[Microbiological study of the correlation between pontics and their mucosal and bone bases].

Authors investigated the possible relationship between different types of ponties and the development of dental plaque. Microbiological examinations revealed, that keeping to the strictest hygiene rules, even the least proposed saddle ponties should be omitted. Attention is called to the utmost importance of motivation and instruction in case of patients wearing bridges.

Clinical and prognostic significance of the Philadelphia chromosome in adult patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Between 1983 and 1991 the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph1) was found in bone marrow and/or peripheral blood cells of 25 adult patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The Ph1 as sole anomaly was seen in 13 patients, while six patients had additional structural and another six structural and numerical aberrations. Most patients (23/25) received combination chemotherapy according to the BMFT protocols 1/81, 2/84, 3/87, and 4/89. For 25 evaluable patients two early deaths, two treatment failures, two partial remissions (PR), and 19 complete remissions (CR) after phase 1 or 2 of the induction regimen were recorded. Two of these 19 patients who achieved CR are presently disease free, whereas 17 have relapsed after a median duration of remission of 9 months. Actuarial median survival for all patients was 13 months. The probability of continuous complete remission (CCR) after 39 months, as well as that of survival after 40 months, is only 6%. Our results confirm that the presence of the Ph1 is associated with a poor prognosis in adult-ALL patients. Therefore, whenever first CR is obtained and an HLA-identical donor is available, allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) should be performed at once, the more so, since transplantation in second CR seems to offer no cure. Future studies will have to show whether an intensified cytotoxic therapy can improve the prognosis of Ph1(+)-ALL.

An experimental study of vertical deviations induced by different interocclusal recording materials.

This study was designed to determine vertical deviations in mounting casts on an articulator as affected by the recording material. Five different recording materials were tested after storage of the records for 30 minutes, 6 hours, and 24 hours. Two measuring systems were used to register simultaneously the vertical errors at the occlusal plane and at the condyle of an articulator. The results indicated that the measurements made at the condyle cannot detect the vertical deviations induced at the occlusal surfaces. None of the materials tested gave reliable results. Advantages, disadvantages, and indications of the different materials were discussed.

Bicuspid

An experimental study on the influence of the derived casts on the accuracy of different recording materials. Part I: Plaster, impression compound, and wax.

An experimental study was conducted to analyze the accuracy of transferring jaw relations with recording materials and the derived casts. A specific measuring system was designed to determine three-dimensional deviations of the condyles of an articulator. Four interocclusal recording materials were analyzed after various storage periods. The results indicated that the accuracy of the derived cast had a critical influence on the accuracy of the transferred jaw relations. None of the materials were reliable; the most accurate material generated deviations of approximately 300 microns.

Analysis of Variance

An experimental study on the influence of the derived casts on the accuracy of different recording materials. Part II: Polyether, acrylic resin, and corrected wax wafer.

A specific testing system was used to determine the three-dimensional changes of interocclusal registration materials for a simulated patient and the derived stone casts. The results indicated that the deviations of the derived casts were more pronounced than the original models. There was great heterogeneity with all recording materials and the materials were not consistently accurate after limited storage of 30 minutes.

Acrylic Resins

Study of the accuracy of different recording materials.

An experimental study was conducted to determine the three-dimensional errors in mounting casts affected by the interocclusal recording materials. Eight commonly used materials or combinations were tested after various storage periods. The results indicated that all the materials induced asymmetric deviations of the condyles after each storage period. Impression plaster was the most accurate and dimensionally stable material; polyether was the second most accurate material, but it must be used within 6 hours. Correction of the teeth imprints with a low-viscosity material was beneficial only in combination with wax wafers.

The binding of ciamexone to globin: its demonstration and some accompanying effects in rats.

The 2-cyanaziridines Ciamexone and Azimexone in doses of 100 and 500 mg/kg lead to a reversible dose-dependent formation of thermolabile hemoglobin and Heinz bodies, a lowered erythrocyte count, and splenomegaly. According to our investigations these effects may have been caused by a covalent binding of the 2-cyanaziridines or their metabolites to globin in the erythrocytes. This binding was shown by gel electrophoresis using 14C-labeled Ciamexone. The change of the globin had no influence on the oxygen affinity of the hemoglobin.
