[Flunitrazepam, trazodone and sulpiride in the treatment of recovery reactions after ketamine anesthesia].

The authors studied the effects of flunitrazepam, trazodone and sulpiride on recovery reactions following ketamine anaesthesia, in male patients aged between 15 and 25 years, following minor orthopaedic surgery. Only flunitrazepam and trazodone proved to be effective, whilst sulpiride was quite useless in the prevention of recovery reactions. The authors nevertheless feel that trazodone is preferable to flunitrazepam since it reduces all recovery reactions and, in particular, because it reduces the agitation induced by ketamine, rendering the pseudo-hallucinations pleasant, and because it is free of the hypnotic component of flunitrazepam, often inconstant and sometimes responsible for the patient swallowing his tongue.

[Insulin-poietic effect of pentagastrin after beta-adrenergic block in the anesthesized dog].

Infusion of pentagastrin (5-G) into the femoral vein of anaesthesized dogs, in doses of 0.20 microgram/kg/min for 30 minutes, causes a prompt and significant increase in plasma IRI. The insulin-secretory effect of the peptide was not affected by 0.5 mg/kg i.v. of propranolol (a beta-adrenergic blocking agent) or by 1.3 mg/kg i.v. of practolol (a selective beta1-adrenergic blocking agent). These results show that the action of 5-G on the pancreatic beta-cells could be not related to the beta-adrenergic system.

[Oposite effects of audiogenic stress on the liver and adrenal dehydrogenase of the HMP shunt].

The effects of audiogenic stress (92 dB at 2000 Hz) on the liver and adrenal levels of glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6-PD) and 6-phosphogluconate-dehydrogenase (6-PGD) were studied in adult male rats. Blood glucose and liver glycogen were also measured. In liver of stressed rats the levels of glycogen, G6-PD and 6-PGD were lower in comparison with controls. On the contrary, a significant increase of the measured enzymatic activities was shown in the adrenals. The mechanism and biological meaning of such modifications are discussed.

[Comparative effects of pentagastrin and caerulein on the insulin secretion in the anesthesized dog].

The insulin-secretory effect of pentagastrin (5-G) and caerulein (CRL) was studied comparatively in the anesthesized dog. Both peptides, infused into the femoral vein for 30 minutes in doses of 0.20 microng/kg/min and 0.035 microng/kg/min respectively, caused a significant increase in plasma IRI without simultaneously modifying blood glucose. The insulin-secretory activity is however transitory for both, being a little more prolonged for CRL. On a molar basis the latter is almost 50 times more active than 5-G. The mechanism of the beta-cytotropic action of CRL and the different behaviour of the two peptides is discussed.
