Restorative procedures after root canal therapy.

One of the most common indications for veterinary dental restoration involves replacing tooth structure after a root canal procedure. Special considerations are necessary due to the interaction of the restorative material with materials used to obturate the root canal. The restoration must provide a hermetic seal of the pulp chamber, as well as restore function. Combining several different restorative materials provides the best overall performance. In certain instances, full crown coverage is required to restore functional length or cervical anatomy.

Crown amputation with intentional root retention for advanced feline resorptive lesions--a clinical study.

Whole tooth extraction is generally considered to be the treatment of choice for teeth with advanced feline external odontoclastic resorptive lesions. These teeth often have both a weakened, brittle crown and radicular ankylosis. These two factors cause frustration and sometimes complications during attempts at extraction. This study investigated the alternative of intentionally leaving part or all of non-pathologic tooth roots in situ to prevent iatrogenic trauma to the patient, loss of alveolar bone, and prolonged healing of surgical defects. Fifty one roots from 23 teeth were radiographed 5-36 months following elective root retention; continued resorption without surrounding bony reaction was seen in almost all cases. In one cat, the roots retained normal periodontal ligament one year later, and in another cat that developed severe stomatitis, the intentionally retained roots were extracted at the same time that the remaining molar teeth were extracted.

Tooth splinting for severely mobile mandibular incisor teeth in a dog.

Periodontal disease, in its advanced stages, causes tooth mobility. The tooth movement further damages the periodontium, accelerating the disease process leading to tooth loss. Dental splinting can provide coaptive stability to the teeth as an important component of a periodontal treatment plan. This report documents results four years following splinting of the mandibular incisor teeth in a 3 year old Miniature Schnauzer dog.

AIDS information from the National Library of Medicine.

As part of a U.S government effort to combat AIDS, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is expanding its information services in this area. In response to the Health Omnibus Program Extension Act of 1988, NLM has expanded its AIDS Bibliography, enhanced its DIRLINE file with AIDS-related organizations, and developed three new online MEDLARS (Medical Literature Retrieval and Analysis System) databases: AIDSLINE, AIDSTRIALS, and AIDSDRUGS. NLM's AIDS-related programs and services are discussed.
