Normal limits of the lateral cerebral ventricles on the lateral phlebogram: a statistical analysis.

The highest points of the subependymal veins of the lateral cerebral ventricles (frontal horn, body and atrium) and the height of the body have been evaluated in selected patients. Through a statistical analysis, they have been demonstrated to depend on the height of the supratentorial compartment of the skull. Taking into account this relation, the results obtained furnish reliable criteria for evaluating ventricular enlargement or sectional deformity.

Inversion of the unnatural cis C/D sterol ring junction of 5alpha, 14beta-cholest-7en-3beta-ol by rat-liver enzymes.

Labelled 5alpha, 14beta-cholest-7-en-3beta-ol with the 'unnatural' cis C/D ring junction was synthesized. Incubations of this sterol with rat liver homogenate under aerobic conditions gave radioactive 5alpha-cholest-7-en-3beta-ol, 5alpha-cholest-8(14)-en-3beta-ol andcholesterol indicating the presence of enzymes in the rat liver capable of inverting the C/D cis to a trans configuration. No radioactivity was found associated with added 14beta-cholesterol showing the specificity of the 14alpha configuration for the enzymic conversion of a sterol molecule into cholesterol.

New broad-spectrum alkylthio cephalosporins.

A series of 7-substituted alkyl-thio-acylaminocephalosporins with the following general formula were prepared and tested for in vitro antibacterial activity: (formula: see text). We tried in our research to find any relationship between antibacterial activity and pharmacokinetic properties on the one hand, and chemical structure on the other. The most interesting products were also studied for their in vivo antibacterial activity in experimental acute systemic infections in the mouse.

Drive and performance of ventilatory system during rebreathing.

In eight normal subjects, eight patients with asthma, and six patients with chronic obstructive lung disease, the first derivative of occlusion pressure at FRC during rebreathing has been studied. The maximal dP/dt was always lower in patients. Such a behavior may depend on reduced neuronal discharge as well as on reduced effectiveness of the contraction of the respiratory muscles. Though (dP/dt)max. may provide a reliable measure of the sensitivity of the respiratory center only in a homogeneous group, the results of plotting its value against ventilation and end-tidal Pco2 confirm the failure of the thoracomuscular system to convert the output of respiratory centers into increase of pulmonary pressure and ventilation.

Radioisotopic study of the adrenal glands using 131I-19-iodocholesterol.

Scintigraphy of the adrenal gland with 131I-19-iodocholesterol has recently been added to radiological techniques in adrenal imaging and has been used successfully to demonstrate anatomical and functional disorders of the adrenals in a variety of clinical situations. A review of the authors' experience stresses the diagnostic value of this method. Radiological findings and results of scintillation imaging are complementary: their comparison improves and clarifes indications for scintigraphy. Hyperadrenal cortical diseases always gave satisfactory scintigrams, the most interesting results being obtained in adrenal cortical hyperplasia and unilateral hyperfunctioning adenomas. In these cases the evaluation of the response to stimulation or suppression tests was very useful. On the other hand scintigraphy was less valuable in demonstrating malignant and non malignant tumours.

Catabolism of cholesterol by bovine adrenal-cortex enzymes: in vitro formation of oxygenated sterols and side-chain cleavage products.

The identification of sterols and steroids formed by incubation of [7alph-3H, 26-14C]cholesterol with mitochondrial enzymes from bovine adrenal cortex is reported. Only 17% of the radioactivity associated with cholesterol metabolites was found in pregnenolone, whereas 15% was reliable to oxygenated sterols and 6% to steroid compounds. The significance of the formation of these compounds is discussed particularly as regards oxygenated cholesterol derivatives.

Surgical indications in normotensive hydrocephalus. A retrospective analysis of the relations of some diagnostic findings to the results of surgical treatment.

Twenty two of fifty five patients initially suspected of suffering from normotensive hydrocephalus were surgically treated (CSF ventriculoatrial shunt). The results of surgery were related to the findings of the different diagnostic examinations (pneumoencephalography, isotope cisternography, transfer fron CSF to blood of isotope labelled serum albumin, constant infusion manometric test, long lasting intraventricular pressure recording). 1.Pneumoencephalography, intraventricular pressure recording, and, above all, isotope cisternography provided the most reliable data for diagnosis and surgical prognosis. 2. The combined use of pneumoencephalography and isotope cisternography was sufficient for a correct diagnosis and surgical prognosis in about 50% of the patients examined. 3. When the diagnostic information given by the combined results of the two above examinations was not sufficient, intraventricular pressure recording proved to be the most useful examination to supplement it. 4. The relation of the results of the study of transfer of istope labelled serum albumin from CSF to blood and of the constant infusion manometric test to the surgical outcome was uncertain.

Correlation between release of free arachidonic acid and prostaglandin formation in brain cortex and cerebellum.

Levels of free arachidonic acid and of prostaglandin F2alpha and E2 have been measured in both brain cortex and cerebellum of rats killed by focussed microwave irradiation, and after decapitation followed by ischemia. The same parameters were studied during incubation assays. It was found that: a) after ischemia levels of both free arachidonic acid and of prostaglandins in cerebellum are lower than in brain cortex, b) formation of prostaglandins from endogenous precursor in incubated cortex is higher than in cerebellum, c) release of free arachidonic acid occurs mainly during the time interval between the sacrifice of the animals and the beginning of the incubation, whereas prostaglandins are formed mainly during the incubation assay. The correlation between release of free arachidonic acid and prostaglandin formation is discussed.

Clinical value of rebreathing test in obstructive lung diseases.

The ventilatory response to CO2 inhalation, using rebreathing method, was studied in normal subjects and in patients with bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease. The patients with lung disease had flatter CO2 response curves. However, it the ventilation was expressed as a fraction of the maximal voluntary ventilation, the difference between normal subjects and patients disappeared. The reduced ventilatory response of these patients may be of mechanical origin and not depending on reduced CO2 sensitivity. The high lung volume of these patients may be the mean factor of the mechanical disadvantage of thoracomuscular system.
