[Spontaneous rhinorrhea of unusual etiology].

Authors report on the case of one patient exhibiting, since three months, a spontaneous thinorrhea and directed to them with the diagnosis of pituitary tumor. The neuro-roentgenologic inquiry discovers a ventricular dilatation and an evagination of the III rd. ventricle into the pituitary fossa ; it also puts in evidence a tumor of the posterior cerebral fossa. We are dealing here with a meningioma of the posterior aspect of temporal pyramid (petrosal bone). If tumoral hydrocephalus is common, its complication with a spontaneous rhinorrhea is, on the contrary, exceptional. We are therefore obliged to consider the pre-existing in this female patient of a deficiency of the pituitary diaphragm that has favoured the intra-sellar diverticle of the III rd ventricle, in the same manner as it makes possible, in other circumstances the arachnoidocele in the syndrome of empty pituitary fossa. Exeresis of the tumor, by suppressing the intracranial hypertension, stopped the rhinorrhea and has considerably improved the visual signs.

Elevated 80K-H protein in breast cancer: a role for FGF-1 stimulation of 80K-H.

An increase in fibroblast growth factor-1 (FGF-1) is established as part of the cause of several important cancers including breast cancer, but the mechanisms by which it induces malignant behavior are not known. We now report that the protein 80K-H, a substrate for PKC, appears to be part of this mechanism and that it is increased in breast cancer and localizes to the nucleus as part of the mechanism. Our conclusion is based on an examination of a total of 58 biopsy specimens from human breast cancer patients for the presence of relationships between the 80K-H protein and the following: fibroblast growth factor receptor-1 (FGFR-1), tumor grade, microvessel counts (MVC), estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PgR) status. Based on histological grading and immunohistochemical (IHC) assays, we found strong direct relationships between 80K-H and FGFR-1 (r = 0.49, p = 0.003) and tumor grade (r = 0.42, p = 0.006). A trend for a direct relationship was observed with PgR (r=0.27, p=0.087). Notably, 80K-H immunostaining was largely limited to the epithelial cells of the mammary ducts. Subsequently, we studied the effects of FGF-1 on 80K-H in cultured human mammary carcinoma epithelial cells in order to establish a more direct relationship between these two molecules. We observed that FGF-1 treatment of MCF-7 cells stimulated translocation of 80K-H protein to the cell nucleus, as demonstrated by subcellular fractionation studies. Maximal intranuclear 80K-H was observed approximately 30 minutes following FGF-1 treatment. In addition, FGF-1 treatment of MCF-7 cells increased growth and invasion of MCF-7 cells, as demonstrated by cell proliferation and a modified Boyden chamber assay, respectively. Further support for 80K-H nuclearization was provided by the immunostaining of human breast cancer specimens and computer-assisted identification of a putative nuclear localization signal (NLS) near the amino terminus of 80K-H protein structure. These data support the existence of a previously unrecognized FGF-1/80K-H nuclear pathway in progression of human breast cancer and suggest that 80K-H may be useful for the assessment of breast tumor progression.

Estimation of genetic parameters for growth, carcass and overfeeding traits in a white geese strain.

In an experimental strain of white plumage geese created in 1989, two experiments were carried out from 1993 to 1995 in order to estimate genetic parameters for growth, and carcass composition traits in non-overfed animals, and genetic parameters for growth and fatty liver formation in overfed animals. Four hundred and thirty-one non-overfed animals were bred and slaughtered at 11 weeks of age; they were measured for forearm length, keel bone length, chest circumference and breast depth before and after slaughtering. The carcasses were partly dissected in order weigh breast, breast muscle and skin + fat, and abdominal fat. Four hundred and seventy-seven overfed animals were slaughtered at 20 weeks of age; they were measured for "paletot" (breast meat, bone and meat from wings, bone and meat from thigh and legs) weight and liver weight. In these two experiments, the weights had moderate to high heritability values. Breast depth measured on live animals showed a low heritability value. In overfed animals, liver weight showed a high heritability value. Liver weight could be increased by selection without a great effect on "paletot" weight. Thus, obtaining a white plumage geese strain for fatty liver production by selection would be difficult because only 20% of overfed animals had fatty liver. The results did not allow to conclude on the influence of selection on liver weight on carcass traits such as muscle or fatty tissue weight.

[Spontaneous rhinorrhea due to (congenital?) evagination of arachnoidea in the paranasal sinuses].

Report on two cases of spontaneous, intermittent and long lasting spinal fluid rhinorrhea. The lesion responsible of the spinal fluid fistula is a glio-arachnoid expansion of the convexity of the frontal pole, contained into a fibrous pedicle ; it crosses the dura mater and penetrates, through a well individualized bone orifice, into the posterior wall of the frontal sinus or into an ethmoid-frontal cell. This arachnoid diverticle is not associated with an hydrocephalon. In the absence of any traumatic past history, its congenital nature may be admitted. No para-clinical investigation makes possible to detect such a minor abnormity ; the isotopic transit of the spinal fluid may remain silent, when performed at a moment of drying up of the nasal flow. Surgical exploratory study of the anterior level has to be complete, while numerous independent diverticles may coexist.
