[Longitudinal studies into alterations of vaginal flora during pregnancy on the basis of modern perinatal medicine (author's transl)].

Assessment of the uterine cervix score is a valuable method for early diagnosis of imminent premature birth, particularly in the context of high-risk pregnancy. Cervical insufficiency was recorded from 14 per cent of a high-risk group of patients. Longitudinal studies covered 110 probands with high-risk pregnancy and repeated vaginal examinations and 45 pregnant women with no vaginal examinations. No significant difference was found to exist between the two groups regarding percentual occurrence of potentially pathogenic aerobic germs, up to the 38th week of pregnancy. Highly significant decline in germ incidence was longitudinally recordable from both groups during the period of amnioscopy. Exposure to potentially pathogenic germs was not aggravated by repeated vaginal checks during pregnancy. Additional conclusions are drawn for practice.

[Coincidence of lethal B-streptococcal disease of newborn with acute puerperal polyarthritis of mother due to infectious allergy (author's transl)].

Reported in this paper is a lethal B-streptococcal disease of a newborns which grew manifest as meningitis. It had been caused by Type Ic B-streptococci. The same pathogen was isolated from the mother's vaginal secretion. The mother fell sick with acute allergico-infectious polyarthritis, ten days after birth. This coincidence between infection of the newborn and the mother's puerperal disease is discussed.

Serotyping of Haemophilus influenzae a comparison of co-agglutination with countercurrent--immunoelectrophoresis and slide--agglutination.

30 out of 55 strains of H. influenzae could be assigned to one of the six serotypes A--F by slide agglutination, countercurrent-immunoelectrophoresis or co-agglutination. While slide-agglutination appeared less reliable due to non-specific agglutinations countercurrent-immunoelectrophoresis was of high specificity. No cross reactions were encountered in this test and results were unambiguously to evaluate. Co-agglutination is attractive because of its rapidity and simplicity without any need of special equipment. It was found to be of increased sensitivity in detecting type B capsular antigen when compared with countercurrent-immunoelectrophoresis, the problem of cross-reactions remains to be solved however. The use of co-agglutination for serotyping H. influenzae strains in combination with countercurrent-immunoelectrophoresis can be recommended.

Haemophilus influenzae type b capsular polysaccharide detection and measurement by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

A direct sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect Haemophilus influenzae type b capsular antigen. Using polystyrene as the solid phase and peroxidase-labelled rabbit antibody the assay detected the antigen in concentrations of 0.1 ng/ml. Linearity was achieved within the range of 1ng to 10 microgram/ml. Subtle measurements of Haemophilus influenzae type b capsular antigen in body fluids are possible through ELISA which is superior to counterimmunoelectrophoresis and latex-particle agglutination in this respect. ELISA should facilitate investigations concerning PRP pathogenic effects in experimental Hib infection as well as in human Hib disease.

Haemophilus influenzae biochemotyping.

Biochemotyping was performed in 129 strains of Haemophilus influenzae. 95% of strains could be assigned to one of the five biochemotypes proposed by Kilian. Most of the serotype B strains isolated in meningitis belonged to biochemotype I. The biochemical differentiation of Haemophilus influenzae is regarded as a reliable technique deserving further application.

[Comparative bacteriological examinations of bladder-puncture and middle-stream urine].

In 100 patients the bacteriological results of the urine got by suprapubic puncture of the urinary bladder were compared with the results of the mid-stream urine. In the vesicular urine the proportion of the urine samples infected as well as of the mixed flora is essentially lower so that, in contrast to the mid-stream urine, it gives more reliable findings. According to this the puncture of the urinary bladder should be used more frequently, particularly in certain groups of patients. A comparison of the bacteriological investigation of the vesicular urine with the semiquantitative investigation of the sediments of the mid-stream urine resulted in a large proportion of pathological sediments of the urine when the vesicular urine was sterile so that the reliability of this investigation appears restricted in its modern form of performance.

[Use of a new culture procedure in the diagnosis of vaginal mycoses--a contribution on the improvement of diagnosis].

On the basis of our good experiences with the application of the spoon culture procedure in the quantitative bacteriological urine diagnostics, we tested the applicability of the plastic spoon in the diagnostics of vaginal mycoses. Our investigations show that the spoon culture procedure means an optimization and rationalization in mycological diagnostics due to omission of several stages of work and of the risks of transport, and due to improvement of diagnostic reliability and acceleration of the transmission of findings.
