Dental health education for mothers with young children is thought to be capable of achieving a high standard of dental health for these children. This study considers the dental health of a sample of 5-yr-old children whose mothers were given dental health education at an early stage in their child's life. The dental health education was given to one group during home visits and to a second through leaflets sent by post. Comparisons were made with a third group of children whose mothers had been randomly selected to form a control group. Sixty-nine percent of children whose mothers were given advice at home were caries free, compared to 58% of children in the control group. Scores for gingivitis were also significantly lower in the first group. No significant differences in disease levels were seen between children whose mothers had been sent leaflets through the post and those in the control group. In relation to the use of fluoride supplements, 25% of the children whose mothers had been given personal advice received fluoride supplements regularly throughout the period of the study. Children of these highly motivated mothers showed less caries (83% were caries free) and lower levels of gingivitis than children who had never received supplements.
Dental caries, debris (DI-S) and sugar intake were determined for 766 rural Black, urban Black, coloured, Indian and White children, using standardized techniques. In general sucrose intake, both quantity and frequency was low in rural Black children yet these children had relatively few caries-free individuals and higher than expected mean dmft scores. Comparison with earlier studies in the same localities has shown a worsening of dental caries in all groups except the White, in which the situation has improved. Sucrose consumption declined in rural Black, and White groups, remained steady in urban Black children and increased in coloured and Indian groups.
In the course of a recent experiment a group of 314 mothers with very young children were visited at home by a dental health educator on three occasions. Mothers were given advice about dental health for their children and were offered a free supply of fluoride drops. Results drawn from questionnaires completed at each home visit suggested that dental health education given in this way was able to influence maternal attitudes and behaviour. Virtually all mothers accepted the offer of fluoride drops for their children and after 14-16 months, 65% of the group were still using the supplements.

Fifty subjects with amelogenesis imperfecta were investigated clinically and with cephalometric radiography in order to determine the prevalence and nature of the anterior open-bite, which has been reported in association with these enamel defects. Anterior open-bite occurred in 24 percent of the subjects and was always associated with a severe discrepancy in the vertical relationship of the jaws. This vertical dysgnathia also occurred in a further 20 percent who did not have anterior open-bite. It is suggested that the frequent association of anterior open-bite and amelogenesis imperfecta is caused by a genetically determined anomaly of craniofacial development, rather than by local factors influencing alveolar growth.
The literature relating to the dissolution of the silicate cements is reviewed, including the methodology, intrinsic factors relating to composition and method of mixing, curing etc. and extrinsic factors, i.e. the medium, pH, ionic strength etc. to which the sample of cement is exposed. New experimental data is shown relating the dissolution rate to solution composition and ionic strength. It is seen that samples of silicate cement can take up phosphate from solution as well as releasing this species and a dissolution process based on a reversible equilibrium is advanced. Also considered are the effects of sample volume:area ratio and the effect of agitation.

Comforters have been associated with three areas of concern for the dental profession: rampant caries, malocclusion and gingival recession. The most serious of these, rampant caries, is associated with the practice of sweetening the comforter. Every effort should be made to eliminate this hazard to the dentition by means of dental health education for the community, especially of pregnant and nursing mothers. An open question remains on whether unsweetened dummy sucking should be promoted in order to intercept malocclusions likely to arise from digit sucking.

The adhesion of four polymeric sealant materials to enamel treated with a topical application of fluoride has been assessed by tensile bond strength tests. The ultraviolet light-activated resin, Nuva Seal, was found to bond adequately to stannous fluoride-treated teeth. The tensile bond strength of Espe 71730, Alpha Seal, and Epoxylite 9075 to enamel was reduced by treatment of the enamel with stannous fluoride. Treatment of the etched enamel with acidulated phosphate fluoride reduced the bond strength of all four fissure sealants.
