Latamoxef (LMOX) is a new antibiotic synthesized by Shionogi Research Laboratory. Chemically LMOX is especially unique with a sulfur atom replacing the oxygen atom in the 1 position of the conventional cephalosporin nucleus, and in addition, this antibiotic has a cephamycin-like structure. The antibacterial activity of LMOX shows high potency against Gram-negative bacteria, but tends to be weak against Gram-positive bacteria. The tissue levels of LMOX in humans after intravenous injection of 1 g were examined. The levels in uterine and adnexa uteri tissue at 1 hour after administration were 25.4 and 27.4 micrograms/g respectively. LMOX was administered to 147 cases in infections of obstetric and gynecological field. The clinical effect according to disease was 94.6% for intrauterine infections, 95.0% for adnexitis, 87.0% intrapelvic infections, and 100% for external genital organ infections, making a total of 92.5%. The rate of occurrence of side effects or abnormal laboratory findings was similar to or slightly less than that seen with other beta-lactam antibiotics.
We are using 5-FU, MMC, and FT-207 in combination for the treatment of the patients with gastric cancer for a long term, and the renal dysfunction was found in two cases. The 1st case was a 69 years old male, suffering from gastric cancer which was unresectable. He was treated with the anticancer drugs for 2.5 years after exploratory laparotomy and no development of gastric cancer was detected endoscopically. But renal function of the patient was damaged. The 2nd case was a 58 years old male, also suffering from gastric cancer. The chemotherapy lasting for 1.5 years after gastrectomy resulted also in renal dysfunction.

In the present study, the relationship between startle elicitation and lead-stimulus inhibition was examined. The amplitude of the human startle eyeblink reflex increased linearly with increases in the intensity of reflex-eliciting noise (S2). A lead-stimulus (S1), a pip tone of 70 dB, inhibited the reflex at both conditions with lead times of 100 ms (Experiment 1) and 250 ms (Experiment 2). The amplitude of the reflex was reduced by an equal amount regardless of the intensity of S2 in both experiments. The results show that the lead-stimulus inhibition is independent of the reflex elicitation.
This disorder, because of its protean manifestation, had long been controversial until Kudo advocated it as a distinctive disease apart from other apoplectiform diseases. However, exact relationship between juvenile and adult types of this disease has been rather poorly understood. As the results of this study, authors concluded that this disease consists of two parts; initial and successive. Initial part corresponds to juvenile disease process and successive to adult process. The former is the well known peculiar slowly progressive occlusive process which originates at the terminal portion of the bilateral internal carotid arteries. The latter is the disease process which develops in collateral arterial plexuses produced by initial process characterized by hemorrhagic and occlusive attacks. Both attacks, hemorrhagic and occlusive, have been believed characteristic to adult patients. But this study disclosed not a small number of patients present hemorrhagic attacks in adolescence and some of them early in juvenile age immediately after ceasing initial process. As the cause of hemorrhage, rupture of miliary aneurysms, which have been discovered in 50% of juvenile patients and 85% of adult patients by magnifying angiography (Fukuda and Yamada) was anticipated. Authors proposed a new concept: collateral arterial plexus syndrome to specify a disease process which occurs in collateral arterial plexuses and presents hemorrhagic and occlusive attacks.

We have found that charcoal hemoperfusion is effective in removing bromvalerylurea (BVU) from circulation. A patient poisoned with BVU showed a marked lightening of coma after 3 h of hemoperfusion. The BVU concentration in the patient's serum was decreased significantly by hemoperfusion. In an experiment with dogs without hemoperfusion, the BVU concentration had its peak at the fourth hour after oral administration and decreased in 24 h. In an experiment with hemoperfusion, BVU concentration in dogs decreased markedly during hemoperfusion. After hemoperfusion a rebound of concentration was observed.

A simple and practical method for the determination of very small amounts of nitrite in human, cow and market milks is described. It is based on the reaction of nitrate with 1-hydrazinophthalazine in acidic solution to form tetrazolophthalazine, a stable compound which can be extracted with an organic solvent and then determined by gas-liquid chromatography with electron-capture detection using a column of 3% OV-225 on Chromosorb W HP; the detection limit for nitrite was 2 ng/ml. The procedure for determining nitrite in milks involves extraction with solvent, followed by further clean-up by alumina column chromatography; the detection limit is about 4 ppb and recovery in human, cow and market milks was satisfactory. The method makes possible a micro-assay for nitrite. The tetrazolophthalazine was identified by its elemental composition, melting point and by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
A 31-year-old male who sustained completely penetrating impalement wounds of the head and chest by reinforced steel bars in a fall at a ferroconcrete building construction with a miraculous survival is reported. The bars were successfully removed; a surgical mallet was required to loosen the bar impacted in the patient's head. After 12 days he was discharged, and he has returned to construction work and is well 3 years postinjury.
