The absorption of antibiotics from the bladder.

The movement across the bladder epithelium of polymyxin B, bacitracin and neomycin is investigated in the human during postoperative irrigation. No appreciable amounts of these antibiotics enter the systemic circulation by this route.

Long-term effects of laparoscopic sterilization on menstruation.

The menstrual changes after laparoscopic sterilization were assessed in 200 women and compared with changes after conventional tubal ligation. About one third of the patients after laparoscopy had longer and heavier periods, but those women who were using oral contraception before operation fared worst. The reason for the menstrual changes may not be due to operation alone. There was no significant difference between laparoscopy and laparotomy in terms of increase in heavy bleeding or number of days of bleeding.

Steroids in the assessment of prenatal development.

Methods for identifying the fetus at risk and monitoring fetal well-being as pregnancy progresses are now an established part of prenatal care in the Western World. In this short review the use of steroids in the assessment of prenatal development is discussed. The metabolism of oestrogens, progestogens, corticosteroids and androgens during pregnancy is outlined and the relative merits, in terms of usefulness and practicability, of urinary and plasma steroid assays are discussed.

Automatic bladder irrigation after vaginal surgery.

Comparing Cystomatic irrigation of the bladder with conventional gravity drainage, there was no decrease in immediate urinary infection rates nor was there any obvious improvement in the speed of recovery of bladder function.
