Decoupled Synthesis Pathway via Precursor Functionalization Stabilizes High-Voltage Nickel-Based Cathodes.

Nickel-based layered cathodes are promising candidates for high-performance, high-energy lithium-ion batteries, yet their high-voltage application is jointly limited by synthesis-inherited structural defects and an unstable lattice oxygen framework. Here, we show that both limitations can be overcome by decoupled synthesis pathway (DSP) via La/Nb oxalate functionalization of the Ni0.6Co0.1Mn0.3(OH)2 precursor. Unlike the conventional coupled synthesis pathway (CSP) where precursor dehydration and Li2CO3 decomposition overlap in temperature, the DSP introduces a low‑temperature decomposition of La/Nb oxalates at 200°C, which effectively avoids localized contact between the precursor and Li2CO3 and shifts Li2CO3-related reactions to high temperatures. This allows sequential precursor dehydroxylation, rock‑salt (RS) intermediate formation, and layered‑phase transformation over a broad temperature window. The resulting LiNi0.6Co0.1Mn0.3O2 cathode with La/Nb functionalization (NCM-LN) features a uniform surface LaNiO3 perovskite heterostructure and a Nb‑doped layered bulk with suppressed RS and spinel defects. Consequently, under 4.5 V operation (vs. Li+/Li), NCM-LN exhibits homogeneous Li+ (de)intercalation, and a stabilized oxygen framework. In graphite||NCM-LN full cells, NCM-LN retains 80.1% of its capacity after 2000 cycles at 1C, substantially outperforming the pristine cathode. This decoupling strategy is broadly effective across various Ni‑based systems, providing a generalizable route toward high‑energy, long‑life cathode materials.

Multi-omics dynamic profiling reveals predictive biomarkers for first-line immunochemotherapy in extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) is associated with a poor prognosis. Although first-line immunochemotherapy improves clinical outcomes, robust prognostic biomarkers for this treatment modality remain unavailable. The aim of this study was to identify non-invasive, easily accessible, and dynamically monitored biomarkers of ES-SCLC by machine learning integrating serum metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics at multiple time points. METHODS: A total of 816 serum samples were collected from ES-SCLC patients receiving first-line immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy or first-line chemotherapy for metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics analysis. The immunochemotherapy cohort was randomly divided into training and validation subsets at a 6:4 ratio. Biomarkers were identified using machine learning algorithms, and their prognostic significance was evaluated through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, and multivariate Cox regression. Potential metabolic pathways and mechanisms were further explored via integrated multi-omic analysis. RESULTS: The immunochemotherapy exhibited a prolonged median progression-free survival (PFS) and higher objective response rate (ORR) compared to the chemotherapy group. A total of 5 serum metabolites (uric acid, L-aspartate-semialdehyde, dimethisterone, xanthine, L-cysteine), 6 lipids (Cer d18:1/26:0, Cer d18:2/25:0, SM d18:1/20:1, SM d17:1/25:1, DG O-18:1_16:0, PS 18:0_24:0), and 3 proteins (ACIN1, ACSL4, PHGDH) were identified and constructed into independent prognostic models. Among patients receiving immunochemotherapy, those categorized as low-risk based on the model demonstrated significantly longer PFS compared with those in the high-risk group. These prognostic signatures also retained predictive value in patients who underwent second-line treatment with anlotinib plus immunochemotherapy. Integrated analysis revealed that glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism was the commonly enriched pathway across all three omics layers. Notably, PHGDH (protein), L-aspartate-semialdehyde and L-cysteine (metabolites), and PS (18:0_24:0) (lipid), key elements in this pathway, were all incorporated in the predictive model. In addition, models of the composition of these substances after one cycle of treatment can still predict the prognosis of patients. CONCLUSION: In this study, we constructed and validated a set of non-invasive, dynamically monitorable prognostic models (containing 5 metabolites, 6 lipids, and 3 proteins) using machine learning by integrating multiple time point data from the serum metabolome, lipid panel, and proteome to accurately distinguish the prognostic risk of patients with ES-SCLC receiving immunochemotherapy. PFS was significantly prolonged in patients in the low-risk group, and this model remains predictive in the subsequent second-line treatment with anlotinib in combination with immunochemotherapy. Glycine-serine-threonine metabolic pathway may be the key mechanism, of which PHGDH, L-aspartate semialdehyde, L-cysteine and PS (18:0_24:0) are the core predictors. This study provides the first multi-omics dynamic prognostic tool for ES-SCLC immunochemotherapy and reveals potential therapeutic targets.

