To evaluate internal carotid artery occlusion noninvasively by means of computed tomography (CT), dynamic CT studies with intravenous bolus injection of contrast medium were performed in 13 patients with hemispheric cerebral infarction and one patient with vascular headache. The slice level of dynamic CT was fixed at the atlas. The initial CT scan was taken after the start of infection of 20 or 40 ml of 60% meglumine amidotrizoate (this scan was used as a precontrast density reference), and 10 additional scans were made during 51.6 sec from the start of injection. The occluded internal carotid arteries were not visualized in patients with ICA occlusion, while all nonoccluded internal carotid arteries proven by angiography were enhanced clearly. It is concluded that this simple and noninvasive diagnostic examination should be added to the routine test procedures for evaluation and follow-up study of extracranial cerebral vascular disease.
Spinach chloroplasts were immobilized with vinyl monomers by radiation-induced polymerization at low temperature and stored in buffer containing bovine serum albumin. The lifetime of O(2) evolution activity in photosystem II was prolonged remarkably in immobilized chloroplasts. Thermostability of immobilized chloroplasts stored in buffer containing bovine serum albumin was far better than that of immobilized chloroplasts in pure buffer and that of intact chloroplasts. When immobilized chloroplasts were stored in buffer including polyethylene glycol, the lifetime of O(2) evolution activity was longer than for those stored in buffer containing bovine serum albumin.
Typical Cockayne syndrome was seen in a boy and his younger sister and these two cases are reported here, and reported cases of the syndrome in Japan are summarized. Both cases (an 11-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl) had dwarfism, a senile face, retinitis pigmentosa, photosensitivity, and mental retardation. Calcium deposition in the basal ganglia was seen by CT scan. In both cases nerve conduction velocities were reduced suggesting peripheral neuropathy, but segmental demyelination on sural nerve biopsy was not demonstrated. Twenty seven cases of the syndrome has now been reported in Japan in 21 families (including the above two cases), consisting of 14 males and 12 females (the sex of one case was unknown): consanguineous marriage was confirmed in 14 families. Eleven cases in five families were siblings. The estimated ages of onset were from 1 month to 3 years, and in most cases photosensitivity was the initial symptom. Clinical manifestations were mental retardation in 25 cases (93%), dwarfism in 24 cases (89%), photosensitivity in 23 cases (85%), articular contracture in 22 cases (81%), sunken eyes in 20 cases (74%), retinitis pigmentosa in 17 cases (63%), deafness in 16 cases (59%), and intracranial calcification in 14 cases (51%). Intracranial calcification will be more often detected in future following the development of CT scanning.

A 59-year-old woman suffered from prolonged hypotension with myocardial infarction. Sixteen days after the episode, she showed bradykinesia, gait disturbance, and postural tremor. MRI revealed low signa intensities in the bilateral caudate nuclei and putamen on the T1-weighted image and high signal intensities on the T2-weighted image. PET with 18F-FDG revealed a severe decrease in glucose metabolism in bilateral basal ganglia. It is concluded that prolonged hypotension may induce localized delayed anoxic lesions in basal ganglia.
The diagnostic value of the empty delta sign on post-infusion CT films was investigated in five patients with superior sagittal sinus thrombosis subsequently verified angiographically and/or pathologically. The empty delta sign, which has been considered to be unique and reliable in the diagnosis of cerebral venous sinus occlusion, was observed only on CT films taken one to four weeks after onset, and was not seen in the extremes of the acute or the chronic stage of the illness. These observations may explain why this sign has not been apparent in some reports concerning the CT findings of superior sagittal sinus thrombosis. Recanalization within the thrombus may be the reason why this sign was no longer apparent in the chronic stage of the patients with superior sagittal sinus thrombosis.
The immobilization of erythrocyte as the whole cell without hemolysis was studied. It found that erythrocyte could be treated and immobilized stably by radiation polymerization of specific monomers having high viscous and long oxyethylene units chain such as methoxypolyethyleneglycol methacrylate (M-23G) and polyethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (14G). Irradiation dose without hemolysis was limited less than 1 X 10(5) r and a comonomer system consisting of M-23 G-14G, 1:1 and small quantity of glutaraldehyde (GA) was the optimum carrier composition. The functional properties of the immobilized erythrocyte was also investigated. It was found that the immobilized cell could be carried out carbon monoxide-oxygen gas exchange effectively and reversibly so as in the intact cell. The immobilized erythrocyte also showed the catalase activity just as in the intact cell. The stability of erythrocyte increased greatly by the immobilization for standing at low and room temperatures and hardly hemolyzed in non-isotonic medium such as pure water. It was observed in scanning electron microscope that the immobilized erythrocyte had a hollow disk shape same as in intact cell and covered with a thin polymer layer.
The cell fusion of Molt T-cells was investigated in the presence of water soluble polymer, polyethyleneglycol (PEG) and glass-forming monomers. In cell fusion with PEG only, inactivation of the cell occurred within 2 min. However, in the presence of PEG and water soluble polymer, most of the fused and unfused cells lived even after fusion times of more than 10 min. It was observed that water soluble polymer prevented the inactivation of cells during fusion as a protectant. As the result, ratio of fused cells increased in the presence of water soluble polymers. Some glass-forming monomers used as new fusogens such as M-23G (n = 23) and M-50G (n = 50) monomers having long oxyethylene chains in the methoxypolyethyleneglycol methacrylate, CH3O-(-CH2CH2-O)n-CO-C(CH3) = CH2 as well as PEG #2000 indicated large promoting and protecting effects on cell fusion.
