Worksheets simplify use of Wisconsin Test Cassette.

The Wisconsin Test Cassette, long the standard for non-invasive evaluation of kilovoltage, isn't known for its simplicity or convenience during use. The author presents a computer-generated worksheet that simplifies kilovoltage accuracy checks and customizes cassettes according to calibration curve data.

Improved calibrations using personal computers.

There are a variety of commercial devices available for the non-invasive verification of x-ray unit calibration. This article describes the use of custom-developed IBM PC compatible software in conjunction with a commercial unit to produce clearer and more meaningful graphical representation of linearity, kilovoltage and timer accuracy. The authors also detail how a personal computer can aid service personnel in the resolution of calibration problems.

[Motility of human spermatozoa (author's transl)].

Microcinematography has permitted the analysis of human sperm motility and the definition of various parameters which can be used to characterize such movements. The locomotor apparatus of the sperm flagellum consists of an axoneme to which has been added the dense fibers and the fibrous sheath. A dysfunction of flagellar locomotion may be caused by mutations resulting in various structural defects of which the most common affect the dynein arms.

[Primary phlebitis of the arm].

Primary phlebitis or sprain phlebitis in the upper member are caused by a compressive mechanism in the thoraco-brachial passage. Thrombosis most often originates in the area of the cost-clavicular hinge, and spreads towards the extremity of the member. In this series, 19 cases were treated: 8 recent cases of phlebitis, in which results were all too often imperfect (5 failures), 11 post-phlebitic syndromes, in which there were 9 good results. The surgical procedure which we therefore recommend aims at the decompression of the collateral circulation flowing around the thrombosed area: this should be enough to improve results in a large proportion of cases.

[Experimental study of electro-ejaculation in the baboon (author's transl)].

With the aim of applying the technique of electro-ejaculation to paraplegics, the authors perfected an apparatus which permits stimulation with an intra-rectal electrode. Out of 27 electro-ejaculations carried out on 9 monkeys, there were 5 failures and 22 successes (but 3 of these only contained coagulum). The results improved at the same time as the technique. Although the motility and the number of spermatozoa were rather reduced in comparison with normal ejaculation, the semen obtained appeared to be utilizable. Observation of the animal, rectoscopy as well as the histological investigations carried out in 3 of the animals which were sacrificed showed no complication or lesion. The apparatus and technique which subsequently proved to be applicable in the paraplegic male should enable the improvement of his possibilities of procreation.

[Correlation between initial sperm quality and its ability to tolerate cryopreservation].

The aim of this study based on the investigation of 570 semen specimens providing from 251 patients is to determine the correlation existing between initial sperm quality and its ability to bear cryo-preservation. Semen quality was estimated according to the usual parameters : numeration, motility and morphology of spermatozoa. Motility recovery on the one hand, and fertilizing capacity after cryo-preservation on the other hand, allowed an estimation of the sperm ability to bear thawing. Motility recovery seems to depend widely on the initial sperm quality. The persistence of sperm fertilizing capacity partly depends on the motility recovery and consequently partly on the initial quality. However, some semen specimens seem to lose their fertilizing capacity in spite of a good motility after deep-freezing.

Radiology information systems: evaluation and selection issues.

This article describes attributes of effective computer systems for radiology department management, such as the ability to minimize errors and data entry time while maximizing flexibility, data access and productivity. It also discusses implementation issues managers should be aware of in evaluating computer systems, including hardware platforms, input screens, output options and interfaces with other computer systems.
