The spectrum of respiratory diseases associated with ulcerative colitis. The respiratory diseases associated with ulcerative colitis have recently been recognized, and principally affect the bronchi. Both chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis may develop after many years, some of the patients having already undergone colectomy. Chronic bronchitis is characterized by cough and chronic mucopurulent sputum, and these symptoms may be exacerbated during acute flare-ups of ulcerative colitis. The bronchial lesions are inflammatory and can be reversed by corticosteroid therapy. Bronchiectasis produces similar symptoms, but has distinctive radiological features. Corticosteroids may sometimes reduce the symptoms, but they have no effect on the bronchial lesions. Salicylazosulfapyridine might be responsible for hypersensitivity lung diseases with eosinophilia, but the drug does not seem to be involved in the genesis of these bronchial manifestations. There have been occasional reports of other respiratory diseases associated with ulcerative colitis, including obliterative bronchiolitis, isolated and asymptomatic airflow obstruction, inflammatory tracheal stenosis, pulmonary vasculitis, pleurisy and pleuropericarditis, chronic pneumonia and interstitial fibrosis which may be diffuse or localized to the apices.

A prototype system optimized for automatic registration of CT scans and applications such as subtraction enhancement and CT angiography was evaluated. Co-registration was performed on 50 studies of various types, including CT angiograms. Mean registration speed was 109 s; accuracy was 2.0 mm. Examples of subtraction enhancement and automatic extraction of the vascular tree are provided. Unattended registration was demonstrated in routine application. Subtraction-enhanced images and extraction of the vascular tree may be useful in clinical practice.
Twenty-six human respiratory syncytial virus strains (subgroup A) isolated from three outbreaks in Havana City during the period 1994/95, 1995/96 and 1996/97 were analyzed to determine their antigenic and genetic relationships. Analyses were performed by monoclonal antibodies and restriction mapping (N gene) following amplification of the select region of the virus genome by polymerase chain reaction. All isolated strains were classified as subgroup A by monoclonal antibodies and they showed a restriction pattern NP4 that belonged to subgroup A. Thus the results obtained in this work, showed a close relation (100%) between antigenic and genetic characterization of the isolated strains in our laboratory. These methods permit the examination of large numbers of isolates by molecular techniques, simplifying the researchs into the molecular epidemiology of the virus.

Acute respiratory diseases (ARD) are the most common infections in humans and difficult to prevent. Viruses have been recognized as predominant ethiological agents. In Cuba, ARD constitute a major problem of health and are the first cause of morbidity and important cause of mortality. In this paper, rapid diagnosis was performed to 516 clinical samples which arrived to the Reference Respiratory Viruses Laboratory of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) from different parts of Havana City during 1995, 1996 and 1997. The results obtained have shown 218 positive samples (Influenza A, 89; respiratory syncytial virus 52; Influenza B, 45; Adenovirus, 13; human parainfluenza virus(HPIV)-1, 6; HPIV-2, 3 and HPIV-3, 10). Influenza A was the virus most frequently found in adults, whereas in closed population of teen-agers and adults, Influenza B was frequently found. Furthermore, respiratory syncytial virus was the most important pathogen in children's under 1 year of age.

An estimate of infant and child mortality in the eastern provinces of Cuba is presented using the Brass method as adapted by Trussell. "Estimations by urban and rural zones are also performed within the provinces studied, and results are compared with those possible to obtain by continuous statistics. Results obtained show that in the eastern [part] of the country Holguin and Guantanamo are the provinces with highest infantile mortality rates, and the lowest rates correspond to Granma, followed by Santiago de Cuba." The cellular pathology of Purkinje cells in several degenerative diseases of the cerebellum and its connections was studied with the rapid Golgi method. Purkinje cells from a patient with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (case 1) showed decreased numbers of spiny branchlets. In a patient with a cystic infarct of the cerebellar white matter and chronic deafferentation of the cerebellar cortex (case 2) there was a striking increase in the density of spines on the primary dendrites. No abnormalities were observed in Purkinje cells from two patients with hereditary spinocerebellar degeneration (cases 3 and 4). Purkinje cells in two patients with olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) had severely reduced numbers of dendritic branches. Ballooned proximal axons were found in Purkinje cells with severely damaged dendrites (cases 5 and 6). In contrast to experimental olivary degeneration in laboratory animals, Purkinje cells from patients with OPCA did not have increased numbers of stubby spines in stout proximal dendrites but few spines with long pedicles were observed in the proximal segment of the primary dendrites and in the cellular body.
UNLABELLED: Ascites formation is a recognized complication of chronic hemodialysis (CHD). The cause is an enigma after tumors, tuberculosis, and heart, liver, and pancreatic diseases are excluded. A 55-year-old patient who developed intractable ascites about 6 months after starting CHD was studied. The premise was that osmotic disequilibrium during HD may be the causative factor. Other causes of ascites were excluded. The study method relied on determining simultaneous serum and ascites osmolality (Sosm and Aosm) at the start and finish of a standard 4 hour HD session. THE RESULTS: Sosm and Aosm at the start averaged 310 and 309 mosm/L, respectively. At the end, Sosm averaged 285 and Aosm averaged 301 mosm/L, giving a 16 mosm concentration gradient. Two days later, Sosm and Aosm were equal again. It is concluded that the osmotic gradient at the end of 4 hours of HD favors movement of water from the intravascular space into the ascitic fluid space until osmotic equilibrium is once again achieved.
