[Treatment of condylomata acuminata with systemically administered recombinant gamma interferon].

29 patients suffering from condylomata acuminata were systemically treated with human gamma-interferon obtained by means of gene technology. The daily dose, subcutaneous applied, amounted to 100 or 200 micrograms. 12 patients were completely cleared by surgical excision and additionally treated with gamma-interferon for 7 days. 3 of them developed recurrences. 17 patients were exclusively treated with gamma-interferon 100 or 200 micrograms daily; they underwent 6 courses of therapy, each lasting 7 days, with interruptions of 3-5 weeks of observation. As a result, 5 patients showed complete remission; 2 patients partially responded. The tolerance of the drug depended on the dose. We did not observe any toxic side effects. Our findings suggest that gamma-interferon subcutaneously given may be effective with genital warts.

[Gamma interferon in psoriatic arthritis].

Fifteen patients with confirmed psoriatic arthritis were treated with recombinant interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) between October 1985 and February 1986. In ten patients a marked relief of joint pain was achieved within 28 days. Daily doses of less than 200 micrograms IFN-gamma did not have any effect on the skin lesions. Tolerance of the drug, given subcutaneously, was dose-dependent, no side-effects occurred with dosages of less than 100 micrograms/d.

Butcher's wart virus (HPV 7) infections in non-butchers.

The analysis of a total of 654 benign and malignant lesions of the skin, genitalia, lungs and bronchi, intestine, kidneys, bladder, mammae, and of the head and neck region, resulted in the identification of human papilloma virus 7 (HPV 7) infections in 3 individuals. One of these was an ordinary "butcher's wart," whereas the other 2 patients have never been involved in meat-handling or farming. One of the latter revealed extensive verrucosis of hands, feet, axilla, neck, and face, persisting for about 27 years, with new lesions arising in the neck region. Particularly the new lesions showed filiform morphology. The second patient has, for a period of more than 2 years, been showing filiform papillomas in the face which recurred after surgical removal. These 2 patients appear to represent the first cases of HPV 7 infections in non-butchers or non-meathandlers.

Aleukemic leukemia cutis presenting as benign-appearing exanthema.

Aleukemic leukemia cutis is a rare condition characterized by the infiltration of the skin by leukemic cells before their appearance in the peripheral blood or bone marrow. We report here a 62-year-old seemingly healthy patient who presented with disseminated erythematous maculae. A skin biopsy showed leukemia cutis of monocytic type. No involvement of bone marrow or peripheral blood was found. The patient developed acute monocytic leukemia 7 months later. We present this case to illustrate how leukemia cutis can masquerade as a clinically benign-appearing cutaneous eruption without leukemic changes in blood or bone marrow. To confirm the diagnosis of aleukemic leukemia cutis, immunohistochemistry of the skin lesions as well as a complete staging procedure is necessary.

[Therapeutic results with tamoxifen in oligospermia. II. Hormonal analysis and semen parameters].

During a five months lasting treatment with tamoxifen (2 X 10 resp. 2 X 20 mg daily) a significant increase of testosterone, LH, FSH, estradiol, free testosterone and SHBG was found. The prolactin levels diminished. In semen analysis the values of pH and fructose decreased within the normal range. The sperm density increased significantly, but we could not ascertain whether a dosage of 2 X 20 mg/die will provide better therapeutic results. Furthermore the hormonal and seminal investigations described in this paper did not allow to predict those patients who would be good responders on tamoxifen therapy. Tamoxifen seems to be effective in normo-, but also in hypo- and hypergonadotropic patients.

[Tamoxifen treatment of oligospermia. Mechanism of action and metabolism].

210 males with idiopathic oligozoospermia or oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia were treated with tamoxifen (2 X 10 resp. 2 X 20 mg daily) over a period of five months. Investigations which were performed concomitantly revealed no significant changes in body weight, blood pressure, blood sedimentation rate, red and white blood count including the number of thrombocytes. In the multi-analysis of serum we found significant differences within the normal range concerning the following parameters: creatinine, albumin, cholesterol, phosphorus, sodium, calcium, alkaline phosphatase, LAP and gamma-GT. Most of those changes in serum values could be explained by an anabolic metabolism due to an increased testosterone level and by additional stress of the liver function. On 41 of those patients an ultrasonography of the testes was performed; in more than 50% the testicular volume increased during therapy with tamoxifen.
