[Ca, Mg, Cu and Zn contents of the maternal and umbilical cord serum in pregnancy-induced hypertension].

Calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc in the maternal and umbilical cord serum were measured in 106 patients suffering from pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and 106 controls. Mean maternal serum values of Ca, Mg, Cu and Zn in the PIH group were 2.460 mmol/L, 0.839 mmol/L, 35.094 mol/L and 8.408 mumol/L,respectively and were compared with the corresponding Values of 2.765 mmol/L, 0.834 mmol/L, 31.486 mumol/L, and 9.657 mumol/L in the controls. The Ca and Zn levels were lower and Cu higher in the PIH group (P less than 0.05 or P less than 0.01). No significant difference was found in the four elements in umbilical cord serum between the PIH cases and controls, indicating that the fetus can maintain an adequate Ca, Mg, Cu and Zn homeostasis even in pregnancy-induced hypertension. However, PIH cases had a lower Ca level in maternal serum than in umbilical cord serum. This study suggests that maternal serum Ca, Cu and Zn are related to PIH, and Ca might have a causal role in the development of PIH.

[Distribution and metabolism of calcium [3H]metronidazolamate in mice].

The blood radioactivity-time curve after iv calcium [3H]metronidazola-mate in mice was to be a diexponential model. It was rapidly distributed in various tissues. The highest radioactivities were found in liver and kidney, followed by lung, blood, heart, spleen, and the lowest in brain and testes. Bile and bone marrow contained only a slight radioactivity. In 7 d the cumulative excretion of radioactivity was 52 +/- 17% of the iv dose in urine and 10.3 +/- 2.4% in feces. The measurement by TLC and liquid scintillation counting of urine taken at 24 h after iv calcium [3H] metronidazolamate to mice revealed that approximately 77% of the total radioactivity in urine was excreted as the drug in unchanged form and 7% as its hydrolysate, metronidazole. Calcium [3H]metronidazolamate remained at a high level in blood on account of its longer T1/2 beta (34 h) and 20% were bound to plasma protein, thus making it available for longterm fractional radiotherapy of tumors.

Inhibition of 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl-induced fetal cleft palate and immunotoxicity in C57BL/6 mice by 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl.

3,3',4,4',5-Pentachlorobiphenyl (pentaCB) caused a dose-dependent induction of fetal cleft palate in offspring from pregnant C57BL/6 mice exposed to a single dose (783 or 1044 micrograms/kg) of this compound on gestation day 10. In contrast, 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexaCB did not cause cleft palate at a dose of 271 mg/kg and, in pregnant mice cotreated with 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexaCB (271 mg/kg) plus 783 or 1044 micrograms/kg 3,3',4,4',5-pentaCB, fetal cleft palate formation was significantly inhibited. 3,3',4,4',5-PentaCB (6 micrograms/kg) also inhibited the splenic plaque-forming cell (PFC) response and serum IgM levels in C57BL/6 mice treated with the T cell-independent antigen trinitrophenyl-lipopolysaccharide. At doses as high as 72 mg/kg, 2,2',4,4'-5,5'-hexaCB was not immunotoxic; however, in mice cotreated with a immunotoxic dose of 3,3',4,4',5-pentaCB plus different doses of 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexaCB (18, 36 and 72 mg/kg), there was a dose-dependent inhibition of 3,3',4,4',5-pentaCB-induced immunotoxicity. These non-additive (antagonistic) interactions of prototypical polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners may be an important consideration in development of a toxic equivalency factor approach for hazard and risk assessment of PCB mixtures.

L-asparaginase release from Escherichia coli cells with K2HPO4 and Triton X100.

A method to release L-asparaginase (EC 3.5.1.1) from ATCC Escherichia coli 11303 cells by chemical permeabilization was studied. It was found that a combination of K2HPO4 and Triton X100 was effective. The influences of K2HPO4 concentration, Triton concentration, E. coli cell concentration and pH on the release of enzyme and proteins were investigated in detail. Experimental results showed that 12.5% (w/v) K2HPO4, 2% (w/v) Triton X100 and 3 x 10(8) cells/mL made the amount of enzyme released over 70%. L-Asparaginase in K2HPO4 and Triton solution could remain stable at least for 24 h. The release effect of K2HPO4 and Triton X100 used simultaneously was better than that of K2HPO4 and Triton X100 used separately in succession. Electron microscopy indicated that the chemical treatment altered the surface structure of E. coli cells but did not break them. As the method does not produce a large amount of cell fragments and the amount of enzyme released is relatively high, it can be thought to be an valuable and economic method to release intracellular enzyme.

High resistance to cucumber mosaic virus conferred by satellite RNA and coat protein in transgenic commercial tobacco cultivar G-140.

A chimeric vector was constructed to express cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) satellite (Sat) RNA and coat protein (CP). Transgenic lines of tobacco cultivar G-140 expressing CP and Sat-RNA were obtained; these lines had high resistance to CMV. Fifty to 70% of the transgenic plants were symptomless 90 days after inoculation with 25-50 micrograms/ml of CMV. Resistance was about twice that conferred by the Sat-RNA or the CP gene alone in transformed plants.

Risk factors for febrile seizures in the People's Republic of China: a case control study.

A case control study was conducted to investigate the association of family history of febrile seizures (FS) and history of maternal, pregnancy and delivery, and postnatal factors with FS. Information was gathered by door-to-door survey in six major cities in the People's Republic of China. Factors present before the date of onset of FS were assessed in 182 subjects and in an equal number of controls matched for age, sex, and geographic area. The odds ratio for risk of FS in children with a family history of FS in a first-degree relative was 10.0 (confidence interval 2.7-58.6), confirming other observations that familial factors are an important predisposing characteristic for FS. Maternal acute respiratory infection during the first trimester of pregnancy was slightly more frequent in children with FS (odds ratio, 1.9 confidence interval 1.0-3.9). None of the other examined pregnancy or delivery factors was associated with an increased risk, suggesting that birth history is not an important factor predisposing to FS.

Analyses of notches in audioscan and DPOAEs in subjects with normal hearing.

In this study, the parameters of notches in the Audioscan have been compared with the distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) findings in 100 subjects with normal hearing, including 55 normal controls and 45 patients with King Kopetzky syndrome. Of those, 35 subjects had Audioscan notches (11 controls and 24 patients), 96 per cent (53 out of 55 notches) of which were associated with notches in DPOAEs. Analyses showed that the notch centre frequencies obtained in the Audioscan test correlated significantly with those of the notches found on the distortion product audiogram (DP-gram). In addition, the width of notches of the two procedures was also significantly correlated. It is likely, therefore, that such notches on Audioscan and DPOAE testing reflect localized areas of impaired cochlear function.

Is there an association between noise exposure and King Kopetzky Syndrome?

The condition in which individuals with normal pure tone audiograms complain of hearing difficulties, especially in the presence of background noise, (normal pure tone audiograms), has had a number of different names. The present term King-Kopetzky Syndrome was coined by Hinchcliffe in 1992. This is a common condition reported in 5 - 10% of those attending clinics complaining of hearing problems. A dominant genetic aetiology has been found in a proportion of cases. It may be associated with minor peripheral or central auditory dysfunction, and frequently the individuals exhibit anxious or depressive personalities. We found no relationship with noise exposure in a series of patients compared with matched controls. Here we review the evidence for and against such an influence and present fresh data in an attempt to define the role of noise, if any, in the causation of this condition. Our final conclusion is that there is no clear association between KKS and noise exposure
