The formation of phenylethane-1,2-diol 2-acetate in the metabolism of styrene oxide by rabbit liver microsomes in vitro.

1. Phenylethane-1,2-diol 2-acetate has been isolated from the incubation of styrene oxide or styrene diol with liver microsomes of phenobarbital-pretreated rabbits. 2. Observed ratios of phenylethane-1,2-diol to its 2-acetate in the incubation mixtures ranged between 19 : 1 and 5 : 1 with different microsomal preparations and different periods of incubation. 3. The formation of phenylethane-1,2-diol 2-acetate may be a source of errors in the radiometric determination of epoxide hydrase activity in microsomes.

Feedback effects on the performance and self-reinforcing behavior of elderly and young adult women.

A total of 64 college-aged and elderly women participated in an experimental study of the effects of noncontingent positive feedback on simple speeded performance, performance self-evaluations, and self-reinforcing behavior (i.e., the number of S&H Green Stamps taken following feedback). Younger women self-reinforced more and held higher self-evaluations of their performance than elderly women. The treatment produced increases in all three dependent measures, and greater increases in self-reinforcing behaviors and self-evaluations were demonstrated for the elderly than for the younger women. The results are discussed in terms of age-associated differences in the susceptibility to external feedback.

The mechanism of oxidation of allylic alcohols to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones by cytochrome P450.

The oxidation of cyclohex-2-en-1-ol, a simple model substrate for allylic alcohols, is catalyzed by several P450 isoenzymes and leads exclusively to cyclohex-2-en-1-one. No double bond epoxidation or C(4) hydroxylation have been observed. The large primary kinetic isotope effect measured using [2H]-1-cyclohex-2-en-1-ol is consistent with an at least partially rate limiting breaking of the C(1)-H bond. The mass spectrometric analysis of cyclohex-2-en-1-one obtained from [18O]cyclohex-2-en-1-ol has established that a gem-diol intermediate is involved, even if a dual hydrogen abstraction pathway may contribute to the reaction.

Atypical fibroxanthoma with osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells.

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AF) is generally considered as a low grade superficial variant of fibrohistiocytic neoplasm. In this report we present an unusual variant of this neoplasm arising from actinic damaged skin of an elderly individual. The case was characterized by numerous multinucleated osteoclast-like giant cells uniformly scattered through a pleomorfic cellular proliferation. The osteoclasts giant cell observed represent multinucleated histiocytes rather than true osteoclasts.

[Psychodynamic aspects of patients undergoing dialysis treatment regarding the prospect of renal transplantation].

The aim of the study was to identify what defence mechanisms are operative in hemodialysed subjects in regard to the prospect of renal transplantation. The study included twenty hemodialysed patients, ranging in age from 25 to 60, half of whom could not undergo renal transplantation. Ten healthy subjects were also included as a control group. From an analysis of the findings it is clear that different types of defence mechanisms operate in patients according to their hemodialysis status and that there is a more stereotyped use of these mechanisms in patients with no possibility of escape-except of death-seems to provoke rigid and stereotyped defence mechanisms in these patients.
