[Recurrent meningitis. Description of a case in a girl with dermal sinus].

The authors describe a case of recurrent meningitis in a child with a dermal sinus. All the conditions causing this severe pathology are considered, particularly those in the pediatric age. The surgical treatment of the congenital malformation gave a complete resolution of the recurrent infections.

Anti-Bacterial Agents↗

[Arthritis caused by type B Haemophilus influenzae. Description of 2 cases].

Haemophilus Influenzae type B is perhaps the most important pathogen in childhood. H.I. is the most common cause of bacterial septic arthritis in children under 2 years of age in the U.S.A. We describe two cases of H.I. septic arthritis and we discuss the the treatment. The antibiotic therapy is invasive H.I. type B disease is in a period of transition. New drugs are available that offer the same therapeutic efficacy as Ampicillin and Chloramphenicol but with decreased toxicity.

Arthritis, Infectious↗

[Spondylocostal dysostosis].

A case with spondylocostal dysostosis is reported. The Authors emphasize the different prognosis of the autosomal recessive form in comparison with the autosomal dominant one. The association between pericentric inversion of chromosome 9 and this dysplasia is discussed.

Chromosome Inversion↗

[The mesenteric artery syndrome].

We describe a case of superior mesenteric artery syndrome in a 12 years old girl. The patient had anorexia, emesis and weight loss. Rx-abdomen without and with contrast medium showed duodenum obstruction. The syndrome was associated with application of body cast.

Anorexia↗

[Fat necrosis in the newborn].

Subcutaneous fat necrosis is an inflammatory disorder of adipose tissue that occurs in the newborn. Fat necrosis has been attributed to birth trauma, asphyxia, prolonged hypothermia. Usually involute spontaneously within weeks to months. Hypercalcemia and hyperlipemia have also been associated.

[Partial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 4 (the Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome) with reference to the neurological and electroencephalographic aspects].

We describe a case of Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (partial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 4). The syndrome is characterized by mental and growth retardation and characteristic facial dysmorphism. The fetus was karyotyped for severe intrauterine growth retardation diagnosed on routine ultrasound. High resolution chromosomal analysis of infant and parents showed "de novo" deletion. Very interesting in our case are ictal phenomena and neurological development.

Abnormalities, Multiple↗

[Tuberculous meningitis. A case with severe ocular complications].

Tuberculosis in the world is the mean cause of death from single infectious agent. It is reported increase not only in underdeveloped countries but in developed too. Tuberculosis meningitis is a very serious form of tuberculosis. Outcome in tuberculosis meningitis is associated with the stage of the disease at presentation. When the child at presentation is extremely ill with coma the completely recovery is seen only in about 20% of cases. In our case patient had severe ocular complications: optochiasmatic tuberculomas. It is difficult recognize the two forms of tuberculomas intra- and perichiasmatic even with RNM. The good response at intrathecal therapy with recovery of the visus proves the perichiamsatic localitation of tuberculomas.

Antitubercular Agents↗

[A case of reflex sympathetic dystrophy in childhood].

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy, a well-described clinical entity that is frequently encountered in adults, is uncommonly reported in children. We report a case of reflex sympathetic dystrophy in a little girl aging 8 years. The main symptom was the acute pain referred to the right lower extremity. We underline once more the difficult of diagnosis and the contribution of 3-phase bone scan.
