[Injuries of the ligaments of the knee joint; follow-up results (author's transl)].

From 1978 to 1979 87 patients with singular and combined injuries of the ligaments of the kneejoint underwent surgery at the Department for Traumatic Surgery of Mannheim. 62 (71.3%) patients could be examined one to two years after operation. In uncomplicated cases of instability of the kneejoint a good to excellent result could be achieved in 62%. In combined instability only 40% good to excellent results were achieved, due to the higher severity of the injury. The classification was measured according to a modified scheme of Gotzen and co-workers [2a].

Intervening sequences in ribosomal RNA genes and bobbed phenotype in Drosophila hydei.

The "bobbed' (bb) mutation in Drosophila is represented phenotypically by shortened and abnormally thin scutellar bristles and by delayed development. There is a direct correlation between bristle size and ribosomal RNA (rRNA) synthesis, and the bb mutation was at first explained as a deficiency of rRNA genes (rDNA). However, the bb phenotype can occur in Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei with high rDNA content, while phenotypically wild-type flies are known with few rRNA genes, suggesting that what matters is not the number of rRNA genes but their transcriptional activity. In D. melanogaster, it has recently emerged that rRNA genes interrupted by an intervening sequence are not transcribed. We now report that in D. hydei, the length of the scutellar bristle is directly proportional to the number of rRNA genes without this intervening sequence.

[Results of treatment on 56 sarcomas of the uterus between 1953 and 1977 (author's transl)].

At the Frauenklinik Finkenau Hamburg a total of 56 women were treated for sarcoma of the uterus between 1953 and 1977. Accounting for 1.2% of all malignancies, sarcoma is a rare tumor. The different histological types are analysed with respect to age distribution, endocrine status, preceding pregnancies, etc. Treatment results over a 15 years period and a subsequent 10 years period were compared. Symptoms and local findings show great variability. Preoperative diagnostic procedures frequently did not result in final diagnosis. The mode of therapy changed over the long period of 25 years. Forty-nine patients were followed up over a period of more than 10 years. In Patients with sarcomas which had derived from preexisting myomas, the 10 year survival rate was 89% (16/18). The total 10 year survival rate was 57% (28/49). Effectiveness of different therapeutic approaches such as operation, irradiation, and cytostatic therapy is demonstrated. Local recurrences and distant metastases usually occurred within 2 years after primary treatment. One case with successful chemotherapy of pulmonary metastases of leiomyosarcoma is demonstrated showing complete remission over a period of 28 months.

[Correct timing of work on a hard plaster of Paris model].

Of the individuals in Hamburg questioned, 48% waited an average of 1 to 2 hours after making a stone cast before proceeding with work on it; 38%, 1 day; and only 2%, more than 1 day. The material test however showed that 5 or 6 days of storage at room temperature are necessary before optimal values are obtained for compressive strength, ball-thrust hardness, and abrasive hardness. The greatest amount of expansion with type IV stone plaster, removed from the cast after 30 minutes, was measured between 8 and 24 hours at room temperature, after the plaster had been mixed. The least changes in dimension were recorded after a 5-day contractive phase. Given these results, the stone cast should be stored for 5 to 6 days at room temperature before work is resumed on it if precision work is to be done.
