Subacute cervical myelopathy in a child with cerebral palsy. Secondary to torsion dystonia?

A 12-year-old girl with a spastic dystonic tetraparesis due to cerebral palsy showed a subacute cervical myelopathy. X-ray films of the cervical spine demonstrated a subluxation of C4 on C5. Myelography and computerized tomography of the cervical spine performed under general anesthesia demonstrated only a minimal rotation of C3 with respect to C4 and a rather narrow cervical canal. In the reported case the most important factor in the spinal cord impairment was probably the anterior-slipping of the 4th cervical vertebra. The subluxation, secondary to torsion dystonia as demonstrated by its relief during general anesthesia, very likely caused a long-standing, although intermittent, spinal cord compression.

Intratumoral beta interferon and systemic chemotherapy. Preliminary data in GBM patients.

Doses and schedules for treatment of malignant glial tumors, using IFN are still uncertain and controversial. In this study preliminary results of treatment of 10 glioblastoma multiforme patients are shown. Six patients were treated with local injection of beta-IFN through an Ommaya reservoir: 4 with beta-IFN followed by systemic chemotherapy (CDDP-VP16); we found that IFN alone was ineffective. Results were improved when local immunotherapy was associated with systemic chemotherapy. New drugs and investigation of possible pharmacological synergism are needed.

Predictive accuracy of cell kinetics data in glial tumors investigated by serial stereotactic biopsy.

The prognostic accuracy of cell kinetics investigations in patients affected from glial tumors, submitted to serial stereotactic biopsy is reported. The methodology is described and the results obtained in 103 patients are discussed with particular regard to mature and anaplastic astrocytoma series. In conclusion the value of the procedure has been clearly demonstrated in glial tumors different form glioblastoma.

Injection-corrosion cast study of the microcirculation of the brain in haemorrhagic and ischaemic disorders. Preliminary investigation.

The results of studies with the injection-corrosion cast technique in cases of haemorrhagic and ischaemic complications of saccular cerebral aneurysm in man are presented. This technique in conjunction with SEM makes possible a detailed qualitative analysis of the microvascular network. The morphological features of the pathologic areas are analysed. The pathophysiological significance of the observed abnormalities of the cerebral microcirculation are discussed.
