[Functional exploration of brown adipose tissue using beta3 agonists].

In view to utilize beta 3 adrenoceptor agonists for the investigation of body lipid metabolism, a study of the effects of BRL 37344 on the functional activity of the brown adipose tissue was performed in the Rat. It is known that this tissue is the principal site of heat production for nonshivering thermogenesis mainly due to the oxidation of fatty acids under the control of norepinephrine (NA) released from the sympathetic nervous system. In order to stimulate the activity of the tissue, rats were reared at 16 degrees C. When they were one month old, they were divided in two groups; one group received a surgical sympathectomy of the interscapular brown adipose tissue (TABI) (S group); the other group was sham-operated (T group). The resting metabolism was estimated by the continuous measurement of O2 consumption and CO2 release, at an ambient temperature of 25 degrees C. The animal capacity for nonshivering thermogenesis was determined by increased O2 consumption following i.p. administration of NA or BRL 37344. In the S group a large decrease in TABI NA content and a decrease in resting metabolism were observed. In both groups VO2 was increased by the two drugs; the increase was linearly related to the dose of BRL (between 2.5 to 10 micrograms/kg); but it was 3 times as high in the T group as in the S group. Moreover, the effect of BRL was 40 fold greater than the effect of NA. These results seem to indicate that, in cold reared rats, a part of nonshivering thermogenesis may be mediated by the beta 3 receptors of the brown fat. It may be concluded that the rats born in cold conditions are good models to study the role of beta 3 receptors in the energetic activity of this tissue very profuse in infant but not in adult man.

[Legal aspect: regulation].

We gather, under the expression of regulation, both Parliament Acts and general texts emanating from executive Authorities. The analysis must be made according to the source of noise. So we have successively examined noisy equipment, industrial, commercial and agricultural activities producing noise, noisy material, carriage, leisure activities, building and neighbourhood noises, and after all the protection of working people. We have also studied the organization of the fight against noise, since it depends on law. Finally, this regulation is already very rich, including both texts directly concerning the fight against noise and other texts belonging to wider regulations (protection of environment or protection of working people). On the whole it seems to be well adapted to its objective, the prevention, even if it may be completed. The main thing is a better application to matters concerning everyday life and striking opinion, such as neighbourhood and traffic noises. It will be surely evolutive, first by connection with related and wider regulations, and above all according to the progress of our scientific and technical knowledge. Thus it will be constantly adapted, if exactly applied, to the needs of prevention.

[Immunologic thrombopenic purpura in children: therapeutic trial with high dose of intravenous gamma globulins].

Fifteen children with immunological thrombocytopenic purpura were treated by first intention with high dose intravenous gammaglobulins (Venoglobulins and Sandoglobulins). Nine children recovered after the first injection with platelet counts greater than 50,000/mm3 after 2 days' treatment, so countering the risk of haemorrhage. One child required a second course of treatment and was then cured. Three children had temporary rises in their platelet counts and then relapsed; two children did not react at all to the treatment. The most interesting feature of this new therapeutic approach is the possibility of preventing serious haemorrhagic complications in cases of severe thrombocytopaenia (less than 10,000/mm3) by inducing a rapid rise in the platelet count.

[Pheochromocytoma in children disclosed by pseudomigrainous headache attacks].

The authors report the case of a 10 year old child presenting with a three year history of paroxysmal headaches resembling migraine, and with a positive family history of the condition. It was only after three years that the symptomatology changed to become very suggestive of pheochromocytoma. The case illustrates the difficulties of assessing headaches in childhood and the authors question whether catecholamines and their metabolites should be measured in addition to the classical investigations (retinoscopy, skull X-Ray, EEG, CAT) in children with recurrent, severe and unexplained headaches. The importance of taking the blood pressure during an attack, a simple procedure which may be performed by parents, is emphasised.
