Evaluation of herbicide migration from water to gorgonzola and mozzarella cheeses in industrial processing.

The possibility of migration of atrazine, simazine, terbuthylazine, molinate and bentazon herbicides from contaminated water used in the manufacture of gorgonzola and mozzarella cheeses was verified in an industrial plant in an agricultural area in northern Italy. In a milk-processing plant, water samples were drawn from five wells; samples of milk, curd and finished products were collected from the respective production lines. In all samples, the herbicide residues were detected by gas chromatographic analysis. The results show that herbicide residues detected in water were not found in the finished products even if residues were found in the intermediate products (curd).

Preparation and characterization of solid lipid nanoparticles containing cloricromene.

This article describes the development of solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) as colloidal carriers for cloricromene. Nanoparticles were prepared by the microemulsion or precipitation technique. In vitro drug release profile from SLN was studied under various experimental conditions mimicking some body fluids. The drug release rate of drug at pH 7.4 and human plasma is high. In plasma, after 15 min, about 70% of drug was released. The cloricromene that was not released within 4 hr was found in the SLN. This result suggests that this colloidal system could be useful for targeted drug delivery to the central nervous system after intravenous administration.

Cryoimmunotherapy: a conference report.

Cryosurgery (in situ freezing) had been efficaciously employed for the treatment of malignant neoplasms. In situ freezing of a number of tissue has been demonstrated to constitute an antigenic stimulus (comparable to that obtained through the parenteral administration of antigen) capable of generating a specific immunologic response against autologous antigens of the frozen tissue, ergo, cryostimulation, However, if cryosurgery is to be employed not only for ablation of tumor, but also as a possible means of engendering an immunologic response to tumor (primary, as well as secondary, i.e., metastases), ergo, cryoimmunotherapy, several factors must be given careful consideration. It is with the further elucidation of these factors and the continuing endeavor to establish criteria for evaluating the candidacy of the cancer patient for cryoimmunotherapy and their postoperative responsiveness that have been reviewed, assessed and updated.

Combined use of gemcitabine and radiation in mice.

The aim of this study was to explore, in a murine tumor, if the effectiveness of radiation, in doses and schedules commonly used in clinical practice is potentiated by the combined use of the recently developed drug gemcitabine. Gemcitabine (30-360 mg/kg b.w.) was administered i.p. in female C3D2F1 mice bearing a mammary adenocarcinoma alone or combined with X-rays. Firstly, gemcitabine (single administration) was administered alone or at 20 min, 4 h, and 24 h before X-ray treatments. The significant effect observed only at 24 h time interval, depended on the X-ray dose and not on the gemcitabine dose. Secondly, 4 gemcitabine administrations every 3 days were used in fractionated combined schedules (overall treatment time of 10 days). We studied the relationship among different doses of gemcitabine, alone or combined with 10 daily X-ray treatments (2 Gy/fraction). We observed an interactive effect of gemcitabine up to its threshold dose of 60 mg/kg/fraction. Furthermore, 10 X-ray daily treatments and 4 X-ray treatments every 3 days (total doses 20-40 Gy) were performed with gemcitabine 60 mg/kg/fraction to study the effect of different doses and schedules of X-rays. Tumor growth delays increase with higher X-ray doses, and this occurs more with 4 X-ray treatments than with 10 X-ray treatments. Our results re-affirm the uselessness of high gemcitabine doses, and indicate the effectiveness of combined gemcitabine-radiation fractionated protocols.

[A new technic for determination of antibiotics in the renal parenchyma].

The determination of antibiotics in the renal tissue is of real value only if the blood and the residue urine are removed from the kidney. The Authors report a new technique dealing with the washing of the organ "in situ" by means of an artery-vein perfusion succeeded by the sucking of the residue urine from the ureter. The experiments were carried on male albino rats with the following antibiotics: indanylcarbenicillin, tobramycin, fosfomycin and cefazolin.

[Synergism of dicloxacillin and broad-spectrum penicillins].

On the basis of the proved protective activity showed by isoxazolyl penicillins on other antibiotics, a comparative study about the action of dicloxacillin over four penicillins with a broad spectrum was carried on. Either the experiments "in vitro" (antibacterial activity, growth dynamics, determination of beta-lactamase inactivation) then those "in vivo" have proved a real protection. A comparative study on different associations was also performed.

[The immune response to cryotherapy of prostatic carcinoma].

The Authors look for the theoric process by which an immunological response can occur after cryosurgery of prostate carcinoma. The theories about the development of this hypothetic response are explained and thoroughly considered also in the light of personal results.

Serum lipase assay. A test of choice in acute pancreatitis.

We evaluated the clinical accuracy of an automated turbidimetric assay for serum lipase determination in order to screen for acute pancreatic damage. Seventy patients with pancreatic and thirty with nonpancreatic digestive diseases were studied. Fifty-two healthy subjects were also studied as controls. Serum lipase concentrations were abnormally high in all patients with acute pancreatitis and in 3 (10%) in the group of 30 patients with nonpancreatic acute abdomen. In the 35 patients with chronic pancreatitis studied during clinical remission, serum lipase levels were abnormally high in 8 (23%), and abnormally low in 3 (9%). In the 9 patients with pancreatic cancer, 4 (44%) had abnormally elevated serum lipase values and 1 (11%) abnormally low. The results indicate that serum lipase determination is useful in the emergency diagnosis of acute pancreatic damage because of its high sensitivity and specificity. In patients with chronic pancreatitis and in patients with pancreatic carcinoma serum lipase determination is of limited value.

[Possibility of evaluation of chest pain at the time of hospitalization].

A series of 140 patients admitted to an Internal Medicine or a Cardiology Department for an acute chest pain is examined in order to evaluate the possibility of reaching a quick diagnosis, particularly for coronaric heart diseases, according with history, physical examination, electrocardiogram. In most of cases it was possible an immediate, correct evaluation of the patients, but in some cases a right diagnosis was achieved only after a period of observation and different investigations.
