Kinetics of hybridization to human DNA of heterogeneous nuclear RNA isolated from normal human lymphoblasts and acute leukemia blast cells.

Heterogeneous nuclear RNA was extracted from normal PHA-stimulated human lymphocytes and acute myeloid leukemia blast cells. Experiments were performed to determine the hybridization kinetics of these RNA's to human DNA. The best least squares solutions indicate in the hybridization reaction of both normal and leukemic RNA two main components. For leukemic cell RNA the rate constants of both components were significantly different from that of normal cell RNA. In particular, the difference between the rate constants of the second lower component suggests that the slowly hybridizing sequences in leukemic cell RNA have a degree of repetition higher than of the corresponding sequences of normal cell RNA.

Angiographic and pathologic correlations in Prinzmetal variants angina.

The coronary-arteriographic and pathologic findings in a case of Prinzmetal's angina are reported. Right coronary arteriograms performed in the absence of pain showed only minor stenotic changes, whereas those performed during an anginal attack revealed a spastic occlusion involving almost the entire vessel. Anatomic examination revealed obstructive lesions of the right coronary artery, more pronounced at the site where spasm had started, due to concentric atherosclerotic thickening of the inner wall, whereas the elastic fibers and the muscular ring of the tunica media were preserved. These findings suggest (1) the need for great caution before assuming on purely angiographic bases that spasm may affect a normal coronary artery and (2) the possibility that spasm occurs in a markedly diseased and stenotic segment of a coronary artery as long as the contractile tissue of the tunica media is preserved.

Ileum-like congenital elongation of the proximal descending aorta.

A case of extraordinary congenital elongation of the proximal descending aorta giving origin to multiple aortic loops, packed in the left-postero-superior mediastinum, is presented. Clinical findings, that is, mid-late systolic ejection murmur, a delayed peak of the femoral pulse, blood pressure in the legs slightly lower than in the arms, were considered noncontributory from the diagnostic point of view, since they may also be present in mild aortic coarctation and in aortic kinking. Chest roentgenogram and fluoroscopy showing 2 pulsating masses protruding to the left of the proximal descending aorta suggested the presence of a more complex aortic malformation. Only angiography provided a correct diagnosis and detected some associated abnormalities as well.

[Coronary spasm and acute coronary insufficiency (author's transly)].

A series of cases illustrating a spectrum of acute coronary episodes associated with transient subepicardial injury, namely the variant form of angina, angina intermedia with electrocardiographic changes similar to those of the variant angina, acute myocardial infarction complicated by variant angina with electrocardiographic changes localized to the infarcted area, acute myocardial infarction preceded and followed by variant angina, is presented. The role of a coronary spasm as a common mechanism of the above mentioned episodes is postulated. Coronarographic demonstration of this mechanism is produced.

[Value of caudo-cranial and left anterior obleque projections in the angiographic study of the left coronary artery].

The use of new apparatus which offers an unlimited choice of projections in the frontal and sagittal planes is a great step forward in the radiological investigation of the coronary arterial tree. The results obtained with the left anterior oblique caudo-cranial projection have been reported. In a series of 100 consecutive coronary arteriographies, this method showed up lesions which were passed over or unnoticed, or showed up the magnitude of stenoses which had been underestimated in the standard projections, in 24 cases. From among these, it was possible to show up 6 stenoses which were at or above the 75% level; 4 of these were on the diagonal artery, 1 on the anterior desceinding artery, and one on the left coronary trunk. In 16 other patients it confirmed the degree of stenosis, which had been uncertain when assessed by the usual technique. All in all, it gave useful information in 40% of cases. This new projection is especially useful for investigation the proximal parts of the branches of the trunk of the left coronary artery.
