[Problems in training operatives in mental health service ].

The Author talks about psychiatric training and the difficulties it can provoke in students and teachers. He underlines the importance of the psychiatrist-patient relationship and the importance to hearing and listening without judging; he also points out that too often the attitude toward psychiatric patients is too "medicalistic". An institutional, structural and cultural change is needed to be able to really modify things.

[Clinico-nosographic considerations on the relation of depression and alcoholism in a population of 450 hospitalized alcoholics].

The presence of depressive symptomatology in alcoholics has frequently been encountered in clinical practice, but the relationship running between the two pathologies remains a subject for discussion. The methodological difficulty of this evaluation is seen in a major discordance of reported data. Against this background, a group of subjects hospitalized in a neuropsychiatric environment has been assessed for incidence of alcoholic and depressive pathologies and their possible correlations. Of 428 hospitalizations for alcoholism, 350 (82%) presented a depressive pathology. These patients were distinguished by DSM III into three groups [a) adaptation disturbance with depressed mood; b) dysthymic disturbance; c) atypical depression]. Within these groups, the incidence of prior stress-inducing psychosocial events was assessed according to the criterion of growing seriousness of DSM III. The results after statistical processing are discussed and compared with reported data.

[Contact dermatitis of the hands in housewives: preliminary data of a multicenter study].

The preliminary results of a survey carried out by the Institutes of Dermatology of Bari and Florence Universities and by the Clinica del Lavoro of Milan University are analyzed. The survey, whose aim is to identify the causes of contact dermatitis on housewives' hands and whose conclusions are forecasted for June 1990, will examine 1,650 female people, 1,050 of which are ill and 600 are case-controls. The results of the first 617 cases (514 ill and 103 case-controls) are reported. The anamnesis has shown that the hands (in 488 cases) are the most affected part of the body, that the most frequent symptoms are itch and burning sensation (in 410 cases), and that cosmetics, followed by detergents and softeners, are considered by the patients among the products more responsible for these symptoms. The allergic tests, even if with a different percentage of incidence, have shown metals (above all nickel), rubber additives and resins as the main aptens. Another survey, also in progress, concerning the search of metals in detergents and in washing waters for pollution caused by abrasives, pots, Inox sinks, pipes and tabs of the water system, is reported.

[Epidemiologic study of functional disorders in the elderly].

Numerous observations have evidenced the high prevalence of psychosomatic disturbances in the third age, so much so that this type of pathology is second in order of frequency in the elderly. In the light of these data a study has been carried out on functional disturbances in the third age related to certain psychological and sociobiological variables. The purpose of the research was to assess the effective influence of these "extrinsic" variables in the psychosomatic disturbance observed through the psychophysiological test carried out in the different groups examined. The results of the study are discussed and some keys for interpreting the data observed are put forward.

[Plasma levels of cyclic AMP and catecholamines in ischemic cerebrovascular disorders].

We evaluated in this study the relationships between the clinical course of patients affected with ischemic cerebrovascular diseases and plasma catecholamine and cAMP levels. We compared two groups of acute and chronic patients. These results show a different behaviour of plasma catecholamine and cAMP levels. This hematochemical parameter might assume a distance prognostic significance.
