Laser Doppler flowmetry in evaluation of cutaneous wound blood flow using various suturing techniques.

Measurements of blood flow on either sides of abdominal incisions and of uninjured control skin in 63 patients with three kinds of suturing techniques (clips in 21 patients, mattress in 21 patients, and subcuticular suture in 21 patients) on the 1st and 5th postoperative day were made, using an infrared laser Doppler flowmeter. There was a significantly higher flow on the 1st versus the 5th postoperative day. There is statistically higher blood flow in wounds sutured with subcuticular sutures in comparison with the two other groups. The method may allow the relationship of blood flow to wound healing to be evaluated.

Evaluation of blood flow in human rectal tumours using a laser Doppler flowmeter.

A TSI laser Doppler flowmeter was used via a rigid sigmoidoscope in 20 consecutive patients with rectal carcinoma. Blood flow and velocity was evaluated at the tumour centre, tumour edge and adjacent normal mucosa; blood flow in the centre of the tumour was significantly higher than in normal mucosa (P = 0.05) and the tumour edge (P = 0.037). Two patients with ulcerated lesions had much lower blood flow in the centre of the ulcerative lesion.

Common risk factors of breast and ovarian cancer: recent view.

Clinicians, epidemiologists, and public health specialists tend to examine breast and ovarian cancer separately. Although this seems fairly rational and expected, both malignancies are estrogen related and thus share many risk factors. In this review, we investigate the common familial, reproductive, anthropometric, nutritional, and lifestyle risk factors of breast and ovarian cancer. We believe that the parallel examination of the two cancer types could significantly contribute to an improved prevention of "gynecological cancer" as a whole.
