The fit of fixed partial dentures joined by infrared soldering.
This study determined the accuracy of fit of three-unit fixed partial dentures joined by an infrared soldering technique compared with one-piece fixed partial denture castings and individually cast crowns. Wax patterns of prepared Ivorine teeth, maxillary left central incisor and maxillary left canine, were injection molded; a plastic rod was used as a pontic. One group of patterns was cast as one-piece dentures; the other group was sectioned in the connector area, cast individually and then joined by infrared soldering. Castings were seated on their respective dies, embedded in epoxy resin, and sectioned. Gap distances between the casting and the die were measured at specified marginal sites with a profile projector. Results showed that the fit of infrared-soldered fixed partial dentures was significantly better than that of one-piece castings and was comparable with the fit of single crowns. The gap openings measured in all castings were within the range of clinical acceptability.
The evaluation of teaching in undergraduate psychiatric education: students' attitudes to psychiatry and the evaluation of clinical competency.
There is an increasing demand for improved skills by medical graduates in the psychosocial aspects of medical care. Psychiatrists as educators need to play an important role in the development and evaluation of education in many areas of the undergraduate curriculum in addition to the continuing education of graduates. In this review approaches to the evaluation of undergraduate psychiatric education are discussed with particular emphasis on students' attitudes to psychiatry. Key issues that remain to be addressed include the clarification of the most appropriate goals for undergraduate education in psychiatry, the most valid means of evaluating such educational programmes, particularly clinical competency and, finally, the many tasks in improving the status of the psychosocial aspects of medical care for students and their clinical teachers.
A research seminar programme for doctoral candidates in psychiatry.
A worldwide trend towards fewer clinician-researchers in the medical specialties has been identified. The ratio of clinicians to non-clinicians in academic departments is declining. Possible responses to these trends are briefly surveyed and an innovative research seminar programme for doctoral students in psychiatry is described.
