Two patients with presumably benzene-induced malignant blood disorders with preleukemic phases were cytogenetically monitored through the courses of their diseases. Patient 1, in addition to a familial chromosome translocation [t(3;16)], developed karyotypic abnormalities in 100% of the marrow cells, including two translocation: t(9;16)] and t(4;15). Monosomy of chromosome 7 characterized the cells of patient 2. Cytogenetic monitoring of the patients at various phases of their diseases served as an important indicator of the transformation or progression of the preleukemia into frank leukemia and of the unusual behavior of such leukemic cells.

In this paper we describe a previously unreported association of ulnar defect and lobster-claw deformity of the feet, occurring in four males belonging to two generations of the same family. Minor expression of the same ulnar reduction defect in female relatives suggests X-linked recessive inheritance, but an autosomal dominant with irregular expression cannot be excluded.

Semen parameters were analyzed in a series of 76 men pre- and postvasectomy. The mean volume decrease was 0.66 ml but it was 0.5 ml or more for only 53% of subjects. A decrease in the number of spermatozoa was correlated primarily with the number of ejaculations. In nearly all cases the total number of spermatozoa contained in all semen samples examined after vasectomy was clearly lower than the average number contained in only one ejaculation prior to vasectomy. Motile spermatozoa were never observed after the 15th day following vasectomy. The reappearance of motile spermatozoa after that time was an almost certain sign of a defect in the vas block or of recanalization of the vas deferens.
After having experimented with electro-stimulation on monkeys, the authors have put it into practice with the paraplegic. They report observations on pregnancy of a woman with a complete paraplegic below T4 who was injured 15 years ago. Nineteen electro-stimulations and seven artificial inseminations were necessary. The electro-stimulation is easy and can be repeated at will.
The two sterile brothers were found to have the same sperm abnormalities. The flagella were short or absent. The constituent elements of the flagellum were disorganized, and the axone structure was disturbed. These abnormalities give rise to a problem of explaining the genetic origin of certain sperm defects similar to those found particularly in mice.

--128 women underwent artificial insemination with husband's semen (A I H) after an over 3 years period of sterility. --The most frequently recorded indication was low sperm density and/or reduced sperm motility. To increase sperm concentration and motility split ejaculates were most often utilised but also different other methods. --The pregnancy rate was 31 p. 100 and the success rate per cycle was 5 p. 100.
Among 3 000 patients attending a subfertility clinic, the proportion of cases with a history of urethritis was found to be very high among heavy smokers. A similar increase was observed among those whose daily alcohol consumption was equivalent to more than a litre of wine. When standardised for age, both these differences remained highly significant. The alcohol effect remained clear when smoking was taken into account, but that due to tobacco was less apparent when alcohol was taken into consideration: in particular an increase was found to be strong among the heavier drinkers. Although the more frequent occurrence of urethritis could be explained by a difference in sexual behaviour, it is plausible that there may be a biological explanation in terms of an impairement to the subjects' immune responses.
Whereas Concanavalin A (Con A) and Wheat Germ Agglutinin (WGA) detect differences in the agglutinability of transformed, established and secondary cultures, Phytohemagglutinin (PHA) detects differences between cultured adult and fetal human fibroblasts. Adult cells agglutinate with PHA to the same extent as transformed cells, whereas fetal cells show significant agglutination only after trypsinization. Differences in cell size, growth rate, surface architecture or binding of fluorescent PHA could not be demonstrated between adult and fetal cells. Although the basis for this apparent difference in agglutinability remains unknown, it is the first demonstration that fetal cells (even after prolonged in vitro culture) retain at least some surface properties not shared by adult or transformed cells.

The present study was made on 480 men who consulted in our laboratory for a sperm exam. Semen were collected by masturbation. Only in very few cases (3 p. 100) ejaculation could not be obtained. In most cases ejaculation was obtained after a few minutes. Earlier or usual practice of masturbation does not seem to be of any influence on the result of semen collection or on the time necessary until ejaculation. 75 p. 100 of the patients attached much importance to the exterior aspect of the collection room. Actually, apprehension or eventual difficulties seem to be linked with a lack of sufficient information on the physician's part before semen collection. This study gives evidence that semen collection could be systematically made in the laboratory itself. It allows better sperm exam conditions.
