Sulpiride induces an increase in plasma prolactin and a simultaneous increase of aldosterone release in man. In isolated and superfused bovine adrenal glands, prolactin does not increase aldosterone production even in high concentrations, whereas sulpiride induces a significant and long lasting increase in the production of this hormone and a concomitant increase in the tissue levels of cAMP. This suggests a direct effect on the biosynthesis of aldosterone.

Indomethacin inhibits prolactin liberating effects by MET-enkefalin-NH2, a synthetic analogue of MET-enkefalin, both in intact and in ovariectomized, estradiol benzoate treated rats. The introduction of PGE1 increases the intensity of this effect. It is therefore possible to suppose that the PGs are involved as intermediaries of the prolactin relasing effect induced by MET-ENH-NH2.
Angiotensin II increases aldosterone production of isolated and superfused bovine adrenal glands. Indomethacin shows a bi-phasic effect on the production of the above-mentioned hormone, inhibitory at low doses (0,2 microgram/ml), stimulatory at high doses (5.0 microgram/ml). Preincubation with this drug impedes the increase of aldosterone production induced by angiotensin II. It is likely that the steroidogenetic effect of angiotnesin II is carried out through the PGs.

Age-standardized incidence rates of Hodgkin's disease in the province of Torino in 1965-1971 were 2.81/100,000/year in males and 1.64 in females, i.e., somewhat lower than in urban areas of other industrialized countries. In the whole province, age-distribution for males was similar to previous findings elsewhere, with a young-adult peak at ages 25-34. However, in the city of Torino, males showed a first peak in the age-class 35-44, while in the rest of the province an infantile peak (0-14 years) was found. By dividing the latter area in suburbs and nonmetropolitan area, the infantile peak was confirmed only in the nonmetropolitan area. Females showed a different behavior: in the city of Torino there was a unimodal curve (peak in age-class 55-64), and in the rest of the province there was a bimodal curve with a first peak in age-class 15-24. These patterns have been analyzed in relation to the suggestion of a distribution by age of Hodgkin's disease following 3 types (nonindustrialized countries, urban areas of industrialized countries and rural areas of industrialized countries). No significant differences in the distribution of cases were found among the smallest geographical units considered (ULSs), in contrast with previous findings on cancer of the larynx and bladder, which showed marked geographical differences within the province of Torino.
In ovariectomized rats treated with estradiol benzoate, the pre-treatment with bromocriptine or metergoline on increase of PRL secretion induced by some prostaglandins has been investigated. The PGs used were able to hinder the drop in PRL levels induced by metergoline, a blocker of 5-HT receptors, but not that produced by bromocriptine, a dopamine receptor agonist. Therefore it is possible to suppose that the PGs are involved in the monoaminergic hypothalamic regulation of the PRL secretion.
In ovariectomized rats treated with estradiol benzoate the ICV introduction of PGE1, 11-deoxy-13,14-didehydro-16S-methyl-PGE2, PGI2 or 6 H-PGI1 produces a marked increase of the plasma prolactin levels. These results suggest that the PGs play a role in the regulation of the prolactin secretion.

The effect of prostaglandins on the increase of corticosterone output induced by caffeine was investigated in rats. PGE2 and some synthetic prostaglandins (11-deoxy-derivatives), which stimulate steroid output in vitro, enhanced the effect of caffeine. Pretreatment with indomethacin inhibited the effect of caffeine.

The behaviour of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in adult albino rats was studied during audiogenic stress (92 dB - 2000 Hz) for different experimental times (4-8-12-16-20-24-28 min). The results show the two-phase behaviour of PRA (plasma renin activity), which is related to aldosterone levels. These changes do not appear to depend on plasma electrolytes (sodium and potassium), while a possible role of ACTH is suggested.