Rod and cone input to horizontal cells in the rabbit retina.

In the rabbit retina, there are two types of horizontal cell (HC). The A-type HC is axonless and extensively coupled. The B-type HC is axon bearing; the somatic dendrites are radially symmetric and form a second coupled network, while the axon branches expansively to form a complex terminal structure. The B-type axon terminals (ATs) are independently coupled to form a third network in the outer plexiform layer. We have modified our dye-injection methods to obtain detailed fills of the three different horizontal cell networks for analysis via confocal microscopy. We have confirmed that A-type HCs and the somatic dendrites of B-type HCs receive input exclusively from cones, whereas the B-type ATs receive input only from rods. A single B-type AT may receive input from as many as 1,000 rods, but, surprisingly, our data reveal only one end terminal per rod spherule. The somatic dendrites of A- and B-type HCs form clusters at each cone pedicle coincident with GluR2/3 and GluR4 glutamate receptor subunits. The B-type ATs have GluR2/3- or GluR4-labeled glutamate receptors in two locations: small puncta on the end terminals within the rod spherule invagination and large clusters on the terminal stalks, approximately 1.5 microm from the rod synaptic ribbon. We conclude that AMPA receptors of the same or similar composition mediate photoreceptor input to all types of HCs.

Hydrogencyanamide-bridged one-dimensional polymers built on Mn(III)-Schiff base fragments: synthesis, structure, and magnetism.

The ability of NCNH(-) to construct transition metal coordination polymers and to transmit magnetic coupling was investigated. By introduction of various tetradentate Schiff base ligands (L) and different solvents (S), nine NCNH(-)-bridged manganese(III) coordination complexes were obtained. Their structures can be divided into three types: I) NCNH-bridged chains built on mononuclear [Mn(III)(L)] units, [Mn(III)(L)(mu(1,3)-NCNH)](n) (L=5-Brsalen (1), 5-Clsalen (2)); II) NCNH-bridged chains built on dinuclear [Mn(III) (2)(L)(2)] units, complexes 3-8, [Mn(III) (2)(L)(2)(mu(1,3)-NCNH)]ClO(4)S (L=salen, 5-Fsalen, 5-Clsalen, 5-OCH(3)salen; S=CH(3)OH or C(2)H(5)OH); III) NCNH-bridged Mn(III) dimers linked by hydrogen bonds into a 1D polymer, {[Mn(III)(3-OCH(3)salen)(H(2)O)](2)(mu(1,3)-NCNH)}ClO(4) x 0.5 H(2)O (9, salen=N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane). In these complexes, the N[triple chemical bond]C--NH(-) resonance structure dominates the bonding mode of the NCNH(-) ligand adopting the mu(1,3)-bridging mode. Magnetic characterization shows that the asymmetric NCNH(-) bridge transmits antiferromagnetic interaction between Mn(III) ions and often favors the weak ferromagnetism caused by spin canting in these one-dimensional chains. However, these complexes exhibit different magnetic behaviors at low temperatures.

Coupling between A-type horizontal cells is mediated by connexin 50 gap junctions in the rabbit retina.

