College girls exercising at home for 19 minutes daily using the 10BX Royal Canadian Air Force exercise plan, with the addition of rope skipping, improved their physical working capacity and maximal oxygen uptake by 7 and 9% after six weeks. No change occurred in a matched control group. Changes in endurance fitness with this type of training are of relatively small magnitude, and reproducible measurements are required for their demonstration. The small gains in aerobic power would seem to be of little practical significance for the subjects, and a major drawback of any home exercise program is the lack of motivation to continue.

Eighty-nine of the largest U.S. corporations have downsized and survived. So, clearly, there is life after downsizing. But what will be the quality of that life, and how can it be improved? A consultant who has guided many companies through the downsizing and postdownsizing process and an internal program manager who has survived the turmoil of downsizing at a major U.S. corporation provide some answers based on their experiences. Here are a number of general principles for companies to follow in downsizing and in coping with life afterward. In addition, we offer a case study of how National Semiconductor Corporation handled its well-publicized reduction in staff and how it established programs to help improve life after downsizing.

The multistep invasion process of metastasis is a well-conserved mechanism of normal symbiosis and pathogenic parasitosis. To illustrate this statement, we have compared cellular and molecular aspects of metastasis from colon cancer and enteric amebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Both types of pathogenic cell, cancer cells and amebic trophozoites, follow the same metastatic route for the liver and other organs. Both establish invasion microecosystems implicating similar kinds of host cells and molecules belonging to closely related families. We have recently found indications that molecules released by trophozoites immediately after adhesion to epithelial monolayers bind to elements of the epithelial intercellular junctions. This phenomenon may lead to the functional disturbance of these junctions. Down-modulation of cell-cell adhesion molecules promotes invasion of colon cancer and other cancer cells. It is our opinion that comparative studies of apparently unrelated systems may reveal cellular and molecular mechanisms of invasion and metastasis that are of general biological importance.
