Pelvic lipomatosis and florid cystitis glandularis are rare. We report a case in which these two conditions were associated.
As expected, dements, depressives and patients with a mixed psychopathology were differentiated from one another on the sedation threshold measure and on a number of psychological tests. In depressives responding to treatment significant changes in physiological and psychological measures, which had been reported in an earlier study could not be replicated except for an increase of psychomotor speed. In the present sample of patients there were significant correlations between various psychological measures and between them and the levels of the sedation threshold, suggesting that sedation thresholds and psychological tests measured related cerebral functions. Evidence obtained from the earlier investigations to the effect that cerebral age changes short of those occurring in dementia may facilitate the occurrence of depression in late life was only weakly confirmed by the replication study.

We present 12 cases of cystitis glandularis which fall into two distinct groups, one characterized by hematuria and the other by urinary tract infection. We can produce no clinical evidence that this disease is premalignant, but emphasize the necessity of histology to exclude malignancy since, macroscopically, the condition is indistinguishable from mitotic changes. We also describe the association of cystitis glandularis and pelvic lipomatosis.
The present study attempted to assess the relative salience of different parts of the human face through the manipulation of the features contained in the Photofit Kit. Subjects observed a face constructed from the kit before attempting to identify the same face in an array of alternatives. The alternatives differed from the target in only one feature and this was systematically varied within the array. Nose changes were least likely to be noticed, followed by mouth and eyes, with foreheads producing the lowest rate of error. This order of features held irrespective of the similarity of the distractors or whether judgements were made in the presence or in the absence of the target. The chin region produced different results depending upon the similarity of the distractors. The results are discussed in relation to earlier experiments in which Photofit and previous studies of cue saliency were used.
In a double-blind clinical trial the effects of the vasodilator drug cyclandelate (in a dose of 1200 mg daily) were studied in a group of patients with depressive illnesses or dementing conditions. The measures used before treatment and after six weeks' treatment were: clinical rating, psychometric tests (Paired Associate Learning Test, Digit Copying Test, Digit Substitution Test, and Serial Learning Test), cortical evoked potentials, the sedation threshold and the Gresham Questionnaire. In the depressive group there were no significant differences in the changes in scores at six weeks in three groups: those who received cyclandelate plus amitriptyline, those who received placebo plus amitriptyline, and those who received neither placebo nor cyclandelate. In the demented group there were significant changes in favour of the placebo on two measures (Digit Copying test, and one component of the auditory evoked response). The results do not support the previously reported views claiming, in a number of studies, a significant improvement in the performance of both demented and normal elderly subjects treated with cyclandelate. The significance of these findings is discussed.

The efficacy of inhaled beclomethasone dipropionate has been examined in 44 steroid-dependent asthmatics observed for 9 months to 2 years. A 3-month double-blind trial found that subjects treated with beclomethasone had a significant diminution in symptoms, were able to reduce their use of medication, and had improved maximum expiratory flow rates. Approximately one half were able to discontinue the use of oral prednisone within 9 months after starting beclomethasone, and a further one third reduced their dose by at least 50%. No characteristics could be defined to predict responsiveness to beclomethasone. The effectiveness of beclomethasone was sustained for as long as 2 years and was not associated with any abnormal urine, blood, or serum values or chest X-ray findings. Candidiasis of the palate appeared in approximately one third of the subjects and was usually transient. The chronic use of beclomethasone did not result in endocrine suppression.
Small dermal tumors were found on three African hares (Lepus capensis) in the Laikipia District, Kenya. Gross and histopathologic studies revealed similarities to the Shope's fibroma of wild rabbits in North America and fibromas of European hares. Histological examination of the African hare fibromas revealed intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies characteristic of poxviruses and poxvirus virions were demonstrated by electron microscopy of ultrathin sections. Attempts to propagate the virus in rabbit skin, embryonated chicken eggs and cell cultures were unsuccessful.