There are many examples of neuronal coupling via gap junctions in the retina. Of these, perhaps the best known is the extensive coupling between horizontal cells. In the rabbit retina, there are two types of horizontal cells, A-type and B-type, both of which are independently coupled. Connexin 50 (Cx50) cDNA, encoding a 440 aa protein, was successfully isolated from rabbit retina RNA. Cx50 was also obtained from isolated A-type horizontal cells (A-type HCs) by single-cell RT-PCR. A-type HCs were visualized by intracellular dye injection or with an antibody against calbindin. Confocal analysis revealed all Cx50 labeling occurred on the A-type HC matrix, typically at dendritic intersections. The Cx50 plaques varied in size, from punctate signals in which fine dendrites cofasciculated, to giant plaques, >50 microm(2), in which large dendrites crossed. The numerous Cx50 plaques between A-type HCs may adequately account for the remarkable coupling observed in this network. We could not detect Cx50 staining on the tips of horizontal cell dendrites within the cone pedicle invagination. This distribution does not support a role for Cx50 in hemichannel-mediated feedback. In addition, the absence of Cx50 in B-type HCs suggests the presence of a different connexin for this cell type. In summary, these results suggest that gap junctions in the A-type horizontal cell matrix are composed from Cx50. Multiple neuronal connexins are expressed in the mammalian retina and different cell types express specific connexins.

Rapid fabrication of large-area colloidal crystal monolayers by a vortical surface method.

We have developed a simple approach for rapidly fabricating large-scale colloidal crystal arrays on substrates. Latex particles were first assembled into a close-packed monolayer on a vortical water surface; the monolayer was then transferred onto substrates by a withdrawer. Such an assembly method is conceptually similar to the Langmuir-Blodgett (L-B) methods for film deposition but does not require an L-B trough. The samples exhibit a large-scale periodic feature based on optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy observations and diffract the laser beam, acting as crystals. This newly developed technique is timesaving, widely accessible, and applicable to large particles (up to 2 microm). It promises to be useful in nanofabrication.

Syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic characterization of five new dimeric manganese(III) tetradentate Schiff base complexes exhibiting single-molecule-magnet behavior.

Tetradentate Schiff base ligands H2L (H2saltmen, H2salen, H2-5-Brsalen, and H2-3,5-Brsalen), derived from the condensation of the corresponding salicylaldehyde or its derivatives with 1,1,2,2-tetramethylethyldiamine or 1, 2-diaminoethane, reacted with Mn(III) acetate or perchlorate salts and sodium azide or sodium cyanate to produce five Mn(III) dimer complexes, [Mn(saltmen)(O2CCH3)]2.2CH3CO2H (1), [Mn(saltmen)(N3)]2 (2), [Mn(salen)(NCO)]2 (3), [Mn(3,5-Brsalen)(3,5-Brsalicylaldehyde)]2 (4), and [Mn(5-Brsalen)(CH3OH)]2(ClO4)2 (5). These new complexes have been characterized by IR, elemental analyses, crystal structural analyses, and magnetic studies. Within these Mn(III) dimeric complexes, two Mn(III) ions are connected by phenolate oxygen atoms with acetate, azide, cyanate, a 3,5-Brsalicyladehyde anion, and a neutral methanol molecule as the axial ligands for complexes 1-5, respectively. Complexes 1-4 exhibit intradimer ferromagnetic exchange and display frequency dependence of ac magnetic susceptibility, possibly showing single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior. In contrast, complex 5 shows an intradimer antiferromagnetic coupling probably originating from the relatively shorter Mn-O distance, compared to those of complexes 1-4.

[Raman active vibrations of aluminosilicates].

Raman spectra of aluminosilicate minerals, namely kyanite, andalusite, and sillimanite and K2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glasses were recorded. Four alumino-silicon tetrahedral model clusters were calculated by self-consistent (SCF) molecular orbital ab-ini-tio calculation of the quantum chem (QC) method. The result shows a decrease tendency in Raman frequencies in the 800-1200 cm(-1) frequency region with increase in four-coordinated Al content, which is assigned to the Si--Onb symmetry stretching vibrations. The Raman spectra in the 700-800 cm(-1) frequency region is attributed to Al-Onb symmetry stretching vibrations.

