Familial pityriasis rotunda.

Pityriasis rotunda is a rare dermatosis characterized by circular, dusty scaling, dyschromic patches, quite asymptomatic and mostly described in Japanese and blacks. The authors have seen three cases of pityriasis rotunda in a Sardinian family that are to be added to two other similar reports. The patients were all in good health. An interesting feature was the association with favism. On inquiry it was discovered that many more members of the family were affected by either or both pathologies. The authors believe this condition to be a form of minor acquired ichthyosis of which Sardinia could be an ethnic center.

Incidence of polycystic ovaries in patients with late-onset or persistent acne: hormonal reports.

Forty-six women affected by late-onset or persistent acne were studied in order to investigate the frequency of hormonal abnormalities and polycystic ovaries. Hirsutism, perioral distribution of acne lesions and irregular menses were recorded. Hormonal measurements and ovarian echographies were performed. Twenty-four patients were affected with polycystic ovaries, detected by ultrasound scanning. Among the acne patients, the women with ovarian abnormalities had higher values of androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and luteinizing hormone (LH), and a higher LHT/follicle-stimulating hormone ratio than those with acne and without ovarian abnormalities. This study indicates the prevalence of polycystic ovaries in women with late-onset or persistent acne. Moreover, hormonal abnormalities indicate a subgroup of acne patients defined by the presence of ovarian disorders.

[Chronic urticaria and allergy to Acari. Experience with a specific desensitization therapy].

Eighty-five patients affected by chronic urticaria (45 females and 40 males) were submitted to intradermal tests with house and storage mites in order to evaluate a possible sensitization to these allergens. The same allergological tests were performed in an 80-subject control group. The results showed immediate cutaneous reactivity to one or more mites in 40 patients (47%) while only 6 positivities (7.5%) were found in the control group. 27 patients, out of the 40 allergic to mites, were submitted to specific desensitizing therapy. 6 of them showed a complete recovery, 20 good results and only 1 slight improvement of clinical manifestations. These data allow us to hypothesize that the allergy to mite allergens is an important etiopathogenic factor in several chronic so called "idiopathic" urticarias.

Comparative study of middle-latency responses and auditory brainstem responses in elderly subjects.

Auditory senescence is studied through an electrophysiological investigation of the brainstem, midbrain and thalamocortical tracts of auditory pathways. For this purpose, comparative electrophysiologic studies were carried out by recording middle-latency responses (MLR) and auditory brainstem responses (ABR) in elderly subjects in the 7th-8th and 9th decades of life and in a control group consisting of young subjects in the 3rd decade of life. All these subjects were free of otological, neurological, vascular and metabolic pathologic states. In elderly subjects, the statistical analysis of the results, especially of MLRs, showed a deterioration in the progression of information from the periphery to the center due to changes in morphology, increased latency, reduced amplitude and poorer reproducibility. Furthermore, a different behavior was noticed in females versus males. Indeed, the shorter latency of evoked potentials in the female control group was remarkably reduced in the elderly subjects. MLRs scan a wide tract of auditory pathways and give evident results even by adopting a juxtaliminal stimulation; therefore, they are a more complete and sensitive test than ABRs for the study of involutional processes.

[Skin pathology caused by drugs].

175 patients suffering from acute drug-induced skin pathologies were examined with particular reference to age of onset, clinical type and causative agent. The most common pathology was urticaria, followed by eczematous and exanthematic eruptions. The drugs most frequently responsible for such reactions were the analgesic-antipyretic-anti-inflammatory group, topical products and antibiotics. These data are discussed in detail.
