[Large paraumbilical hernia and pregnancy. Case report].

A case of big parumbilical hernia in pregnancy is reported. The hernial sac was filled out by the corpus of the uterus. In the second half of pregnancy the abruption as well as the hernial operation is indicated only in case of need. At term the primary caesarian section with the supracervical amputation of the uterus and the operative correction of the hernia were performed.

Model of the bacterial flagellar motor: response to varying viscous load.

A model of bacterial flagellar drive by cytomembrane streaming is described and applied to experiments of bacterial propulsion under varying viscous load. The theory predicts a linear dependence of the reciprocal propulsion velocity on the viscosity of the suspension medium, if the velocity of cytomembrane streaming far from the basal body of the flagella is assumed independent of the external viscosity. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with experiments on free-swimming and on tethered bacteria. From comparison of the theory with experiments, the surface viscosity of the bacterial cytomembrane is evaluated for different bacterial species and turns out to be in the range observed experimentally on lipid monolayers.

Regulation of ion permeabilities of isolated rat liver cells by external calcium concentration and temperature.

Regulation of ion transport through the plasma membrane was studied on single cell suspensions of hepatocytes, obtained after perfusion of rat liver with collagenase/hyaluronidase solution. Steady-state intracellular K and Na contents were shown to be markedly dependent on external Ca concentration and temperature, the sum of both ion concentrations remaining nearly constant. In contrast, steady-state intracellular chloride content was found to be independent of external Ca concentration, but dependent on temperature. Using the constant field relations, the passive permeabilities PK and PCl for potassium and chloride, respectively, were derived from the experimental data. At temperatures at and above 37 degrees C, with increasing external Ca concentration, PK, exhibits a sharp decrease at about 10(-4)M. In contrast, PCl at 37 degrees C was found to be independent of Ca concentration within experimental error. Earth alkali ions other than Ca, show marked but different effects on PK if compared at equal concentrations. Preincubation of the cells with cholesterol leads to a broadening of the dependence of PK on external Ca concentration. The above results, as well as those on the dependence of PK on external Ca concentration obtained by other authors, could be quantitatively described by a theoretical model of the plasma membrane proposed earlier. This model postulates regulatory binding sites, which cooperatively undergo a cation exchange of divalent cations by K+ ions from the external medium if the cation composition of the latter is altered.

Investigations of nicandrenone--a withanolide-like aromatic plant steroid from Nicandra physaloides.

On the basis of IR, UV, ORD, NMR and high resoluted mass spectral data as well as chemical transformations, evidence for structure 1 of the D-homo-aromatic plant steroid nicandrenone from Nicandra physaloides (Solanaceae) was given. The sterochemistry of both epoxy lactol functions in this compound was established using intramolecular hydrogen bonding investigations. Biogenetical aspects are discussed.

Changes of cell surface configuration and regulation of cell proliferation.

The electric surface charge configuration of 3T3 and SV40-3T3 cells was characterized by determining the product of electrophoretic mobility of the cells times the viscosity of suspension medium. This quantity could be shown to change with temperature and/or treatment with calf serum or trypsin in close correlation with the effects of these agents on characteristics of cell proliferation. The present results, taken together with those of earlier studies on cell-electrophoresis and characterization of lipid constituents of the cells, support the hypothesis of a lateral phase separation in the plasmamembrane as triggering process in stimulation of proliferation of resting normal cells.