Syntheses, crystal structures, and spectroscopic and magnetic properties of [Mn2III(H2L1)(Cl4Cat)4.2H2O] and [Mn2III(H2L2)(Cl4Cat)4.2CH3CN.2H2O]infinity: temperature-dependent valence tautomerism in solution.

The synthesis, X-ray data, and electronic structures of two manganese(III) 1D polymers ligated by tetrachlorocatechol, [Mn(2)(III)(H(2)L(1))(Cl(4)Cat)(4).2H(2)O](infinity) (1) and [Mn(2)(III)(H(2)L(2))(Cl(4)Cat)(4).2CH(3)CN.2H(2)O](infinity) (2), are reported. The electronic structures of the complexes have been determined by UV-vis-near-IR, IR, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Both 1 and 2 are air stable in the solid state and in solution, unlike most of the previously reported o-quinone-chelated transition-metal complexes. Electronic spectroscopy exhibits a strong near-IR band near 1900 nm for both, suggesting the presence of a mixed-valence semiquinone-catecholate oxidation state of the catechol ligands, Mn(2)(III)(Cl(4)Cat)(2)(Cl(4)SQ)(2), together with the pure catecholate forms. The presence of this isomer was further supported by EPR and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The complexes undergo intramolecular electron transfer (valence tautomerism) upon an increase of the temperature involving the equilibrium Mn(2)(III)(Cl(4)Cat)(2)(Cl(4)SQ)(2) <==> Mn(2)(II)(Cl(4)SQ)(4). This phenomenon is reversible and is studied in solution using UV-vis-near-IR spectroscopy.

Rational synthesis and magnetic properties of a family of low-dimensional heterometallic Cr-Mn complexes based on the versatile building block [Cr(2,2'-bipyridine)(CN)4]-.

Six heterometallic compounds based on the building block [Cr(bpy)(CN)4]- (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) with secondary and/or tertiary coligands as modulators, {Mn(H2O)2[Cr(bpy)(CN)4]2}n (1), {Mn(bpy)(H2O)[Cr(bpy)(CN)4]2 x H2O}n (2), [Mn(bpy)2][Cr(bpy)(CN)4]2 x 5H2O (3), {[Mn(dca)(bpy)(H2O)][Cr(bpy)(CN)4] x H2O}n (4) (dca = N(CN)2(-)), {Mn(N3)(CH3OH)[Cr(bpy)(CN)4] x 2H2O}n (5), and {Mn(bpy)(N3)(H2O)[Cr(bpy)(CN)4] x H2O}2 (6), have been prepared and characterized structurally and magnetically. X-ray crystallography reveals that the compounds 1, 2, 4, and 5 consist of one-dimensional (1D) chains with different structures: a 4,2-ribbon-like chain, a branched zigzag chain, a 2,2-CC zigzag chain, and a 3,3-ladder-like chain, respectively. It also reveals that compound 3 has a trinuclear [MnCr2] structure, and compound 6 has a tetranuclear [Mn2Cr2] square structure. Magnetic studies show antiferromagnetic interaction between Cr(III) and Mn(II) ions in all compounds. All of the chain compounds exhibit metamagnetic behaviors with different critical temperatures (Tc) and critical fields (Hc; at 1.8 K): 3.2 K and 3.0 kOe for 1; 2.3 K and 4.0 kOe for 2; 2.1 K and 1.0 kOe for 4; and 4.7 K and 5.0 kOe for 5, respectively. The noncentrosymmetric compound 2 is also a weak ferromagnet at low temperature because of spin canting. The magnetic analyses reveal Cr-Mn intermetallic magnetic exchange constants, J, of -4.7 to -9.4 cm(-1) (H = -JS(Cr) x S(Mn)). It is observed that the antiferromagnetic interaction through the Mn-N-C-Cr bridge increases as the Mn-N-C angle (theta) decreases to the range of 155-180 degrees, obeying an empirical relationship: J = -40 + 0.2theta. This result suggests that the best overlap between t(2g) (high-spin Mn(II)) and t(2g) (low-spin Cr(III)) occurs at an angle of approximately 155 degrees.

