Two hundred and seventy-six patients (276) over the age of one were operated for coarctation of the thoracic aorta from 1949 to 1972. Patch graft aortoplasty, rather than resection of the coarcted segment was the operation of choice in forty-six patients. No hospital or late deaths occurred in this group of patients. Associated defects were present in 20% of these cases. The first patch aortoplasty was performed in 1962. The follow-up study covers a period of 12 years. Haemodynamic study and aortography were performed to assess the long term results. There was no evidence of recoarctation in the follow-up period up to 14 years following surgery and the pressure difference across the repair varied between a minimum of 5 mmHg to 18 mmHg (Table 2). The technique of patch aortoplasty without resection as been extended to a large number of patients and seems to be a very important factor in avoiding a circular constricting anastomosis, preventing the growth of the anastomosis. Maintaining the whole wall of the aorta may also influence the further growth and prevent recurrence in infants and children. Very little surgical dissection is required and suture line tension is also avoided. The technique of patch aortoplasty should be recommended in infants, children and adults with difficult and hazardous dissection.
A case of isolate non-parasitic hepatic cyst is reported with the emphasis on its pathological rarity and the problem of its nosological and anatomopathological identification. The usual clinical and diagnostic progression of this pathology often prevents definitive conclusions being reached before surgery takes place, though it is implicitly indicated by the reports on the upper abdominal mass. The therapeutic possibilities are also described.

The authors report their experience in 10 cases of popliteal artery aneurysms. By the data of the literature the popliteal artery is the second place most affected by aneurysmatic injuries, immediately after the abdominal aorta. The authors think that the optimal treatment is the by-pass with the autologous vein graft versus all other types of prostheses.
The metabolism of sulphur-containing amino acids is impaired in patients with advanced liver disease, but very few data are available in less severe chronic liver disease. We measured fasting plasma levels of methionine, cystine and taurine in 10 healthy subjects and 50 patients with biopsy proven liver disease: chronic persistent/active hepatitis (30 cases), compensated cirrhosis (10 cases) and decompensated cirrhosis (10 cases). Hypermethioninemia (up to 10 times control values) was present only in decompensated cirrhosis. Cystine was markedly reduced in patients with compensated chronic liver disease, while in advanced cirrhosis its concentration was within the normal range. No differences in taurine plasma levels were observed between the various groups. This study suggests that a derangement in sulphur amino acid metabolism, possibly located at various steps along the trans-sulphuration pathway, is also present in mild forms of chronic liver disease.
Reference is made to a case of jejunal diverticulum that had perforated and degenerated in the course of time. Its manifestation had taken the form of several melaena episodes and the consequent diagnostic difficulties are described.
