Identification of nitric oxide (NO) in human blood.

The amount of nitric oxide (NO) in the blood of residents of urban and suburban areas was measured under steady-state conditions by isotopic dilution with N15O, followed by field-ionization mass spectrometry. Approximately 20 nmoles of NO per ml of blood was characteristic of both smokers and nonsmokers, except for one of the eight subjects who had a significantly lower level. Monkeys (Macaca speciosa) had values comparable to those of seven human subjects, and rats had values like that of the unique human subject. Whether the origin of the NO was endogenous or exogenous was not determined.

Are we providing for ethnic diversity in accident & emergency (A&E) departments?

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to find what data on ethnicity are collected in North Thames Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments. Also to investigate how the data are used, what staff recruitment and training policies were in place, and to discover whether written material in different languages and interpreters were available. METHODS: This was a qualitative study using semi-structured questionnaires. A range of staff working in A&E departments in North Thames (that had a primary care initiative in place) were interviewed. RESULTS: Ethnic origin was recorded in all units but not on every patient. Only one unit had actively recruited staff from an ethnic minority. None of the units had formal training in place for staff to gain an appreciation of issues facing patients from ethnic minorities. Interpreters and written material in appropriate languages were available in all units. CONCLUSIONS: Whilst the needs of patients from ethnic minorities were recognised in all of the units there appeared to be scope for further research and development. There is a need for providers to undertake comprehensive studies on the utilisation and health needs of ethnic minorities attending both primary care and A&E services. Only with this information can more appropriate services be provided.

A look at management roles and operating environments of medical schools.

In order to reach a better understanding of the many complexities involved in the management of schools of medicine, in 1980-81 a survey was taken of deans of medicine and department chairs of medicine, surgery, and family practice at US medical schools. The major attributes of the managerial work environment are identified and provide a foundation for further inquiry into the overall operating effectiveness of schools of medicine.

The value of accurate A/R information.

The understanding and management of an accounts receivable system in a medical group practice is particularly important to administrators in today's economy. As the authors explain, an accurate information system can provide the medical group with valuable information regarding its financial condition and cash flow collections status, as well as help plan for future funding needs.