New treatment of neonatal pulmonary hemorrhage with hemocoagulase in addition to mechanical ventilation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a new treatment for neonatal pulmonary hemorrhage with hemocoagulase in addition to mechanical ventilation. METHODS: Forty-eight newborn infants with pulmonary hemorrhage were included and divided randomly into 2 groups. Among them, 28 patients were treated with hemocoagulase in addition to mechanical ventilation, and the other 20 neonates served as controls and were treated with mechanical ventilation only. RESULTS: Both the length of pulmonary hemorrhage and the duration of mechanical ventilation in the survivors were significantly shortened in the infants treated with hemocoagulase in addition to mechanical ventilation as compared to controls (p < 0.05). Moreover, all infants that were unable to remain in the neonatal intensive care unit died after discharge, and when their outcome was estimated as non-survivors, the mortality in the patients with this new treatment was 39.3% (11/28), which was significantly lower than in controls (75.0%, 15/20; p < 0.05). When the discharged infants were not included in the statistics, the mortality in the hemocoagulase group was 10.7% (3/28), which was also significantly lower than in controls (40.0%, 8/20; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The new treatment with hemocoagulase in addition to mechanical ventilation is effective in newborn infants with pulmonary hemorrhage.

Disability and health care spending among medicare beneficiaries.

This paper forecasts the impact of changing disability rates on spending by Medicare beneficiaries. We adjust for differential changes in spending by the disabled because the composition of the disabled population and the intensity of their treatment are changing. Among community-dwelling elderly, spending growth among the least disabled grew more quickly than among the most disabled, which offsets some of the cost savings associated with declining disability rates. Using estimates of spending trends by disability category, we project that the cost savings associated with improved disability rates will not dramatically slow Medicare spending in the long run.

Cooperation between ligninolytic enzymes produced by superior mixed flora.

Since the ability to degrade lignin with one kind of white-rot fungi or bacteria was very limited, superior mixed flora's ability to degrade lignin was investigated by an orthogonal experiment in this paper. The results showed that superior mixed flora reinforced the ability to degrade lignin, the degradation rates of both sample 9 and 10 were beyond 80% on the day 9. The cooperation between lignin peroxidase (LiP), Mn-dependent peroxidase (MnP) and laccase (Lac) for lignin degradation was also studied. By examining the activities of three enzymes produced by superior mixed flora, it was found that Lac was a key enzyme in the process of biological degradation of lignin but Lip was not; the enzyme activity ratios of Lac/MnP and Lac/LiP were significantly correlative with the degradation rate of lignin at the 0.01 level; and the ratio of MnP/LiP was an important factor affecting the degradation rate of lignin.

[Effects of acupuncture on the gastric motivity in patients with functional dyspepsia].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of the acupuncture on the gastric motivity in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD). METHODS: Ninety FD patients were randomly divided into 3 groups: the treated group, the control groups, 1 and 2, 30 patients in each group. Patients in the treated group received acupuncture treatment, those in the control group 1 and group 2 orally took Cisapride and Marzulene-s granule respectively. Changes in scores of symptoms, electrogastrographic figure, gastric emptying time estimated by B-ultrasonic examination and plasma level of motilin in the 3 groups before and after treatment were observed. RESULTS: Symptoms were obviously improved in the treated and control group 1 after treatment, which were better than those in the control group 2 (P < 0.01). Gastro-electric frequency and rhythm in the treated group and control group 1 were improved more significantly than those in before treatment (P < 0.01). Gastric emptying time and plasma motilin improved in the treated group and the control group 1 after treatment, when compared with before treatment, the difference was significant respectively (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture could significantly improve the gastric motivity of FD patients.
