The purpose of this research was to determine attitudes among nurse managers and assistant nurse managers toward impaired colleagues in a descriptive correlational study method, using the Perceptions of Nursing Impairment Inventory. The study revealed no significant differences in attitudes between groups; assistant nurse managers demonstrated a more disciplinary orientation toward impairment within nursing. Both groups tended to have supportive attitudes toward impaired colleagues. Racial/ethnic origin had the most influence on nurse managers' attitudes toward chemically impaired colleagues. The Philippine/Oriental group demonstrated a stronger need to know when a colleague is impaired or receiving treatment, exhibited less belief in the treatability of impairment and displayed a stronger belief in impairment as a personality weakness.
The dissimilatory nitrite reductase gene (nir) from denitrifying bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri JM300 was isolated and sequenced. In agreement with recent sequence information from another strain of P. stutzeri (strain ZoBell), strain JM300 nir is the first gene in an operon and is followed immediately by a gene which codes for a tetraheme protein; 2.5 kb downstream from the nitrite reductase carboxyl terminus is the cytochrome c551 gene. P. stutzeri JM300 nir is 67% homologous to P. aeruginosa nir and 88% homologous to P. stutzeri ZoBell nir. Within the nitrite reductase promoter region is an fnr-like operator very similar to an operator upstream of a separate anaerobic pathway, that for arginine catabolism in P. aeruginosa. The denitrification genes in P. stutzeri thus may be under the same regulatory control as that found for other anaerobic pathways of pseudomonads. We have generated gene probes from restriction fragments within the nitrite reductase operon to evaluate their usefulness in ecology studies of denitrification. Probes generated from the carboxyl terminus region hybridized to denitrifying bacteria from five separate genera and did not cross-hybridize to any nondenitrifying bacteria among six genera tested. The denitrifier probes were successful in detecting denitrifying bacteria from samples such as a bioreactor consortium, aquifer microcosms, and denitrifying toluene-degrading enrichments. The probes also were used to reveal restriction fragment length polymorphism patterns indicating the diversity of denitrifiers present in these mixed communities.
BACKGROUND: The life span of human aortic valve allografts is finite, and many fail because of cusp rupture or calcification. Subcellular changes occurring in aortic valves in response to transplantation include the uptake of calcium. This study uses a heterotropic rat aortic valve transplant model to determine whether the calcium channel blockers diltiazem and verapamil might attenuate leaflet calcification. METHODS AND RESULTS: The 60 rats studied were divided into the following groups: 1) control: valves from normal, unoperated F1 generation of Lewis and Brown Norway cross (LBNF1) rats; 2) control: valves from syngeneic transplant combinations (Lewis/Lewis); 3) control: valves from allogeneic transplant combinations (LBNF1/Lewis, donor/recipient); 4) experimental: valves from allogeneic strain combinations treated with 30 mg/kg per day diltiazem; 5) experimental: valves from allogeneic strain combinations treated with 30 mg/kg per day verapamil. Drugs or saline (controls) were administered with osmotic pumps placed subcutaneously 2 days before transplantation. Animals were killed 3 weeks later, and the valves were harvested and prepared for calcium analysis. Energy-dispersive x-ray microanalysis was used to measure the calcium in a section of one leaflet from each valve studied. Paired t tests showed that allograft valves treated with diltiazem or verapamil contained significantly less calcium than allograft controls treated with saline (p < 0.001). When all five groups were subjected to one-way ANOVA, the valves in the allograft control group contained significantly more calcium than all other groups. All other groups were not different from each other. CONCLUSIONS: The calcium channel blockers verapamil and diltiazem were effective in preventing early calcification that occurs in aortic valves after transplantation. Thus, these agents might play a role in prolonging the life of human aortic valve allografts.
1. Stereotypes of homosexual behavior may negatively affect the nursing care for homosexual patients. Nurses must closely examine their attitudes toward homosexuals. To be able to provide quality care to homosexual patients, nurses must feel comfortable and fully aware of their own attitudes toward sexuality and homosexuality. 2. Nurses stand in a unique position to foster acceptance of homosexuality by assuming the advocacy role and addressing the stereotypes regarding homosexuality for both individual clients and the community. 3. Nurses need to provide an atmosphere of acceptance for homosexual patients by creating an environment where sexuality can be discussed in nonthreatening ways.

Previous work by Browning et al. (Browning, K. S., Lax, S. R., Humphreys, J., Ravel, J. M., Jobling, S. A., and Gehrke, L. (1988) J. Biol. Chem. 263, 9630-9634) indicated that wheat germ extracts do not contain sufficient amounts of some of the protein synthesis initiation factors to obtain optimal translation of all mRNAs. In this investigation, a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine the amounts of eukaryotic initiation factors (eIF) 2, 3, 4A, 4F, and (iso)4F as well as the amounts of 40 S ribosomal subunits and elongation factors (EF) 1 alpha and 2 present in wheat germ extracts. EF-1 alpha is present in the highest amount (approximately 5% of the total protein), and eIF-4F is present in the lowest amount (approximately 0.03% of the total protein). The micromolar amounts of the factors and ribosomes are as follows: EF-1 alpha, 34; EF-2, 5.2; eIF-2, 1.5; eIF-3, 0.7; eIF-4A, 3.0, eIF-4F, 0.09; eIF-(iso)4F, 0.8; and 40 S ribosomal subunits, 3.2. The molar ratios of the factors to 40 S ribosomal subunits are approximately 11:1 for EF-1 alpha, 1.6:1 for EF-2, 0.45:1 for eIF-2, 0.2:1 for eIF-3, 0.9:1 for eIF-4A, 0.03:1 for eIF-4F, and 0.25:1 for eIF-(iso)4F. These findings strongly suggest that the concentrations of the initiation factors, particularly those factors required for the binding of mRNA to ribosomes, may play a major role in regulating the translation of mRNAs within the cell.

In weakly acidic solution, the broad-spectrum antibiotic imipenem undergoes complex oligomerization initiated by intermolecular carboxyl group attack on the beta-lactam group. In weakly alkaline solution, intermolecular reaction between the beta-lactam and formimidoyl groups occurs instead. Both beta-lactam and formimidoyl groups also hydrolyze at pH-dependent rates. Complex decomposition schemes were determined in kinetic studies at pH 4.0 and 9.0-9.5 using HPLC and mathematical models. The rates of the several initial reactions, calculated as functions of pH and imipenem concentration by fitting the models to kinetic data, fully account for imipenem decomposition rates throughout the neutral pH range.
