Loss of zinc and selenium does not occur through peritoneal dialysis.

A prospective study was done to determine whether zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) loss occurs in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis through their dialysate effluent. Fifty pairs of aliquots of dialysis fluid were collected from 29 patients. Each paired set of specimens consisted of the dialysate fluid before instillation into the peritoneal cavity and a specimen of the spent effluent after dialysis for comparison. Zn and Se concentrations were measured using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry. The range of dialysate fluid Zn concentration before instillation was 0 to 1.75 microg/mL and that for Se was 0 to 0.33 microg/mL. Ranges for Zn and Se in the postdialysis effluent were 0 to 0.60 and 0 to 0.56 microg/mL, respectively. The concentration differences in 50 pairs of samples were analyzed with Wilcoxon's test. The difference in Zn levels between the predialysis specimen and the effluent was 0.009 +/- 0.036 microg/mL (P = 0.154). The difference for Se was 0.018 +/- 0.21 microg/mL (P = 0.118). In conclusion, no significant loss or gain of Zn or Se occurs in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

Alcohol withdrawal treatment in intoxicated vs non-intoxicated patients: a controlled open-label study with tiapride/carbamazepine, clomethiazole and diazepam.

AIMS AND METHODS: Alcohol withdrawal treatment efficacy of tiapride/carbamazepine (A) vs clomethiazole (B) vs diazepam (C) in non-intoxicated patients and vs tiapride/carbamazepine in intoxicated patients (D; breath alcohol concentration > or = 1 g/l) was tested (n = 127) in a controlled randomized open-label study. RESULTS: Efficacy and safety were not different between groups (total group: delirium, 3.9%; seizure, 0.8%), except for a lack of efficacy in 18% of intoxicated tiapride/carbamazepine patients. A change of medication in this group was necessary only when primarily intoxicated patients had reached the non-intoxicated range. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with tiapride/carbamazepine in alcohol-intoxicated patients proved to be safe.

Biochemical evaluation of sulfur and nitrogen assimilation potential of mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern. & Coss.) under application of slow-release sulfur fertilizer.

Pot experiments were conducted to study the efficacy of a slow sulfur-releasing fertilizer, sulfur glass fritz (SGF 1), on growth, photosynthesis, and sulfur, and nitrogen assimilation potentials of brown mustard (Brassicajuncea L. Czern. & Coss. cv. Pusa Jaikisan). Growth as indicated by biomass accumulation slowed down in response to the application of sulfur glass fritz. A similar trend was observed in the case of photosynthesis rate. The activity of two marker enzymes, ATP-sulfurylase and nitrate reductase, showed very low levels of activity, indicating poor assimilation of sulfur and nitrogen by the plant under sulfur glass fritz. It is therefore concluded that the release of sulfur by sulfur glass fritz is too slow and that the initial nonavailability of sulfur to the plants could lead to suboptimization of both sulfur- and nitrogen-assimilating enzymes. These factors may contribute to low rates of photosynthesis and poor growth.

Procedures for characterisation of the genetic material of candidate vaccine strains.

Two procedures for characterising the genomes of recombinant influenza viruses are described. The first of these involves ribonuclease T4 oligonucleotide fingerpart analysis of separated viral RNAs labelled either in vivo or in vitro and the second utilises polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to identify the double-stranded molecules formed by hybridisation between the complementary and virion RNAs of two viruses. Although the latter method is more suitable for routine screening purposes, both procedures are suitable for distinguishing between equivalent RNA components of closely related viruses.
