrile and methacrylic acid's beta-amino-ethylester as the insoluble, not gel-like carrier, 1.3-difluor-4.6-dinitrobenzene as the binding substance and isolated sheep spleen lymphocytes, is described. It may be especially useful for the preparation of "pure antibodies" to cells and greater or smaller antigenic particles. The immunoadsorbent can easily be prepared in an one-step method, it is stable, and high flow rates can be obtained in column chromatography.
A lectin which agglutinates Zajdela hepatoma cells; rat red cells and lymphocytes, but no normal rat liver cells, was detected in the mucus, yielded by simple saline extraction, of the two snail species Arion empiricorum (Fér.) and Arion lusitanicus (MAB). The agglutination spectrum involves also human erythrocytes and red cells of several animal species.

Immuno-electrophoretic and serological studies were undertaken to characterise the non-specific serum inhibitor of rubella haemagglutination. The majority of such inhibitor effects come from the beta(1)-lipoproteins. In addition, small inhibitory effects which were due to alpha(1)-lipoproteins were noted in some sera. The result of the tests is influenced less by removing the inhibitor than by conditions of incubation of the serum-antigen mixture, especially pH. The test is more sensitive if it is not performed at optimal pH for haemagglutination.
Methods for measuring enzymatic activity of adenosine deaminase from human erythrocytes were examined and compared with each other. Determination of ADA by the method in which adenosine is converted into inosine with uric acid as the final product by the action of nucleoside phosphorylase and xanthine oxidase appears to yield the most reliable results. In the recommended assay saponin is used for lysis of erythrocytes when testing adenosine deaminase activity in red blood cells. Storage of erythrocyte samples is optimal at +4 degrees C; storage at room temperature or at -20 degrees C leads to loss of adenosine deaminase activity.
A postischemic edema in hind limbs of dogs occurred after a 5 hours tourniquet ischemia. The protein distribution of edematous liquid, serum and lymph has been investigated by immunoelectrophoretic analysis. Using different identification reactions it could be demonstrated, that edematous liquid only differs from serum because of additional appearance of fibrinogen, so corresponding qualitatively and in so far estimated quantitatively to serum plasma. In connection with the osmotic pressure factors and postischemic hyperemia, as they have been demonstrated up to now, the severe changes of permeability seem to be a main factor in pathogenesis of postischemic edemas.
