The Organelle Genome Megasequencing Program (OGMP) investigates mitochondrial genome diversity and evolution by systematically determining the complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences of a phylogenetically broad selection of protists. The mtDNAs of lower fungi and choanoflagellates are being analyzed by the Fungal Mitochondrial Genome Project (FMGP), a sister project to the OGMP. Some of the most interesting protists include the jakobid flagellates Reclinomonas americana, Malawimonas jakobiformis, and Jakoba libera, which share ultrastructural similarities with amitochondriate retortamonads, and harbor mitochondrial genes not seen before in mtDNAs of other organisms. In R. americana and J. libera, gene clusters are found that resemble, to an unprecedented degree, the contiguous ribosomal protein operons str, S10, spc, and alpha of eubacteria. In addition, their mtDNAs code for an RNase P RNA that displays all the elements of a bacterial minimum consensus structure. This structure has been instrumental in detecting the rnpB gene in additional protists. Gene repertoire and gene order comparisons as well as multiple-gene phylogenies support the view of a single endosymbiotic origin of mitochondria, whose closest extant relatives are Rickettsia-type alpha-Proteobacteria.
An investigation on 1000 cases of oral cholecystography allowed us to collect 640 non pathologic opacifications of the gallblader and among them only 3 cases of pathological common bile ducts (0,47 percent). Consequently when the gallbladder appears normal on the oral cholecystography, the fatty meal seems to be non compulsory but only when clinical findings are in favor of a pancreatic disease or if there are pancreatic calcifications or if surgery has been performed anteriorly on the bile ducts, the liver or the pancreas.
Two cases of prolonged fever are reported. In the first case a tuberculous abscess of the liver was considered after an ultrasonic examination of the periphery of an hepatic calcification discovered many years ago; a right hepatectomy confirmed the diagnosis. The second patient was treated twenty years ago for a tuberculous exsudative peritonitis. The pelvic examination showed a myoma. A computed body tomogram disclosed a picture of pyometritis. This was confirmed by laparotomy showing tuberculous salpingitis and pyometritis by praevia myoma.

Two cases of diffuse squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus simulating the roentgenographic appearance of oesophageal varices are presented. Careful fluoroscopic examination may permit accurate diagnosis; however if the lesions are equivocally demonstrated by X-ray examination, oesophagoscopy confirms the diagnosis of carcinoma. R94.
