The Raman shift of a subpicosecond soliton in 100 m of fiber is controlled adaptively by pulse shaping before launching into the fiber. We use a deformable-mirror-based shaper to control the spectral phase of the input pulse.
Working with complex guiding structures such as holey fibers requires coupling light into the input face of the structure. We use a simple in vivo technique to determine the scale, morphology, and orientation of the input cleave of the fiber without resorting to separate and more complex methods like optical imaging or scanning electron microscopy. Further, after obtaining the transverse scan of the fiber tip one can precisely position the focal spot anywhere relative to the fiber structure.
We present a numerical technique for reversing femtosecond pulse propagation in an optical fiber, such that given any output pulse it is possible to obtain the input pulse shape by numerically undoing all dispersion and nonlinear effects. The technique is tested against experimental results, and it is shown that it can be used for fiber output pulse optimization in both the anomalous and normal dispersion regimes.
